Sometimes, musicians will try their hand at acting. Other times, they make brief but memorable appearances on TV shows. The appearances aren’t always great, with a few, of late, leaving much to be desired (eh-hem, we’re talking to you Ed Sheeran in Game of Thrones) But if done just right, a cameo appearance by a musician on a TV show can make for a super exciting episode.

When the musician plays themselves, it’s funny to watch characters on a TV show act the same way any average Joe would when coming face-to-face with a musical idol. Whether the artist appeared in cameos as themselves or as a fictional character, and whether just a few moments or for several episodes, these appearances were all top-notch.

10 Prince (New Girl)

Prince was such a huge fan of the sitcom New Girl that he asked to be included in an episode. And of course, the producers eagerly obliged. He appeared in the third season in an episode where Jess and CeCe somehow got invited to a party at his house.

There, Nick finally revealed that he was in love with Jess! Thankfully, Prince was there to provide some sage advice. His involvement made little sense in such an integral moment of the plot, but let’s face it, it’s Prince. So, who cares? It was epic and marked his first-ever appearance on a sitcom.

9 Boyz II Men (The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air)

This episode came at a time when Boyz II Men were at the top of their game, so getting them on the show was pretty huge. They played themselves in an episode where Will kept promising that he could get the R&B group to perform at Baby Nicky’s christening. Of course, he couldn’t.

But by some stroke of luck, just when Will was about to reveal that he didn’t follow through and was going to disappoint everyone, they showed up in matching blue blazers and brought the house down.

8 New Kids On The Block (Fuller House)

It’s fitting that on a series that serves as a sequel to one that was famous in the 90s, Full House, the ladies would get the chance to meet one of their favorite bands from that time.

In the episode that had every woman in her 30s and 40s feeling nostalgic, Kimmy managed to get the guys to come to the house to sing Happy Birthday to D.J., their biggest fan after she was unable to get tickets to their sold-out concert she had promised. Of course, they obliged, but only if Kimmy promised to stop following them around. It was totally hilarious.

7 Color Me Badd (90210)

This one takes you way back, but if you consider how huge this R&B group was at the time, along with the series Beverly Hills, 90210, it was like two massive pop culture icons colliding.

In the episode, the guys happen to walk into the Peach Pit and the girls go gaga. Then, when Kelly tells them they need to sing for their lunch, instead of walking out in an arrogant huff, they do so. Because, well, these are pretty high school girls. Why not? Kelly ends up running into them again and getting to spend some quality time with them.

6 Bob Dylan (Dharma & Greg)

The appearance baffled viewers, but the fact that a musical legend was on a sitcom (a sitcom?) was amazing. He appeared in a 1999 episode where somehow, Dharma finds herself auditioning to play drums with him.

He doesn’t sing (darn!) but he does play the guitar in the episode. And Dharma weirdly tries to get him to play a polka with her. It was so random and puzzling, but a must-watch for any Dylan fan.

5 David Bowie (Extras)

Yes, the great David Bowie made an appearance on a sitcom. It was in 2002 when, somehow, Ricky Gervais managed to get him to come and play an exaggerated version of himself. While Andy (Gervais) is depressed about work, he lets it all out on Bowie at a VIP club.

Bowie then proceeds to sing an improvised song about Andy, calling him a “pathetic little fat man,” “banal and facile,” and “a fat waste of space.” It was totally Gervais’ style, completely out of character for Bowie, and utterly brilliant.

4 Britney Spears (How I Met Your Mother)

Technically Britney’s role wasn’t just a cameo, as the mega pop star actually played a character in two episodes. Her name was Abby and she was a receptionist at Stella’s dermatology clinic, who had a crush on Ted.

Despite her advances, however, Ted was more interested in Stella. Abby ended up sleeping with Barney then started stalking him after he didn’t call her after, even warning other women about his ways. She was a fun and crazy character.

3 Eminem (Entourage)

Because Entourage was about a young man who became a famous actor in Hollywood who brought all of his best friends along for the ride, there were tons of celebrity cameos. While Vinny Chase was a fictional actor, the story took place in the real Hollywood world.

Eminem’s appearance was brief, showing the iconic rapper in a fight with Vinny at a launch party for his album, Recovery. The scrap ended with Eminem politely asking a drunken and offensive Vinny to leave his party, then punching him in the face when Vinny tauntingly asked if he was “too mainstream” to fight his own fights anymore.

2 Will & Grace (Cher)

Any time an icon like Cher appears on a sitcom, it’s worth watching. And as an accomplished actor, as well, she perfectly played, well, herself, on the series. In the first appearance on Will & Grace, she meets Jack who mistakes her for a drag queen.

In the second, Jack is dreaming and his personification of God, of course, looks just like Cher. And let’s not forget her presence in every other episode, through Jack’s famous Cher doll that he talks to all the time.

1 Snoop Dogg (One Life To Live)

The rapper brought his talents to the daytime soap opera world, proving that he’s even more laid back and cool than you could imagine. He did what he does best and performed music on the show, as well as acted in a few scenes with the cast.

He made a second appearance and performed once again. Reportedly, Snoop has a soft spot for the soap, saying he has been a fan since “he was a baby,” as his mother always watched it when he was a child.
