Despite how old some of these classic games are, their graphics still stand the test of time and were amazing in their day. These are the standouts.

Some video games age like fine wine, while others, not so much. Sometimes the gameplay is to blame, but oftentimes visuals get criticized for not holding up compared to dazzling new titles. Then there are certain games that continue to look like a million bucks, even decades after initial release.

These are the titles that stick with gamers and keep drawing them back for any playthrough. The most advanced graphics engines in the world aren’t necessary for making a visual impact, as these 10 titles easily prove, just waiting for gamers to give them another shot.

10 Soulcalibur (Dreamcast)

Even without the benefit of modern-day high resolution, the Dreamcast port of Soulcalibur is still a graphical phenomenon that demands respect. In some ways, this port was even better than the arcade version and took full advantage of the Dreamcast’s superior rendering capabilities to dazzle players not used to such high fidelity visuals.

Soulcalibur’s character models and backgrounds are still excellent, but it’s the inclusion of extra content, such as individual character kata demonstrations, that really add a beautiful red bow to this package. For how old the game is, Soulcalibur still clings on to its legacy.

9 Grand Theft Auto V (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

It’s hard to believe, but Grand Theft Auto V is eight years old at this point, yet the game shows no signs of slowing down. Players are still actively engaged in the community, and the modding scene continues to crank out amazing new content, such as GTA V Remastered. In short, it’s still got a full tank of gas.

Visually, GTA V is still capable of giving newer PCs a run for their money, which is a testament to the world engine. Character models, environments, and of course, the cars are beautifully rendered, and look as good as they did on the day of release. That’s no easy feat.

8 God Of War (PlayStation 2)

The original God of War is showing signs of age in the texture department, especially when it comes to resolution. That doesn’t mean the game has suffered terribly in a post-4K world. In fact, God of War still has a lot to offer when it comes to visuals, thanks largely to how they’re implemented.

Sure, textures look a bit muddy here, but frame rates are still solid, and that’s important for those massive boss battles that take up the entire screen. That’s part of the game’s charm – the constant reinventing of itself with each new area. God of War won’t throw in the towel, even if many gamers have since moved on to the newest chapter.

7 Crysis 3 (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

The original Crysis was once used as a theoretical benchmark for every PC build after 2008, and that’s a testament to its visuals. Since that time, it’s been revealed that the game wasn’t nearly as optimized as it should have been, a fact made clear by the recent Crysis Remastered re-release, which stuck to the original’s focus on single-core CPU performance.

Fast forward two games, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by Crysis 3. This is one amazing-looking world – a mixture of modern cityscapes overrun with nature seeking to reclaim its territory. This is easily one of the most visually astonishing games ever made, which isn’t half-bad for a game that dropped in 2013.

6 Contra III: The Alien Wars (Super NES)

This one takes us back all the way to the 16-Bit age when the Super Nintendo was battling the Sega Genesis for dominance. One of the key titles in its arsenal was a 16-Bit follow-up to the smash hit Contra franchise, which debuted on the NES with three games. It was also one of the most frantic and adrenaline-pumping shooters ever made.

Even today, Contra III looks flat-out spectacular, thanks to a mixture of insane explosions, psychedelic effects, massive boss fights, and rapid-fire pacing. The entire game is one long bout of tachycardia crammed into a cartridge, and it still holds up in the looks department, despite being nearly 30 years old.

5 Half-Life 2 (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

Half-Life may have taken the FPS world by storm, but it was the sequel that truly solidified its reputation as a godfather shooter. The sequel was an improvement on the original, thanks to Valve’s use of the Source 2 engine, which greatly amplified the graphics, textures and environments of the game.

Even though graphic technologies have leapfrogged several times since it debuted, Half-Life 2 still makes gamers straighten up and salute whenever its name is mentioned. With spectacular lighting, texture and environmental tricks up its sleeve, the game manages to look fresher than its 2004 release date might suggest.

4 Far Cry 2 (PlayStation, Xbox, PC)

Of all the Far Cry games, the second is the one that gamers still keep looking back on with fond memories. It’s hard to imagine why, since Far Cry 2 was, by far, the most unforgiving and punishing of the entire franchise. Any game that forces the player to start off sick with malaria and keep scouting for medication is one hardcore offering.

On the graphical front, Far Cry 2 is absolutely brilliant. It’s a masterclass in world-building design, and the feeling of actually being there is still present. Sure, the franchise might be utilizing advanced new engines, but for some reason, Far Cry 2 keeps giving them a run for their money.

3 Killzone 2 (PlayStation 3)

Killzone 2 is notorious for a controversial E3 trailer that didn’t actually run on the game’s final engine. This caused a bit of a fuss, but it soon faded away when the final game dropped. Killzone 2 looked brilliant, and it still does. Even though the PlayStation 3 has long since been put out to pasture, this FPS title wears its stripes proudly.

The dank, moody atmosphere, foreboding lighting effects and industrial world textures are still top-notch, as is the bone-crushing gameplay. There’s an argument to be made for the game to be ported to other platforms in the same way that Horizon Zero Dawn was ported to PC last year. Let’s hope somebody is listening.

2 Homeworld 2 (PC)

The original Homeworld might be a fan favorite, but it’s showing its age in the texture and model department. The recently released Remastered pack did the game justice in the same way that it beefed up the sequel for a new audience, as well. How about the original Homeworld 2, though? Does it stack up?

Thankfully, yes. Sure, it’s getting long in the tooth, but it’s hard to accurately convey just what a major visual jump occurred between this title and the original. Even outside of its Remastered form, Homeworld 2 is still one of the most amazing and beautiful space strategy games ever made.

1 Alien Soldier (Sega Genesis)

The Sega Genesis was limited by a 64 color palette, which didn’t spell good news for its chances against the Super NES. However, the 16-Bit gaming machine managed to hold its own, thanks largely to developers who were able to leverage the hardware to craft amazing titles like Alien Soldier.

Yes, many Genesis games look the part, but Alien Soldier was something else, entirely. Massive sprites, silky-smooth gameplay and big explosions are just a few highlights. For an aged 16-Bit title running on a limited set of colors, it sure does manage to wow the eye more than 25 years after the fact.
