Despite being released way back in 1999, there are few movies – in the found footage genre or otherwise – that have since managed to capture the same gnawing sense of dread and foreboding as The Blair Witch Project. Becoming something of a pop-culture phenomenon soon after its release, the movie’s popularity may have had something to do with the infamous rumors that the footage was real – though the revelation that it wasn’t didn’t do much to stifle its popularity.
For horror fans looking for movies with a similar vibe, however, look no further. Here are ten more movies to watch if you loved The Blair Witch Project.
10 The Last Exorcism
The Last Exorcism was unfortunately overlooked when it released back in 2010, finding itself lumped in with other terrible, found-footage cash-grabs being pumped out at the time. While the movie isn’t exactly a revelation, its interesting take on the tired demonic possession plot makes it a welcome addition to the found footage genre.
The movie follows cynical priest Cotton Marcus, who decides to document the last of his fake exorcisms – only to realize his latest client may be the real deal.
9 The Bay
It’s unusual to see a filmmaker as established and well-respected as Barry Levinson tackle the found footage genre, but The Bay marks a successful experiment for the Academy Award-winning director, earning him praise from critics despite its disappointing box office performance.
The movie chronicles the infection of Claridge, a coastal Maryland town that’s overrun by a deadly parasite living in its toxic waters. Told from multiple perspectives rather than just one, The Bay is more mockumentary than found footage movie – taking aim at humanity’s complacent attitude towards the impending ecological crisis without ever feeling preachy.
8 The Borderlands
Known in some territories as Final Prayer, The Borderlands follows Deacon and Gray – two men who are tasked with investigating a remote countryside church that’s said to have played host to a miracle. As the men begin to document their journey, it becomes clear that there may be a much more sinister force at work in the church.
Of all the found footage movies in existence, The Borderlands may just be the most underappreciated. Tight, claustrophobic, and thick with an atmosphere of dread, the movie is a worthy successor to The Blair Witch Project – boasting an ending that’s equally as unsettling.
7 The Taking Of Deborah Logan
When a trio of documentarians decides to make a film about Alzheimer’s disease, they end up on the doorstep of Deborah Logan, a local woman suffering from the disease. While the group initially chalk up her erratic behavior to the condition, they soon grow concerned that Deborah is being taken over by something far worse.
Don’t let The Taking of Deborah Logan’s bland title steer you away, it’s amongst the most bizarre and unique versions of the classic possession story out there – using its clever premise to ratchet up the tension and cast doubt on the group’s steadily mounting suspicions.
6 Creep
Something of a fan-favorite amongst fans of the genre, Mark Duplass’ Creep was a hit with critics and fans when it was released in 2014. The movie follows Aaron, a young videographer who gets more than he bargained for when he’s hired to film a home movie for a terminally ill man.
Duplass’ portrayal of the titular creep is the standout here, with the actor delivering a truly unhinged performance – with his character switching between charming, funny, eccentric and downright terrifying on a dime. Creep was so popular, in fact, that it even spawned a sequel – which is also well worth a watch.
5 The Sacrament
Though director Ti West isn’t known for his work in the found footage sub-genre, The Sacrament sees West’s horror talents return in full force. The movie follows fashion photographer Patrick as he attempts to extract his sister from a religious cult with the help of two journalists: reporter Sam and cameraman Jake.
West’s penchant for slow-burn horror works brilliantly in The Sacrament, with Gene Jones’ magnetic performance as the cult leader ‘Father’ serving as a compelling centerpiece for the movie’s gradually building tension – before all hell breaks loose in its hectic final minutes.
4 Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon
It’s more than likely that fans of The Blair Witch Project are also fans of the horror genre at large, and while Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon isn’t like the 1996 found footage classic in most ways, it plays to a similar audience.
A mockumentary following the exploits of Jason-wannabe Leslie Vernon, the movie sees its titular villain hire a documentary crew to chronicle his transformation into an infamous masked murderer. Subversive, funny and extremely meta, Behind the Mask’s playful examination of slasher tropes makes it essential viewing for fans of the genre.
3 Ghostwatch
Due to its status as a British TV movie, Ghostwatch can be relatively hard to track down – but for horror fans willing to seek it out, it’s a real treat. The movie aired in 1992 on Halloween night, presenting itself as a live ghost-hunting show that gradually begins to go very, very wrong.
Garnering 30,000 calls to the BBC after it aired, the movie caused quite the stir around the country, fooling many into believing the events taking place were real. Although Ghostwatch is very much a product of its time, the movie was a fantastically well-executed experiment that serves more credit than it gets.
2 REC
As bad a reputation as the found footage genre seems to have accrued over the years, REC is still one of the best foreign horror movies ever released. Following a news anchor, as she accompanies a crew of firemen to a quarantined building, it soon becomes clear that the high-rise is host to a horrifying outbreak of zombies.
Sure, the premise may seem overdone, but REC uses the found footage genre to maximum effect, feeling infinitely more authentic – and therefore terrifying – than any of its contemporaries. For what it’s worth, the movie’s sequel REC 2 ups the ante tremendously, and is definitely worth checking out.
1 Lake Mungo
Perhaps the most underappreciated mockumentary ever made, Lake Mungo is a chilling Australian movie about the tragic death of a young girl and the supernatural events her family begin to experience after the fact.
Not everything is quite as it seems though, with the story taking some unexpected turns throughout, culminating in one of the most harrowing found-footage sequences ever put to screen. What makes Lake Mungo so special though is its tremendous performances. Every single actor, small or large, is so convincing as part of the documentary that it’s easy to forget the movie is a work of fiction.
