An Academy Award is the highest honor a filmmaker or actor can receive, and a Golden Raspberry is the exact opposite. The Razzies “celebrate” the worst films of each year, nominating movies for awards like Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Actor, among others.

It’s rare, but there are actually times when the same movie is nominated at both award ceremonies. Because there are so many different aspects that go into them, movies can easily be the best at one thing and the worst at another thing. But other times, both the Oscars and the Razzies can simply be completely off base.

Pearl Harbor (2001)

Pearl Harbor is one of many Michael Bay-directed movies that have been nominated for a Golden Raspberry. With the 2001 movie, Bay was attempting to recreate the success of Titanic by making an epic drama based on a real-life catastrophic event and focusing on romance.

That’s why Worst Screenplay was one of the six nominations Pearl Harbor had at the Razzies. But surprisingly enough, the war biopic also received four Academy Award nominations, the most notable of which were Best Original Song and Best Visual Effects.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

Jurassic Park is full of great action sequences, and it’s one of the most technically influential movies that has ever been made. But by comparison, the sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, is thought to be far inferior, and that’s mostly due to the underwhelming narrative of the T-Rex recking havoc in San Diego.

Because of this, it was nominated for Worst Screenplay and Worst Remake or Sequel at the Razzies. However, the movie did still retain the jaw-dropping practical and digital effects of the first movie, and that’s why it was nominated for the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (2009)

Some Redditors think Revenge of the Fallen is the best Transformers movie, but it’s generally regarded as the worst. But it was still able to get a Best Sound Mixing nod at the Academy Awards. It was also nominated for every Razzie under the sun, and it even won Worst Picture and Worst Director.

Thanks to there being so many films in the series, the Transformers franchise is intrinsically tied to the Razzie award ceremony. Every single Transformers movie (excluding the animated 1986 film) has been nominated for at least one Razzie. However, Bumblebee was nominated for the Redeemer Award, meaning that it was the movie that made the series bounce back from critical failure.

Armageddon (1998)

Michael Bay might not be the cinematic auteur that Martin Scorsese or Steven Spielberg is, but he does have some fun movies and there’s no denying that he has his own style. Not everyone sees that though, and Razzie voters despise him. Along with Pearl Harbor and the Transformers movies, the voters have a disdain for Armageddon too.

The film had so many nominations at the Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Actor, Worst Director, Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Original Song for “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.” Ironically, it was Best Original Song that the film was nominated for at the Oscars.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)

The Phantom Menace wasn’t exactly the epic prequel that was promised, and it certainly wasn’t the movie that fans wanted. But there were still some positive things to take away from the movie from when it was first released. Along with Best Sound and Best Sound Editing, the 1999 movie was nominated for Best Visual Effects, and at the time, there wasn’t much better visually than pod racing.

Unfortunately, the movie got a lot more recognition at the Razzies, and it was nominated for not one but seven awards, including Worst Picture and Worst Director. But it wasn’t just The Phantom Menace that got a ton of hate at the cynical award ceremony, as Attack of the Clones was nominated for the same categories too.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

How The Grinch Stole Christmas is now considered a classic holiday movie that families watch annually. When it comes to adaptations of children’s books that feature more pictures than words, director Jeffrey Price did a perfectly fine job of bringing the story to life and filling in the blanks.

But the Razzie academy didn’t agree, as they nominated the kids’ flick for Worst Screenplay and Worst Remake or Sequel. And the movie was also shockingly nominated for three Oscars, including Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction, and it won for Best Makeup.

Batman Forever (1995)

Surprisingly, Batman Forever was nominated for more than simply the technical aspects that the blockbuster movies typically get nominated for. The third film in the Batman anthology series was nominated for the Academy Award Best Cinematography, and in fairness, the film does have a unique aesthetic.

But while the Razzies didn’t shine a light on the underwhelming screenplay or directing, the track “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” by U2 was nominated for Worst Original Song. Funnily enough, the song was also nominated at the Golden Globes for Best Original Song.

Suicide Squad (2016)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is way ahead of the DC Extended Universe in almost every way, whether it’s the general reception of the movies or its box office success. However, the DCEU has something the MCU doesn’t, and that’s an Academy Award.

Though the movie was negatively received upon release, Suicide Squad was not only nominated for the Academy Award for Best Make-Up and Hairstyling, but it actually won. But it’s no surprise that the movie was ignored by the academy when it came to the narrative and performances. At the Razzies, the film was nominated for Worst Screenplay, and Jared Leto was nominated for Worst Actor for his polarizing performance as the Joker.

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1996)

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of the best Disney movies in terms of music, which is saying a lot, as the studio’s canon of films is full of classic musical numbers. The Academy recognized this too, as it was nominated for the award for Best Music, Original Musical, or Comedy Score.

If the award existed back in 1996, the movie would have probably been nominated for Best Animated Film too, but that wasn’t created until 2002. However, the voters of the Razzies didn’t feel the same way as general audiences, and they weren’t as bowled over by the musical numbers either. The movie was nominated for Worst Written Film Grossing Over $100 Million.

Joker (2019)

With both Suicide Squad and Batman Forever being nominated (along with Batman v Superman,) Razzie voters seem to have a seething hatred for DC movies. However, when it comes to Joker’s nomination, it was more tongue in cheek than anything. Joker was nominated for the Razzie for Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property, losing to Rambo: The Last Blood.

The nod makes a lot of sense, as Arthur Fleck is one of the most reckless movie characters of the past few years and he literally incites a riot. However, in reality, Joker was nominated for an astounding 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and Joaquin Phoenix even won Best Actor.
