10 Movies Like Stand By Me You Have To See

Stand by Me is many things in movie history. It is proof than anyone who typecasts Stephen King as a pure horror author hasn’t read enough of his work, as this movie was a story adapted from his book, Different Seasons, the same book that gave the world Shawshank Redemption. It is also one of the best examples of a childhood coming-of-age story.

Released in 1986, Stand by Me starred some of the ’80s top child actors in Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell, four friends who decided one day to take a trip down the railroad tracks to find a dead body they heard about. What resulted was one of the ’80s best coming-of-age movies and one that stands above most that came later.

10 The Sandlot (1993)

Released seven years later, The Sandlot was another coming-of-age story that has stood the test of time. In this movie, the kids were teens and pre-teens who loved baseball and played it on the old sandlot. They were misfits and losers who were able to grow together to be better than they ever were apart.

It was a great inspirational story showing that kids who worked together could compete with the best if they just trusted each other.

9 Now and Then (1995)

Now and Then, released in 1995, is honestly the female version of Stand by Me. The movie has four women who remember back to the summer they spent together in 1970, using a framing device similar to that of Stand by Me.

The adults are superstars, with Rosie O’Donnell, Demi Moore, Melanie Griffith, and Rita Wilson gathering together and sharing memories of the summer (with Christina Ricci and Thora Birch as the two top names) where they discovered independence.

8 The Goonies (1985)

Released the year before Stand by Me, the Richard Donner movie The Goonies had a similar premise. It took a group of kids who were outsiders and sent them on an adventure where they discovered strength and perseverance in the face of danger. It even had one similar cast member in Corey Feldman.

In this case, the kids were following a pirate map and found an actual treasure ship, along with some robbers who tried to steal it out from under them.

7 The Lost Boys (1987)

While Stand by Me was a Stephen King story that was not horror, another movie was released around the same time that was pure horror and even featured some of the same actors in Stand by Me. While not based on a King story, Lost Boys owed a lot to the horror auteur.

Both Corey Feldman and Keifer Sutherland return from the Stand by Me cast to appear in Lost Boys, the first as a teenage vampire hunter and the second as the leader of a pack of vampires. The movie features Corey Haim as a new kid in town whose brother is seduced by a vampire and changed, and his fight to stay alive.

6 The Kings of Summer (2013)

In 2013, the film festival hit The Kings of Summer hit and ended up as the top coming-of-age movie of the year. A young man named Joe was tired of living under the rules of his dad and ran away into the woods with his best friend, Patrick.

The two end up joined by a strange kid named Biaggio, and the three decide they are going to build a house in the woods to live away from their parent’s rules. However, soon the pressure of living on their own weighs them down and turns them against each other.

5 The Outsiders (1983)

Based on the classic S.E. Hinton novel, The Outsiders is a period piece released in 1983 by director Francis Ford Coppola. The movie is set in the ’60s-era Tulsa and the teenagers who live in the town that hang out in two gangs, the wealthy Socs and the low-income teens known as the greasers.

The cast was terrific, with early roles for Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, and Diane Lane.

4 Dead Poets Society (1989)

Released in 1989, Dead Poets Society takes the age group up a few years, as this is a movie about older teens who go to an exclusive prep school. Most of the kids are disenchanted by their parent’s expectations and the rules and regulations of the school.

When a new English teacher played by Robin Williams, in a career-defining dramatic role, teaches them the joy of poetry, they start to come out of their shells. However, this is a tragedy, as this manner of teaching is never accepted by the school and the death of one of the kids brings it all down around them.

3 The Breakfast Club (1985)

When talking of coming-of-age movies that defined a generation, Stand by Me is an excellent choice, but The Breakfast Club is the movie that sits at the top of almost any list.

The movie had a spectacular cast, including Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Michael C. Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Emilio Estevez, as five teens held in detention after school. They represented each high school character type and carried the movie to an instant classic as they bonded and proved that they were not that different after all.

2 It (2017)

While Stand by Me was a Stephen King coming-of-age story, it wasn’t his only one, and it wasn’t even his best. There have been two adaptations of one of King’s seminal horror epics, It. The first was a cult classic with Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown.

However, a better version came three decades later with the 2017 film, focused solely on the kids’ journeys to stop the demon clown. The sequel focused on them as adults, but it lost something as the first version with the kids was a near-masterpiece.

1 Super 8 (2011)

In 2011, J.J. Abrams released a surprise movie with no promotion and no idea what it was about. This movie was Super 8 and was about a group of kids who wanted to shoot a student film with their Super 8 camera.

However, when they film a train crash that unleashes some kind of alien monster into the town, these kids have to run for their lives, filming the entire way. A young Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney star in the film.
