Replay value is difficult to come by in video games these days and many don’t have the same spark the second time around. When replaying, gamers might start a new game for a different experience, or in order to find secrets or Easter eggs that they didn’t uncover in their first playthrough.
The original Playstation is home to many classic games, some of which have loads of replay value that has gamers keep coming back for more. Whether it’s an alternate ending, or just wanting to try out a new character or two, these games have enough replay value to reel anyone back in.
10 Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko
Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko, like its prequel, may be known for its humor, platforming level design, and of course, its nostalgic video game mascot protagonist. But its replay value, however, is mostly overlooked. But it has a lot of sidequests for players to complete, as well as alternate routes where TV remotes can be collected.
The TV remotes in Gex 3 drives up the game’s replay value, as collecting them is necessary to unlock new levels. Many of these new levels even have TV remotes themselves, meaning more for one to collect. Aside from the remotes, the overworlds in Gex 3 offer small, yet difficult missions for the player to complete.
9 Crash Team Racing
Crash Team Racing is your classic kart racing game, with power-ups and speed boosts galore. It has its very own adventure mode, as well as an Arcade mode where players can either race in a time trial or participate in Cups. CTR’s Versus mode allows players to duke it out against one another on a racing battlefield.
Perhaps most of the game’s replay value comes from the adventure mode, which has a few challenges for just about every racetrack. Collecting tokens or gathering crystals in these challenges unlocks Gem Cups, which can later unlock secret characters should you come in first.

One of the best features of The Second Story is the team creation ability, which allows you to create items such as potions and weapons, among many others. Players who find item creation too taxing for them can either rummage around in secret dungeons or even partake in a battle arena.
7 Resident Evil 2
Much like Star Ocean: The Second Story, Resident Evil 2 features two main protagonists – Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. As such, players can play in two different campaigns, each one having its own set of scenarios. There is also a battle mode, where players can unlock Chris Redfield and Ada Wong.
Aside from the battle mode, Resident Evil 2 has two survivor minigames – “The 4th Survivor” and “The To-fu Survivor.” In “The 4th Survivor,” the player controls a character named Hunk and has to battle through enemies to reach the goal, albeit with limited weaponry. “The To-fu Survivor,” on the other hand, features a Tofu who only has a knife for its weapon.
6 Final Fantasy Tactics
One of the staples of Final Fantasy is the character class system, which gives characters jobs and players plenty of customization options. Final Fantasy Tactics makes heavy use of this class system, granting the players 20 different jobs to choose from. Each job comes with its abilities and upgrading system, providing much room for exploration.
In total, there are 300 missions for players to complete in Tactics, and many of them require a high level of strategy. Each mission is varied in its own way, and players can experiment fighting on each battlefield depending on what job they choose.
5 Tekken 3
It’s no secret that Tekken 3 is one of the best games in the history of the fighting video game genre. This game boasts a roster of 22 characters, introducing more than a dozen newcomers. Each character has its own unique fighting style, and the combos you can learn are endless.

While the arcade version of Tekken 3 is engaging enough on its own, the PlayStation version takes it up a notch with several game modes. Players can play a side-scrolling beat-em-up mini-game called “Tekken Force,” or playing something akin to beach volleyball in “Tekken Ball.” Not only that, but there’s plenty of secret characters and outfits to unlock as well.
4 Crash Bandicoot: Warped
Collecting items is the name of the game in the Crash Bandicoot series, and Warped – one of the best Crash Bandicoot games around – has items aplenty. Besides gathering crystals to progress through the game, players also have to collect colored gems, which can be obtained by breaking all the crates in a level or completing a secret area. The effort to obtain gems is quite challenging and can leave players coming back for more.
Earning relics is also required to 100% the game, and can be obtained in Time Trial mode. Essentially, one must race through the level before time runs out, breaking numbered crates to stop time. Since no lives are lost in Time Trial mode, players are free to attempt as many times as they like.
3 Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night
Symphony of the Night is the sleeper hit in the Castlevania series, featuring the half-vampire known as Alucard. Staying true to the side-scrolling gameplay the series is known for, SotN has plenty of exploration and even RPG elements to offer. There’s even a level-up system in place, as Alucard can gain experience and increase his attributes.
Although Alucard is undoubtedly the star of this game, players can also play as Richter and play SotN from a different perspective. Those who wish to grind out the game can level up Alucard/Richter to level 99, or collect all the rare items in the game.
2 Metal Gear Solid
On the surface, the original stealth action game classic, Metal Gear Solid, doesn’t seem like it offers enough replay value. Beating the game to either a “good” ending or a “bad” ending sounds enticing enough for some. However, there is an even bigger incentive to keep players coming back to play this masterpiece.
There is a ranking after beating the game, which shows factors such as the number of times saved, the number of rations eaten, and the number of times a player either died or was spotted. Players who want to achieve a high ranking can replay this game until they achieve the highest rank in FOXHOUND possible.
1 Final Fantasy VII
Many Japanese RPGs have high replay value, and Final Fantasy VII is no different. The game is littered with side quests and optional quests, and there are plenty of secrets for one to discover. Players can also experiment with teams and different kinds of Materia that they wouldn’t have done in their original playthrough.
Perhaps most of the game’s replay value comes in Hard Mode. With an MP restriction in place, players have to apply everything they learned from battling in their first run. If Hard Mode isn’t their cup of tea, there is also a Battle Square for gauntlet-style matches.
