Every now and then, a film comes out of nowhere and singlehandedly shoots the movie industry forwards by years. They stand above their peers by doing what few other creatives would have ever thought of in several lifetimes.

Reddit is full of users with their own opinions on films that were ahead of their time, whether it was because of advanced CGI or timeless storytelling. Between a terrifying sci-fi movie dubbed Jaws in Space, and the film that essentially wrote the rulebook for contemporary cinema 80 years ago, Redditors have their fingers on the pulse.

Alien (1979)

The 1979 movie Alien is one of the most heartstopping sci-fi horrors ever. And Migueli2021 explains that the movie was way ahead of its time because they didn’t believe the movie was made 40 years ago. They go on to say that the director “Ridley Scott did a surprisingly great job with such an iconic movie.”

Though it was hardly surprising, as Scott is one of the most visionary directors of this generation, especially when it comes to sci-fi, the Redditor is on the money when it comes to how iconic it is. Although at the very end when the alien is hanging out of the ship, it’s clearly a man in a costume, it’s the only few seconds when the 42-year-old movie isn’t completely believable and terrifying.

Network (1976)

Network is a black comedy about a fictional cable network, and it follows a broadcaster who does everything he can to overcome its poor ratings. On the face of it, it sounds like a raunchy situational comedy, but it was actually way ahead of its time.

In a short but succinct analysis, DuePast6 puts it best by saying that “the arguments about news being a public service rather than a money-making entertainment venture is as relevant as ever.” With so many news outlets favoring headlines over the contents just so they can get clicks, Network predicted the current news landscape 40 years beforehand.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? was the first movie to cross live-action with animation, and even now, people are talking about how much of a mark the film left on the industry. Fathah_Time explains that it’s “still the best blending of traditional animation and live-action ever put to film.”

It’s still one of the best in the sub-genre, and there are examples that speak to how innovative Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is even in 2021. Stand By Me (1986)

It’s hard to believe that Stand By Me is based on a story by Stephen King, as it’s one of the few that isn’t a horror. But ironically, though it sits a little outside his wheelhouse, the film is one of the best King movie adaptations.

Though NativeMasshole thinks it does still retain that 80s campiness, “it blends in well due to being a period piece set in the 50s.” And as Stand By Me is about youth and friendship, it’s a timeless coming of age movie, and there wasn’t anything else like it in 1986. Though, younger audiences will laugh at the computer that old Gordie types on.

Some Like It Hot (1959)

For a comedy that’s over 60 years old, it’s an incredible feat that Some Like It Hot was not only ahead of its time, but that it still holds up. The film is loved by MaboTofusauce, who was “really surprised when I watched it, how the comedy didn’t feel aged at all.”

The 1959 movie is about two musicians on the run from a gang, and to evade their crosshairs, they dress up as women and join an all-female band, but they both fall for the lead singer. The two men are hilariously incompetently stupid, and it has one of the most memorable final lines of dialogue for a movie ever.

Jurassic Park (1993)

When it comes to movies that were way ahead of their time, Jurassic Park is the obvious answer for many reasons. Detectivegreenly champions the movie for how timeless it is, saying that “the only thing that really dates it is the characters’ fashion.”

Jurassic Park’s CGI is better than the visual effects of most movies released now, and the reason why it’s so great is that the CGI and practical effects are blended seamlessly. The groundbreaking CGI is why Jurassic Park still holds up today. And even though the fashion might be very 90s, the outfits are just as iconic as the soundtrack.

The French Connection (1971)

The 1970s is a goldmine for great crime dramas, and The French Connection kicked everything off. The film follows a somewhat dirty cop tracking down a French heroin smuggler, and StygiesVIII_Zenarite believes it was way ahead of its time because of the epic police chase. They excitedly talk about it, saying, “goddamn, that chase is still the best.”

Forbidden Planet (1956)

If there’s one thing the 50s is known for, it’s all of the sci-fi B-movies. Even more famously, they have been parodied to no end in games like Destroy All Humans, and in films like Mars Attacks. But despite their reputation, Forbidden Planet stands above them all, and though it’s still has a B-movie quality to it, there’s a sheen that none of its peers have.

Reddit user BigBlueDogFish puts it best by saying that “this was so far ahead of its time for a 50s sci-fi.” Forbidden Planet truly is something special, and it defined a generation of movies. However, its special effects are still dated by today’s standards, which is why the cheesy sci-fi movie deserves a remake.

The Shining (1980)

Any one of Stanley Kubrick’s movies could have appeared, as so many of his directorial efforts were mentioned by Redditors, including 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr. Strangelove. Just as the Redditor says, the movie is timeless, and it’s still terrifying by today’s standards, so it’s hardly surprising that The Shining inspired other movies. What’s more impressive is that it’s so easy for horror movies to age horribly, as so many of them lean heavily on special effects, but the visuals in the 1980 movie are still exciting.

Citizen Kane (1941)

Even if filmmakers don’t know it, they are all influenced by Citizen Kane. The film essentially created the filmmaking rulebook for Hollywood. Whether it’s the depth of field of the shots, the editing, the music, or the non-linear narrative, the 1941 movie basically invented modern-day cinema.

PearlJamPony specifically points out the editing, which “makes it feel modern, even after 80 years.” Given that the movie is very close to a century old, it’s unbelievable how much the film still holds up, and it’s more compelling than most movies released today.
