The villain of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Count Olaf, is an iconic literary figure and will continue to be portrayed in film and television for years to come. In 2004, Jim Carrey starred as Count Olaf in the film adaptation of the books, pleasing many fans in the process.
Several of the things that Carrey’s Olaf says during the film are incredibly outrageous, further showing the extent of the character’s evil. More often than not, Count Olaf’s dialogue is hilarious, making him one of the funniest villains in pop culture. Read on for 10 outrageous quotes from Jim Carrey’s Count Olaf.
10 “I Must Say, You Are A Gloomy-Looking Bunch. Why So Glum?”
From the moment he appears on the screen, Count Olaf is outrageously insensitive. This becomes clear when he fails to understand why the Baudelaire children seem upset. “I must say, you are a gloomy-looking bunch. Why so glum?” he asks. Luckily, Klaus puts him right in his place with a swift answer: “Our parents just died.”
9 “It’s The Swedish Term For Beef That Is Roasted.”
Although just about everything that comes out of Count Olaf’s mouth is offensive to the orphans in one way or another, a lot of what he says is also hilarious. When Violet asks him to repeat his dinner order of roast beef, he completely patronizes her by saying, “It’s the Swedish term for beef that is roasted.” The irony of the scene lies in the fact that, in terms of intelligence, Violet runs rings around Olaf.
8 “I’m Sorry. I Don’t Speak Monkey.”
Count Olaf doesn’t get along with any of the Baudelaire children but he takes a particular disliking to Sunny. Still not able to communicate properly, Sunny interacts with Olaf through a series of baby noises.
Of course, Olaf has a sarcastic response: “I’m sorry. I don’t speak monkey.” He also tries to humor her by talking gibberish, further embarrassing himself.
7 “You Know, They Used To Call Me Old MacDonald Up At The Milking Lab.”
Throughout the film, Count Olaf appears as a range of different disguises. Stefano is one of the funniest, particularly when Uncle Monty tries to get him to milk the snake. Olaf eventually accepts that he can’t milk the snake, but before he does, he tries to go along with it: “You know, they used to call me Old MacDonald up at the milking lab.” At least he thinks on his feet!
6 “No Matter Where You Go, No Matter What You Do, I Will Find You!”
This line is both terrifying and hilarious. Count Olaf threatens the children by telling them that he’ll always find them, no matter where they go after they are removed from his custody the first time. It’s funny because he snarls it at them a millisecond after pretending to lament their departure. And it’s also terrifying because he really does find them, no matter where they go and what they do.
5 “Children Are Strange And Foreign To Me. I Never Really Was One.”
Upon listening carefully to Count Olaf’s words, it becomes clear that the character is totally out of his mind. While playing the character of Stefano at Uncle Monty’s house, he tries to get out of spending time with the children with this excuse: “Children are strange and foreign to me. I never really was one.” It’s unclear why Uncle Monty doesn’t call him out right there on his nonsense!
4 “Now, Who Shall Play The Most Handsome Count In All The World?”
Along with being greedy, murderous, and cruel, Count Olaf is also exceedingly vain. As it were, he’s also delusional when it comes to his talent as an actor and his looks.
This is something else that makes his character entertaining to watch. With lines like this, the audience is constantly reminded of how highly he thinks of himself and Jim Carrey pulls it off perfectly.
3 “All I Ask Is That You Do Each And Every Little Thing That Pops Into My Head While I Enjoy The Enormous Fortune Your Parents Left Behind.”
Most of the time, Count Olaf lies to get what he wants, coming up with one untruth after another to explain why he’s the best person to look after the orphans. So when he utters this refreshingly honest line, most fans can’t help but laugh. “All I ask is that you do each and every little thing that pops into my head while I enjoy the enormous fortune your parents left behind,” he says to Violet, as if he’s not completely out of line.
2 “Hello, I’m Going On A Perfectly Innocent Ride In The Country With My Kids … Whom I Love.”
After Count Olaf parks his car on the train tracks and enters the store, he announces to the shop assistant, “Hello, I’m going on a perfectly innocent ride in the country with my kids… whom I love.” What makes this so funny is how unnatural it is—Olaf couldn’t be further from a loving father figure. As evidenced by lines like this, he’s also not a great actor.
1 “I Will Raise These Orphans As If They Were Actually Wanted.”
There are times when Count Olaf intends to offend the Baudelaire children. But then there are also times when he genuinely believes what he’s saying is polite. Lines like “I will raise these orphans as if they were actually wanted” clearly convey how out of touch with reality and insensitive the character is.
