With the recent release of Hawkeye introducing Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop into the MCU, the ever-expanding universe continues to bring more characters from their comic book pages to life. Entering the franchise are actors with great performances under their belts, along with actors who are just getting started. MCU newcomers have recently featured in larger-than-life sci-fi epics, historical dramas, modern westerns, and other genres that showcase their acting chops and some of the attributes they’ll bring to the franchise.
Marvel Studios has an impressive track record in casting iconic characters and with more films and series from the franchise on the horizon, fans should check out recent projects featuring MCU newcomers to get familiar with the new actors if they aren’t already.
I Don’t Wanna B Alone
Iman Vellani has a bright future ahead as she’s set to portray Kamala Khan in the Ms. Marvel series next year. Not only will she be a beacon of representation for the expanding MCU roster but also one of its newest faces. Though she has no major acting credits under her belt just yet, she has directed and starred in the short film i don’t wanna b alone, which almost serves as a prelude to her debut as Kamala.
The short showcases her love for Marvel as a whole and her admiration for Iron Man as the stop motion portion of the short sees the two characters dancing together. Unfortunately, we won’t get to see Kamala Khan and Tony Stark interact in live-action, but the short film encapsulates the spirit of Kamala that MCU fans will see in Ms. Marvel.
One Night In Miami
The main villain of Secret Invasion hasn’t been revealed just yet but it will be portrayed by Kinglsey Ben-Adir, who stood out as Malcolm X in One Night In Miami in a fictionalized account of the 1964 meeting between Malcolm X, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke, and Muhammed Ali.
It’s a tall task to portray one of the most well known Civil Rights figures in history, especially after Denzel Washington gave one his best performances as the same man in 1994’s Malcolm X. Ben-Adir’s talent and performance doesn’t suffer from comparison as he brings a unique range to immortalize the iconic figure.
Last Christmas
There has been much speculation as to what role Emilia Clarke will have in Secret Invasion but fans should expect nothing less than greatness from her time on screen. The role of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones will always be Emilia Clarke’s most iconic role but the range of acting throughout her time on the show has been showcased in other projects of hers like Last Christmas.
In the romance comedy, she plays an aspiring singer who falls for a charming but ambiguous man during Christmas in London. Her performance is nothing less than charming and is a fun watch during the holiday season.
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things
Kathryn Newton recently scored the role of Cassie Lang in the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and is no stranger to plots involving time travel. With Cassie Lang being a character heavily affected by the time jump in Avengers: Endgame, fans should be excited to see what Newton brings to the character. In The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, the actor plays Margaret who’s trapped in a time loop and looks to break it.
Characters like Margaret who are stuck in a time loop and being forced to repeat the same day are nothing new, but Newton brings something fresh to the material. She’s magnetic in almost every scene that she’s in and grounds the sci-fi romantic comedy in a way that only she can.
Dopesick
Adam Warlock is a Marvel fan-favorite and after being teased in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it has been revealed that Will Poulter will be portraying the character. Poulter has had his fair share of solid performances throughout his career including his work in Dopesick which sheds light on the struggles of opioid addiction.
Billy Cutler evolves from a passionate sales rep working for Purdue Pharma to a vigilante of sorts, fighting against the opioid crisis from within the same company he works. Poulter gives an outstanding performance as his character represents multiple angles of the American opioid crisis.
Judas And The Black Messiah
Dominique Thorne doesn’t have many acting credits to her name as of now, but she has shown lots of potential as an actor as she’s been cast as RiRi Williams in the Ironheart series. Though she doesn’t have much screen time in Judas and the Black Messiah, her performance of Black Panther member Judy Harmon shouldn’t go unnoticed.
Judy was portrayed as a strong and protective character on the front lines of the Black Panther Party who was passionate about the cause she was fighting for. Thorne makes the most of her time on screen and gives a powerhouse performance that will carry over to the MCU.
Ramy
The stacked filmography of Mahershala Ali will soon include the likes of Blade as he will portray the MCU’s Eric Brooks across the next few phases of the franchise. With a career that’s beginning to stack up with some of the greats, his recent appearances in Ramy have been endearing as he plays a disciplined spiritual mentor to the titular character.
While there are many starring roles fans have seen and recognized Ali in, his supporting role in Ramy showcases his poise and magnetic energy as the Sheikh in one of his more underrated recent roles.
The Harder They Fall
Though Majors has already made his MCU debut in episode 6 of Loki as He Who Remains, we have yet to meet the larger variant of the character: Kang the Conquerer. Majors is becoming a top-tier actor as showcased in Loki, as well as his 2021 starring role in The Harder They Fall which sees his character Nat Love on a quest for revenge after his enemy escapes from prison.
Based on the real-life black cowboy, Majors gives one of the best performances of his young career amongst a stacked cast. His charisma helps highlight the themes of redemption and untold Black history throughout this modern Western as Nat Love gathers his old gang back together to avenge his parent’s death.
Pink Wall
Before being cast as the green fourth-wall-breaking Jennifer Walters in the upcoming She-Hulk series, Tatiana Maslany has had a lot of successful acting credits to her name in recent years. In perhaps one of her more underrated roles, Maslany stars as Jenna in Pink Wall which tells the story of two characters over six years and the experiences they endure throughout their fractured partnership.
Maslany’s character is genuine and authentic but mostly relatable to the audience. Jenna and her opposite Leon (played by Jay Duplass) find themselves doing and saying things that audiences would do themselves amid an epic rise and fall of a romantic relationship.
Dune
The Moon Knight series will have Oscar Isaac in the role of the titular Marc Spector. In Dune he portrays Duke Leto, the father of Timothee Chalamet’s Paul in a story that follows their House Atreides as they find themselves in the middle of a war for the desert planet Arrakis.
Isaac gives a heartfelt performance as not only a man put in a difficult position after accepting stewardship of Arrakis but as a father who genuinely cares for his family and the people surrounding him. As a monarch, he showcases his ability as a leader through values of peaceful means and courage as he attempts to bring peace to Arrakis and prepare his son for the future that lies ahead.
