Boasting one of the most passionate fanbases in all of gaming, the Silent Hill franchise has been a mainstay of the medium since the series’ first entry back in 1999. Something about the series’ creepy design, haunting music, and palpable atmosphere has had players hooked ever since. Following the death of the hotly anticipated Silent Hills, however, fans were left with nowhere to turn – often looking to the movies to get their fix of psychological horror.
Believe it or not, there’s a surprising amount of movies that take inspiration from the Silent Hill games, or at least manage to emulate its unique feel admirably well – and here are a few examples of exactly that.
10 Shutter Island
Martin Scorsese went through something of an experimental period in the early 2010s, releasing two movies back to back that didn’t quite match up with his usual output – 2010’s psychological thriller Shutter Island and 2011’s child-friendly adventure film Hugo.
Regardless, Shutter Island was a huge success – both financially and critically – and really seemed to strike a chord with fans of psychological horror. The movie follows Detective Edward Daniels as he travels to a psychiatric hospital on the movie’s titular island after one of its residents disappears.
9 The Shrine
While it’s not exactly the most critically acclaimed movie on this list, between its fog-filled setting and creepy central cult, The Shrine certainly gives off some serious Silent Hill vibes.
The movie follows a trio of journalists who investigate a rash of disappearances around the fictional town of Alvania, only to find themselves at the mercy of a relentless cult of masked killers. As it turns out, the cult’s activities may just have something to do with a bizarre statue found in the woods nearby.
8 The Mist
One of the most highly praised Stephen King adaptations around, The Mist is infamous for its bleak slant on the source material, containing one of the most shocking endings in all of horror fiction. The story centers around the patrons of a supermarket, who become trapped when the store is surrounded by a thick, deadly mist.
It’s not just the movie’s dense, pervasive mist that’s reminiscent of Silent Hill, however, but also the disturbing, cult-like behavior that arises from the store’s more fanatical residents.
7 Lost Highway
Though critics initially dismissed David Lynch’s unapologetically trippy Lost Highway due to its bizarre imagery and tough to decipher plot, the movie has since become a cult favorite, with many considering it a work of genius.
The movie tells the story of a musician who’s under suspicion for the murder of his wife before his identity inexplicably changes. Sure, the movie is likely to alienate those unfamiliar with Lynch’s previous work, but Lost Highway is definitely worth checking out for those interested in experimental psychological thrillers.
6 The Blackcoat’s Daughter
Perhaps the perfect example of slow-burn horror done right, The Blackcoat’s Daughter is amongst the most underrated horror movies of the last decade. Dripping with atmosphere and an intense sense of dread, the movie follows two girls who are forced to stay at their boarding school when their parents fail to pick them up for winter break.
To make matters worse, rumors of Satanic worship have begun to swirl around the school, making the girls’ stay at the school all the more unsettling.
5 Jacob’s Ladder (1990)
While a lot of movies on this list seem to draw inspiration from the Silent Hill series, Jacob’s Ladder actually inspired elements of Silent Hill, being released a full nine years before the first entry in the iconic video game series.
With its grotesque imagery and disturbing take on psychological horror, the movie became one of the most influential horror movies of the 90s. The story revolves around Vietnam veteran Jacob Singer, who fears for his sanity when he returns home only to experience a series of unsettling hallucinations.
4 In The Mouth Of Madness
Arguably the most bizarre movie of John Carpenter’s entire career, 1994’s In the Mouth of Madness follows insurance agent John Trent, who’s tasked with tracking down the enigmatic horror author Sutter Cane after he goes missing – only to become embroiled in a nightmarish, reality-altering mystery.
Gloriously trippy and loaded with meta elements, the movie successfully blends the kind of psychological horror found in Silent Hill with the cosmic dread of H.P. Lovecraft’s works.
3 Cure
Although it didn’t enjoy the same kind of widespread recognition as other J-Horror movies of the era – including Ringu and Ju-On – Cure is easily one of the most disturbing psychological horrors of the 1990s.
Its story focuses on a series of grisly murders investigated by the troubled Detective Takabe, who discovers that the only link between the killings is a mysterious and unstable man named Mamiya. Cited by celebrated director Bong Joon-ho as one of the greatest films of all time, Cure is a must-see for fans of Japanese horror.
2 The Void
Offering a nostalgic – albeit disturbing – throwback to classic 1980s horror, The Void heavily draws on a variety of influences, with many critics noting its similarities to the likes of Silent Hill, The Thing, and the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The movie centers on the residents of a hospital, who are tormented by a mysterious hooded cult – and the hideous creatures that seem to be in league with them. Boasting some truly impressive practical effects – which were crowdfunded on Indiegogo – The Void is somehow both grotesque and charming.
1 Session 9
Reportedly serving as inspiration for Team Silent during the development of the critically acclaimed Silent Hill 3, Session 9 is a psychological horror with atmosphere to spare. The movie follows a team of asbestos removal workers who are tasked with cleaning up a dilapidated mental asylum.
Naturally, their sanity soon takes a nosedive, and the men eventually struggle to differentiate fantasy from reality. Dark, creepy, and deeply unsettling, Session 9 didn’t exactly make a splash at the box office upon its release but has since become something of a cult classic.
