There are so many movies that are infinite wells for fan theories, whether it’s Donnie Darko or Inception, but there are some lesser-known mind-blowing theories for movies that may not feature the cerebral plot elements necessary to cultivate such concepts.

Every now and then, a tuned-in fan reads between the lines and conjures up a theory that adds new layers to a movie that it didn’t otherwise have. Between charismatic traveling salesmen who could be serial killers, an underrated ’90s action movie being a secret James Bond film, and the mafia genetically engineering cinema’s most iconic shark, some of the theories are out-there, though they still make an odd amount of sense.

Being one of the best road trip movies of all time, Planes, Trains, And Automobiles sees the odd couple Neal and Del forced to travel through the American midwest together to get home in time for Thanksgiving. One thing that causes much of Neal’s frustration is the huge suitcase that Del carries with him at all times.

It’s quickly established that he carries that huge case because he’s actually homeless, but there could be another reason for it. There’s one theory as to why he keeps that case so close, as it isn’t carrying his belongings, but his dead wife, who he mentions countless times throughout the movie. Given that there’s a ton of behind-the-scenes and cut content related to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, maybe the filmmakers explored this narrative avenue at one point.

9 Willy Wonka And His Father Are Supernatural Beings In Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

One theorist speculates that Willy Wonka and his father are supernatural beings in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The reasoning behind the theory comes from the fact that his father’s house is able to teleport, and the supernatural ability was activated by candy.

It makes sense, as the 2005 remake does feel a lot more fantastical than the original 1971 movie, as there are all sorts of teleportation devices and the great glass elevator is so much more unrealistic. Given that Tim Burton’s depiction of the classic Roald Dahl novel had a polarizing reception, this theory does make the movie much more interesting, and it could even be one of the things explored in the upcoming Willy Wonka origins story.

8 Jason Bourne Isn’t A Former Assassin

As the Bourne series follows the titular character who is a former assassin being hunted by the CIA, one theory explains that the character wasn’t actually a former assassin at all. Rather, Borne has schizophrenia, and the film acts as something of a spiritual successor to A Beautiful Mind. In fact, in this theory, Bourne is just a fisherman with a small inheritance—which makes sense given that he’s rescued by a fisherman boat at the beginning of The Bourne Identity.

Though the first three Bourne films don’t necessarily need a fan theory to make them great, it certainly improves Jason Bourne, one of the worst Paul Greengrass movies. However, it doesn’t explain The Bourne Legacy, which followed a completely different CIA agent to Bourne.

The Shrek franchise spends quite a bit of time exploring the backstories of its many characters, but one character whose origin isn’t clear is Donkey.

One theory posits that Donkey was actually a human being at one point but was one of the boys who was turned into a donkey at Pleasure Island in Pinocchio, as those donkeys could still talk. But, as there is currently a remake in development, it could possibly shed some light on this.

This theory is so simple that it’s a surprise that it’s taken so long to come to light. The opening to each Terminator movie is pretty procedural, as they all start out the same way: the T-800 looks for a disguise after coming out of the void stark naked, which is usually made up of a leather jacket and shades.

In Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, the T-800 takes a stripper’s outfit, which comes with red-tinted star-shaped glasses. But, it doesn’t end there, as there’s so much evidence that gives the theory so much credit.

4 Neo Is Actually A Dog In The Matrix

Of all the movies in the world, The Matrix is one of the most scrutinized of all time. Due to its deep philosophical subject matter, it’s easy to fall down a hole of Matrix-related theories for hours, including theories about the upcoming sequel. But, one theory, which posits that Neo is actually a dog, has fans watching the series from an entirely new perspective.

Strangely enough, it actually makes sense, as the Reddit user explains that in The Matrix, human brains can be entered by other beings. With that in mind, Neo gets up to a lot of dog-like behavior, such as becoming obsessed with Trinity, the first one to find him and give him a home, and, of course, he is obsessed with the looping cat.

3 Agent J Killed Everyone In Men In Black

One of the most famous parts of the whole Men In Black series is the neuralizer, a device that erases people’s recent memories when they look at it. Agent J takes the powers of the neutralizer almost for granted, as he’s always flashing passers by with it. When he uses it, J usually tells a cover-up story that generally comes with the intention of improving their lives.

However, this theory explains that J could be inadvertently killing people, as his stories are so open to interpretation. One example of this is when J tells a man to move out of his mom’s house, which leads to him yelling for his mom while picking up a shovel after J leaves.

2 The Mafia Engineered The Shark In Jaws

Though there’s so much about the movie that’s perfect, this almost outrageous theory makes it even more fascinating. In the novel version of Jaws, Mayor Vaughan had ties to the mafia, and it’s part of the reason why Amity needs to make money over the summer—so the mafia can be paid.

However, in the movie, the mafia is never mentioned, but the theory explores the idea that the mafia genetically engineered a more hyper-aggressive shark to create these attacks and help them maintain control of Amity after the economy is ruined.

1 Terminators Are Actually Peaceful

Though the first two Terminator movies are incredible, the same can’t be said for every movie thereafter, but this theory makes sitting through them a lot more enjoyable. The theory goes that the terminators are actually unwilling slaves, and this makes sense, as, when the T-800’s chip is reset in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, he becomes much more human. Plus, in Terminator: Dark Fate, the terminator chooses a more peaceful life when its link to Skynet is switched off.
