10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

Social media has created a space for more opinions than ever before. In many cases, the voices that are new use their platform to let the voices that have always been there know about some of the language they are using, assumptions they are making, or jokes they are laughing at which makes them uncomfortable. The entertainment of yesteryear is often at the forefront of these confrontations, and children’s’ cartoons are no exception.

Here is a look back at a few jokes and concepts that are probably worth reconsidering. While old favorites need not be condemned or beloved characters defiled, watching what we watch, so to speak, is valuable, as media plays a significant role in the formation of tangible society. After all, an entire generation was raised on Nickelodeon.

10 Calling People “Hobos” In iCarly

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

It’s society’s fault for turning the tragedy of homelessness into the comical “hobo,” but iCarly took it from there with enthusiasm. The term is used in the program as a vague negative term (much like “gay” sometimes was once upon a time) and in worse cases applies to gags that involve the less fortunate.

Nickelodeon producers ultimately received the collective progressive feedback and have since stopped creating episodes with the word in addition to pulling old ones from syndication.

9 Animal Abuse In Hey Arnold!

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

Helga Pataki is known overwhelmingly for two traits: being cruel and being secretly in love with Arnold. “Helga’s Parrot,” then, is an incredibly fitting story arc for her, though it goes a little too far. As you could likely guess, the titular parrot overhears one of Helga’s signature longing rants for her football-headed dream man and, of course, takes to repeating it.

Things take a turn for the troubling when the cruel part comes in. Helga strangles and variously harasses her pet throughout the episode in an attempt to force its silence. While animals and violence are cartoon tradition, this case is morbid considering that people do own pet parrots and the show takes place within a relatively realistic world.

8 British Stereotypes In Fairly OddParents

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

If there’s anyone who has experienced relatively less offense for being who they are, it’s the previously empire-wielding, currently-generally-respected, British; but everyone is entitled to their callouts of cultural impropriety.

In “Twistory,” Timmy Turner pulls a textbook Bill & Ted, and brings historical figures into his home to help with his history schoolwork. Per usual, this has unintended consequences. With George Washington, Ben Franklin, and company tied up with an essay, the vision of America never has the opportunity to take shape. Before long, present-day would-be Americans start watching their teeth rot overnight as an alternate reality ensues. It’s a docile but persistent stereotype for the Nickelodeon show to have flaunted so celebratorily in the face of our now allies.

7 “A Hillbilly Moment” On The Amanda Show

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

The Amanda Show was an extremely unique program for children – a sketch show the likes of which has not been created for that age group often. An extremely talented group of young comedians were what made it possible. Most of them remained in the public eye for plenty of years following their time on the show.

The show and the aforementioned talented cast brought to life so many memorable, and often irreverent, characters. Perhaps too irreverent was this pair of “hillbillies,” who displayed problematic tropes of low education and improper hygiene for laughs.

6 A Pearl Harbor Joke In Rugrats

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

A sitcom-style laugh out loud Rugrats joke in which Grandpa Lou Pickles mentions Pearl Harbor is probably more in the category of a miss from the start. The gist is that old Lou is such a sound sleeper that he slept through the attack which resulted in thousands of American lives. Inherent in the writers’ decision to put this to paper is the conflict between the common phrases “too soon” and “never forget.”

5 A Racist Association In Jimmy Neutron

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

This one is more nuanced. Boy genius Jimmy Neutron concocts a chewing gum that transfers a classic novel straight into the chewer’s mind. Sheen gets Moby Dick, which he says tastes fishy of course. Cindy Vortex, for her part, finds that Gone with the Wind tastes like fried chicken. While it could be argued that fried chicken is a Southern cuisine, Cindy’s Mammy imitation puts it over the top as in poor taste.

4 Skin Color Choices In Doug

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

Doug Funnie is a pale-colored character who lives in a fictionally-designed world of people who are shades of blue, green, and much else. While this departure from skin color reality should allow a step away from the issues based on skin color which exist in our world, instead a hegemony is revealed. For inarguably-white Doug’s perspective to be the one from which the show is experienced reinforces the idea that it is a white world which others, whether amicably or not, occupy – a concept which is rampant throughout media representations.

3 Smoking In Ren & Stimpy

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

In the infamously crass Ren & Stimpy, there were plenty of jokes that went over kids’ heads or snuck past editors, but for the most part the humor can be found to be in good faith with today’s predominant sensibilities. One exception is the show’s depiction of smoking. When the show aired, smoking was still allowed in restaurants and only a few years prior had it been banned on planes. So while cartoonish goofballs with fire coming out of their ears is sort of funny, we’ve come a long way past the behavior being acceptable in a children’s show.

2 This Spongebob Remark

10 Nickelodeon Jokes That Aged Rather Poorly

SpongeBob is trying to convince his pet snail, Gary, to take a bath. One ploy involves making the whole miserable (to Gary) experience seem like a fun adventure. In that classic SpongeBob sing-song voice, he talks up a pirate voyage and then flashes two bars of soap in front of Gary’s eyestalks and says “Doubloons! Don’t drop ’em!”

This sly reference is to the familiar mock prison anecdote about dropping soap in the shower and being the victim of sexual abuse as a result. A hallmark of “woke culture” is simply recognizing how casually we sometimes make light of those less fortunate – the homeless (see list item 1), those struggling with severe mental illness, and those incarcerated – because of how distant their lives seem from our own.

1 And Of Course, “The Panty Raid”

The grand finale of a big night out for SpongeBob, Patrick, and tagalong Mr. Krabs is a “panty raid.” This form of nautical nonsense is pretty much what it sounds – sneaking into ladies’ underwear drawers and plundering.

While silly and not at all indicative of the typical behavior of SpongeBob and Patrick (that’s part of the joke in fact), it’s an invasive and objective concept. The offenders pay though, found embarrassed having raided the panties of none other than Mr. Krabs’ mother. Pictured above are her “bloomers,” as son Eugene puts it in the scene.
