With social media, constant advertisement and huge expectations, plenty of films have underwhelmed in the last decade thanks to fans getting too enthusiastic about them. On the other hand, there’s been many movies that had extremely low expectations that somehow defied the odds.

These films may not have been very well known at the time, or perhaps flew under the radar. Some of them had been set up to fail before actually succeeding and some were just surprise hits that no one could have predicted. The movie industry is always ready to shock though, with plenty of films succeeding when everything had worked against them.

10 Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

Written by Mark Millar, Kingsman was already quite a successful comic series before it was to be adapted to the big screen. Thing is, it wasn’t the kind of story that necessarily appealed to the masses. In fact, it was really more of a cult favorite in the comic book circle before it was even optioned for a film adaptation.

Making things harder was the fact that it was R-rated, meaning it would immediately find difficulties in its advertisement since it’s not a well-known brand among mainstream audiences and marketing an R-rated film is always a challenge. Instead, this raunchy parody of the spy movie was so much fun that it became a massive hit, prompting sequels and even a prequel!

9 Game Night (2018)

Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are both fantastic leads so it should have been obvious that this film would be hilarious. But there’s been a number of comedy flops in recent years, with the films just not being funny enough.

Luckily, with an interesting premise and a number of laugh out loud moments, Game Night showcased that not only was it much better than it ever had the right to be, but was also capable of entertaining a lot of people.

8 Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011)

It’s always a risky business to reboot a franchise, especially when it already had so much love. With potentially disastrous visual effects and an odd premise, many expected the Apes series to completely fail. That, and this new revival was following the already lackluster remake from 2001.

The release of Rise of the Planet of the Apes showcased that not only was motion capture the new way to perform, but that there was a whole universe of stories to explore that created even better sequels. It was a brilliant surprise and audiences loved the reinvention of the series.

7 Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

When the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer dropped, the unintentionally horrifying design of Sonic created the kinds of headlines the filmmakers didn’t want. The poorly received and often mocked trailer made many feel like this was a disaster waiting to happen.

And yet, the release of the film showed that video game movies can actually be a lot of fun. Following the success of Detective Pikachu before it, Sonic may have finally broken the curse that has fallen over the industry’s terrible video game adaptations.

6 21 Jump Street (2012)

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are two well known leads now, but they were still establishing their careers as leading men when 21 Jump Street was first released.

The idea of two cops going back to school sounds like a recipe for a terrible D-list film. Not only that, but this movie was a modernized take on an otherwise forgotten cop show from the ’80s. Instead, 21 Jump Street turned out to be one of the funniest movies of the decade, catching everyone off guard with over the top antics and a number of genre defying moments that helped it transcend parody.

5 Blockers (2018)

Teen dramas rarely manage to appeal to an audience other than those that it stars. They are sometimes not that funny either, relying on gross and cringe humor while ignoring any semblance of a plot.

That being said, it was surprising when Blockers managed to use some of those elements of a teen comedy and make them work, all the while bringing in genuine heartfelt moments around a group of parents and young teen girls finding their way into adulthood.

4 The Lego Movie (2014)

It was easy to be cynical about the release of The Lego Movie. In many ways, the idea sounds like a lazy, unimaginative cash grab designed to play off of the famous toy brand instead of actually being a movie.

Instead, The Lego Movie was hilarious, groundbreaking in terms of its animation and even featured a surprise ending that defied expectations. Not only was the movie a lot smarter than anyone anticipated, but it was genuinely heartfelt as well. The film series is now one of the most popular in the world, demonstrating that heart and creativity can be put into any product.

3 Bumblebee (2018)

The robots in disguise have had a poor reception from audiences in recent years after each Transformers film brought back diminishing returns. The franchise was tired and the characters were not great adaptations of the source material. By the time Bumblebee was announced, the Transformers have been reduced to a cinematic punchline and punching bag.

And yet somehow, Bumblebee managed to change all the becoming the best film in the series since the original Transformers movie. Following the personal journey of a girl and her robot car, Bumblebee became a great sci-fi film that paid homage to its beloved predecessors, classics in the genre, and the ’80s in general.

2 Attack The Block (2011)

Joe Cornish is a well established director in the industry but back when Attack The Block was in development, it seemed like a small indie project designed solely for a British audience.

John Boyega was not the star he is now and actors like Nick Frost and Jodie Whittaker were at the start of their careers. The alien adventure turned out to be fantastic though and has been a cult hit ever since!

1 Shazam! (2019)

In terms of reception, the DC Cinematic Universe (DCEU) had been mixed at best in the lead up to Shazam!. The trailers suggested the film would be fun, but it could also fall into the trap of the past, self-serious releases that inspired fan division instead of unanimous adoration.

Luckily, Shazam! was even more exciting than audiences could have expected, appealing to a wide range of people and actually acting as a genre deconstruction and reconstruction in many ways.
