Selma Blair has been working consistently in Hollywood since the mid-’90s. She became a household name in 1999 with the success of the cult-hit Cruel Intentions. Selma Blair has gone on to star in a wide genre of films throughout her twenty-year career and has had some great roles in television as well.

Most recently, Selma Blair has been back in pop culture news after revealing she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Since going public about her health, Selma Blair has become a role model and advocate for others with the same diagnosis, while continuing to work as an actress. Here are some of Selma Blair’s best roles, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

10 The Sweetest Thing (2002) – 27%

In this female-led comedy, Selma Blair stars with Christina Applegate and Cameron Diaz as a group of girlfriends living in San Fransisco, trying to navigate there way through dating and their own personal struggles with the opposite sex. Selma Blair gives a hilarious performance as Jane.

The film managed to gain really great numbers in the box office though critically, was not very well received for it’s thin plot and series of pointless gags.

9 Pretty Persuasion (2005) – 33%

In this 2005 dark comedy, Evan Rachel Wood plays Kimberly, a narcissistic, sociopathic high school student in Beverly Hills who accuses her drama teacher Percy Anderson (played by Ron Livingston) of sexual harassment.

The accusations become a media scandal, which Percy and his wife, Grace (played by Selma Blair) must deal with head on. The film received very good reviews and was nominated for the Grand Jury prize at Sundance the year it was released.

8 Cruel Intentions (1999) – 54%

This late ’90s dark comedy-drama starred an ensemble cast comprised of some of the biggest young stars of the time including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair.

In this film, Selma Blair plays Cecille Caldwell, a good girl that Gellar and Phillippe’s characters, Kathryn and Sebastian, use as a pawn in their own twisted game and set out to convert to the dark side.

7 Legally Blonde (2001) – 70%

In this comedy about a sorority girl turned Harvard Law Student, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair play polar opposites.

Reese Witherspoon plays Elle Woods, who has never taken her future seriously until her boyfriend breaks up with her because he’s decided to start taking his future more seriously and wants to date someone on the same page as him. Coincidentally, that someone is Vivian Kensington, played by Selma Blair.

6 Dark Horse (2011) – 70%

This critically acclaimed film is a bit obscure, but received very good reviews upon its premieres at both the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Selma Blair plays Miranda, a woman struggling with her mental health, who after a divorce who meets Abe, played by Jordan Gelber. The two hit it off despite Abe being the eponymous dark horse of his family, as he’s a middle aged man who still acts like a teenager. This film also stars Christopher Walken, Mia Farrow, and Justin Bartha.

5 Mom & Dad (2017) – 75%

Selma Blair and Nicolas Cage star in this dark horror comedy about a static that comes through a town, compelling parents to kill their own children.

Blair and Cage play Kendall and Brent Ryan, respectively, who are eventually taken over by the strange aura and begin attacking their own children. But at the same time, Kendall and Brent have to dodge their own parents, who have also been taken over by the murderous influence. This film somehow takes a very dark idea and makes it chaotic and obscure enough to be morbidly entertaining.

4 Hellboy (2004) – 81%

Hellboy is a fictional superhero character created for Dark Horse Comics. In the 2004 film, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, Selma Blair plays Liz Sherman, one of Hellboy’s closest allies and eventual love interest. Arguably, Liz is Blair’s most famous role to date.

Liz has checked herself into a mental institution because she’s discovered she has pyrokinetic abilities that she can’t control. Those abilities become an asset when Hellboy needs Liz’s help in destroying a group of evil-doers (namely leftover Nazis hellbent on bringing forth the apocalypse) led by a resurrected Rasputin.

3 In Good Company (2004) – 83%

This romantic comedy stars Dennis Quaid as a successful adverting executive named Dan, who is shocked to learn his company has been bought out and his new boss, Carter, who is significantly younger than him.

When Dan invites Carter over for dinner in an attempt to bond with his new boss, he gets more than he bargains for. Carter and Dan’s daughter, Alex, have instant chemistry, which complicates everything, especially for people in the office, like Selma Blair’s character, Kimberly.

2 Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) – 86%

Selma Blair returns to reprise her role as Liz Sherman in this sequel to the 2004 Hellboy film. In The Golden Army, Liz, who is now officially Hellboy’s girlfriend, really comes into her own and embraces her power.

The confidence Selma Blair exudes through this character is wonderful to watch, especially when comparing her portrayal of the same character in the first film. Liz has gained a new sense of self in this sequel and it shows through Selma Blair’s work.

1 The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016) – 93%

In this critically acclaimed and award winning mini-series about the OJ Simpson’s trial for the murders of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, Selma Blair plays Kris Jenner.

Jenner was one of Brown’s best friends, and she had her suspicions about OJ’s involvement in the murder from the very start. This was because she knew a lot of details of the amount of abuse going on in that marriage. Selma Blair and the rest of the cast were praised for their portrayals of these real people in this adaptation of a very intense true story.
