When it comes to mystery movies, it isn’t so much about the journey as it is about the massive pay-off when there’s a big reveal at the end. From Knives Out to Gone Girl, the twists and turns in movies usually amount to nothing if not for a satisfying and logical climax.
However, tons of mystery movies leave audiences cold, choosing to forgo any explanation of the events that viewers just watched. These endings are sometimes more exciting than if the mystery was resolved satisfyingly, as the open-ended finales leave viewers’ imaginations running wild. Whether the movie is based on a real-life serial killer who was never caught or it’s an ambiguous thriller based on Greek mythology, some mysteries are better left unsolved.
10 Zodiac (2007)
The Zodiac Killer was a real-life serial murderer who found most of his victims in Northern California in the late-60s. The story of the killer is especially haunting compared to other movies about real-life serial killers, as the case was never solved and the criminal was never caught.
Zodiac, one of David Fincher’s best movies, is massively faithful to the events that unfolded, including a time when the killer called in to live TV and the reports from victims of the killer who survived. And just like in real life, Zodiac is wrapped up in such an unsatisfying way, as the killer is never caught. However, the film does hint massively at one of the suspects that it could have been.
9 Memento (2000)
Though Following was Christopher Nolan’s directorial debut, it was his next movie that turned him into the most in-demand director almost overnight. Memento is non-linear, as the main narrative, in which a man with amnesia hunts down the man who murdered his wife, is shot backward.
When it reaches the end, which is actually the beginning of the narrative, audiences expect they’ll get answers. But being both written and directed by Nolan, nothing is that simple. The killer in Memento is never revealed, but there are some shocking hints as to who it could have been.
8 Blow-Up (1966)
Blow-Up follows a hip photographer in the ’60s who believes he has captured a murder when taking photographs in a park. The movie follows the photographer as he tries to uncover exactly what happened. His findings lead him to strange events, and at the end of the movie, viewers are left none the wiser.
Decades later, there was an American remake of the movie called Blow Out, which is almost as good, as it sees a movie developer try to uncover a crime instead of a photographer. It updates the story in a clever and modern way, which can’t be said for most remakes. But just like the original, the mystery is still left as exactly that, a mystery.
7 Memories Of Murder (2003)
Memories of Murder is very much a by-the-numbers detective movie, but it’s the absolute best of its kind. And just like Zodiac, the movie is based on actual events, as it begins with a woman’s body being found in a field just outside of Hwaseong, South Korea.
The movie is full of excitement, dark comedy, and thrilling detective work that any English-language movie would struggle to top. However, audiences are left cold, as although the film is full of twists and turns, the most shocking moment of all comes with the realization that none of it will actually get resolved.
6 Inception (2010)
The final shot of Inception might be the most talked-about movie mystery of all time. As the character of Cobb has spent years trying to return home to his children, he finally makes it, but he spins his totem to see if he’s still dreaming. If the spinning top stops, Cobb is awake, but if it keeps spinning, he’s still dreaming.
The movie cuts to black before audiences see the spinning top land, and even 11 years later, people are still debating what the truth is. There’s even a theory that the spinning top wasn’t Cobb’s totem at all, but his wedding ring, as the character wears it when he’s dreaming, but not when he’s awake. Regardless of what the truth is, the shot of the spinning top is the most memorable final shot of the 2010s.
5 Mulholland Drive (2001)
It’s hard to begin to talk about what the narrative of what Mulholland Drive even is, never mind how it’s left unresolved. The movie is set in an almost fantasy-like version of Hollywood, as all the events the unfold are so surreal. The David Lynch classic follows a woman with amnesia who is recovering from a car crash, but she has forgotten who she is.
As is the case with every project of Lynch’s, the narrative only creates more questions and provides none of the answers. Though the mystery is left unresolved, there is a clear answer, it’s just that nobody can figure it out, and the clues that Lynch included in the DVD box of the movie aren’t very helpful.
4 The Black Dahlia (2006)
Director Brian DePalma seemingly loves to leave viewers on the edge of their seats with a mystery left unsolved, as not only did he direct Blow Out, but he was at the helm of The Black Dahlia too. And just like most movies based on a real-life crime, the movie is highly dramatized, as it depicts the murder of Elizabeth Short.
Short was viciously murdered in 1947, and the film follows two LAPD detectives who haphazardly attempt to solve the case. Ironically, for a movie about such a brutal unsolved case, The Black Dahlia is beautiful in its representation of 1940s Los Angeles.
3 The Big Sleep (1946)
The Big Sleep is a great hard-boiled detective classic, as it kickstarted the noir genre and went on to inspire hundreds of movies that followed. But above all else, it set the precedent for many films of its era by not having a happy ending.
The movie is full of mind-bending twists and murders that will keep viewers guessing until the very end, but it is so much more than just a whodunnit. As explained on Den of Geek, Raymond Chandler, who wrote the novel on which the movie is based, once confessed that he never even knew who the killer was himself, and yet it doesn’t matter.
2 From Hell (2001)
Another movie that depicts a real-life killer that was never uncovered, From Hell follows the investigations into Jack the Ripper. As so little is known about the character, From Hell takes more liberties with the source material, especially as it’s based on a comic book that depicts the killer’s murders.
The movie follows Scotland Yard inspector Frederick Abberline, a real-life inspector who has an opium and absinthe addiction and was massively dramatized for the film. But this makes for a more entertaining thrill ride, even if it does end with the case unsolved, just like in real life.
1 Triangle (2009)
Triangle follows Jess, who goes on a boat trip with her friends, only to end up capsized in a storm and finding refuge in a strange, empty cruise ship in the middle of the sea. Something’s not right front the very beginning of the movie, and it leaves viewers scratching their heads the whole time.
There’s a killer on the ship, but the reveal just creates bigger questions and mysteries. Fans have come to their own conclusions and there are some convincing fan theories, such as that it’s a retelling of Sisyphus from Greek mythology, but it will forever be a mystery.
