10 Open-World Games To Play Before The Release Of Elden Ring
A selection of open-world action RPGs Souls fans need to check out before From Software debuts Elden Ring in February of 2022.

Dark Souls, the spiritual successor to both Demon’s Souls and King’s Field, was one of the most influential games of the past decade. Innovative, uncompromising, and legendarily difficult, it initially seemed destined for relatively niche success, but its legacy grew to such an extent that, in 2021, it won the Golden Joystick Award for Ultimate Game of All Time.
While every modern From Software release enjoys an incredible amount of pre-release hype, Elden Ring, their forthcoming effort, seems to be on another level. With a few months to go until the game hits store shelves, here are 10 games fans may want to sink their teeth into in the meantime.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The 2017 Switch launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a bold step forward for a franchise that had grown a bit stale by the mid-2010s. Ditching the rigid structure of previous games and embracing open-world design philosophies in ways rarely seen to that point, it was a trendsetter that still stands as a high-water mark for both the series and the genre.
While From Software’s collection of hardcore action RPGs is typically considered to be beyond compare, those who got a chance to playtest Elden Ring compared its broad, open world to what was seen in Nintendo’s most recent mainline Zelda release.
Mortal Shell
The term “Souls-like” is often met with derision. While emulating From Software’s grueling gothic atmosphere and intricate combat mechanics is no small task, gamers often feel that titles chasing this trend come off as unoriginal and unimaginative.
While it copies heavily from the Dark Souls playbook, Cold Symmytery’s 2020 release Mortal Shell does so with enough elegance to warrant a recommendation. Despite being much smaller in scope when compared to the Dark Souls games, Mortal Shell introduces new and interesting gameplay mechanics which will excite new souls-like players and keep veteran ones on their toes.
Ghost of Tsushima
Suckerpunch’s 2020 PS4-exclusive Ghost of Tsushima feels like a video game adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress. Set on the island of Tsushima during the Mongol Empire’s invasion of Japan in the thirteenth century, it tells the story of a Samurai who must quest and conquer to preserve his way of life.
Warranting comparisons to the Batman Arkham games and to From Software’s own Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Ghost of Tsushima emphasizes exploration and incites the same sense of adventure felt when playing a Souls game for the first time.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
CD Projekt Red’s third installment in the Witcher series may be fairly far removed from From Software’s infamously difficult action RPG series, but those without any experience in the genre looking to jump into Elden Ring may want to cut their teeth on something a bit more forgiving.
The Witcher 3 may place a greater emphasis on direct narrative and explicit storytelling via specific quests, but it’s a well-realized, uncompromising action RPG in its own right, and those who can complete Geralt’s quest across the Continent will find themselves all the more ready for From Software’s next outing.
The Surge 2
Double-A developer Deck 13 was at the forefront of the Souls-like genre. Releasing Lords of the Fallen in 2014, they drew both acclaim and criticism for so precisely copying From Software’s iconic atmosphere, level design, and combat stylings. They would then go on to make The Surge, a game that maintained the typical Souls-like trappings but transported players to a far-future world.
The Surge 2 iterated on the work done by the original, opening the map up and refining the pace of proceedings. Elden Ring looks to be a fantastically more massive game, but those who enjoy the Souls series may well get a kick out of The Surge 2.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Comparing open-world games to Bethesda’s 2011 RPG classic Skyrim is far beyond played out at this point, but, ten years after its initial release, the fifth mainline Elder Scrolls installment remains a standard-bearer in both the RPG and open-world genres.
The combat isn’t quite as intense, and the roleplaying aspects are much more robust, but, often considered one of the best games of all time despite its persistent issues, Skyrim is an all-time RPG great. It’s likely that comparisons to Skyrim will be relatively common once Elden Ring is finally available for all to play.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
2014’s Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor was heralded as a highlight of the first few years of the eighth console generation, but the eventual follow-up, Shadow of War, was initially brought down by the much-reviled integration of loot box mechanics. Four years after release, however, Shadow of War is a must-play title for fans of open-world games.
Set in the Lord of the Rings universe, Shadow of War is best known for its memorable boss encounters and iconic nemesis system which saw rivals who bested the player becoming more involved in the overarching story. Much like Elden Ring, it’s a high fantasy open-world adventure with boundaries only dictated by the player.
Hollow Knight
Though it’s often considered to be a Souls-like and it borrows some key mechanics from From Software’s legendary games, Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight fits more precisely into the Metroidvania genre. A 2D title that features an utterly sprawling and complex world, those who played games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night or the recent Metroid Dread will be exploring familiar gaming territory.
Hollow Knight may be the product of a much smaller team, but it is every bit as ambitious as Elden Ring. Massive, incredibly detailed, and loaded with content, Souls fans looking for their next fifty-plus hour fix need look no further.
Shadow of the Colossus
From Software may have blazed a path for Dark Souls’ success with games like Demon’s Souls and the much earlier King’s Field series, but, in some sense, Team Ico’s PS2 classic Shadow of the Colossus was also an important forerunner. Sprawling yet desolate, atmospheric yet suffocating, it featured tones and themes that would be replicated almost exactly by Dark Souls years later.
Beyond that, the game’s varied and unique boss encounters feel distinctly Souls-esque despite the completely different gameplay approach, and it’s likely that exploring Elden Ring’s massive overworld will feel at least somewhat comparable to this timeless PlayStation title.
Dark Souls
Obviously, those looking to get into Elden Ring when it launches in February of 2022 owe it to themselves to experience at least one From Software game prior to its release. It may not be the most refined experience, and the 2018 remaster may not have added much of anything, but Dark Souls remains a must-play for just about every gamer.
With a unique and surprisingly interconnected world and a host of varied regions to explore, Dark Souls doesn’t play like Elden Ring is expected to in terms of exploration, but Elden Ring’s design is undoubtedly rooted in From Software’s first surprise mega-success, and it’s more or less a pre-requisite to their upcoming title.
