10 Previously Popular Reality TV Shows That Have Since Been Forgotten

Throughout the years, reality television shows have come and gone, received reboots, spin-offs, and even gave viewers a deep dive into the life of “normal” people that got their shot on television. Some reality shows are hard to imagine actually being real, while others seem pretty legit; but nonetheless, they are extremely satisfying to watch. Sometimes viewers need an escape from their own reality, hence the attraction to this type of television.

The idea of reality television has been around since the early-1990s and has only gotten more clever and juicier over the years. Viewers can admit or deny they’ve had plenty of binge-worthy television sessions, knocking out episode after episode to see what comes next; but as companies continue to churn out show after show, fans have probably forgotten some of the best (or the worst) shows that have ever been on television.

10 Jersey Shore

When Jersey Shore first catapulted onto the scene in 2009, it was definitely a defining moment in reality television. Whether people wanted to fess up or not, they were watching before they went out on the town or were re-watching because it was just so binge-worthy.

The crew was wild, R-rated and somehow made this show last until 2012. The cast has since gone about their own lives and made names for themselves. Since the original show ended, fist-pumping and gym-tan-laundry have never been the same.

9 Fear Factor

Hosted by successful comedian and podcaster Joe Rogan, Fear Factor became a thing of nightmares for people living with phobias. This was a reality game show that tested the limits of its contestants, while viewers at home could sit and watch with horror…safely.

For seven seasons, people willingly signed up for the show to endure their most primal fears and perform stunts to ultimately take home the grand prize. While the contestants were impressive, this show was definitely one of Joe Rogan’s most successful television efforts to date.

8 The Girls Next Door

For six seasons, viewers had the pleasure of taking a peek beyond the front doors of the Playboy Mansion and seeing how serial-dater Hugh Hefner lived with his girlfriends. This was probably a dream of sorts for some, as the late Hugh Hefner lived the dream with multiple young girlfriends while trying to run his business.

For years, it was Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson, as they called the mansion home while trying to make a name for themselves.

7 Bad Girls Club

When a group of women that are strangers gets together for a reality show, things can get interesting. The Bad Girls Club was one of a kind, as it followed a rebellious group of women that are given free alcohol while trying to tame their behavior and their lives at home.

It was pretty wild at times, but nonetheless, it was an extremely popular show in its prime. Despite waning viewership, it’s somehow going on 17 seasons and still running.

6 The Simple Life

When people are taken out of their comfort zone, they act a certain way but often adapt. When two extremely rich socialites are given a reality show about living “the simple life,” things never really settle down. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie were best friends at the time and decided it would be a good idea to accept various internships along the east coast.

While they left their comfortable lifestyle back at home, they endured a normal life and the people in it, which was different for them.

5 Pimp My Ride

For six seasons, rapper Xzibit had a mission to find a normal person with an extremely beat down car and turn it into gold. Pimp My Ride was a breath of fresh air of MTV, as it didn’t follow the path of other shows on the channel at the time and actually used some creativity within the craft.

Viewers were given the opportunity to see the transformation from start to finish and revel in how cool the finished product was. Any teenager at the time dreamt about a car that was on this show and still probably does to this day whenever they remember it.

4 Room Raiders

As if reality shows couldn’t get less far from reality, Room Raiders was born. Three “unsuspecting” contestants are ripped out of their homes, in the middle of whatever they are doing, and made to sit in a van to see an attractive man or woman go through their belongings.

This was kind of a unique spin on the dating scene, as the person inspecting the rooms had to base his or her picks on the room, without knowing what the person looks like.

3 Making The Band

Hip-hop legend P. Diddy was on a mission when he signed up for Making the Band. He already made his millions in the music industry and wanted to give back and provide direction and moral support for up and coming talent throughout the country.

His first successful group was called Danity Kane, which had some success once they started shooting music videos and pushing out albums. The show went through three iterations totaling 12 seasons.

2 Flavor Of Love

In the mid-2000s, dating shows became extremely popular. Since people also liked to watch people make fools of themselves, networks such as MTV, Oxygen, and VH1 opted to provide the platform for shows such as Flavor of Love.

For three seasons, rapper Flavor Flav was the object of affection for dozens of women that wanted to win over his love and live happily ever after. Flavor Flav tried this for a few years and nothing stuck, which ultimately ended the show, and his quest for reality show love.

1 My Super Sweet 16

Every teenager dreams of turning 16 because they are given a little more freedom and hopefully a driver’s license. For teens watching at home, the show My Super Sweet 16 was popular because they had the opportunity to see inside a wealthy teenager’s “Sweet 16” birthday party. There was no detail missed and if there was, the parents made sure it was heard about.

While these teenagers were not relatable because they had access to millions of dollars, it was entertaining to watch them throw temper tantrums and revel in their sweet ride or epic musical performances of their dreams.
