10 Recent RomComs That Should Be Considered Classics

There are good and bad rom coms from the ’90s but for the most part, this is the decade that is considered the Golden Age of these types of movies. From a stripper who dates a wealthy man to a bride who always runs away at the altar at the last minute to be with the man she truly loves, many of these films star Julia Roberts and they hold a special place in many moviegoers’ hearts.

The romantic comedy genre is always going to be popular and there are always going to be new movies being made, even if some of the tropes and storylines can feel a bit passe at this point. Thankfully, it feels like there has been a newfound interest in the rom-com recently, with some seemingly coming out of nowhere. Whether they revitalize the genre or revisit the simple things that make romantic films so great in the first place, here are ten modern rom-coms that are destined to become classics.

10 To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

Adapted from the novel by Jenny Han, Netflix’s romantic comedy To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before stars an Asian-American actress, and it’s about time that the genre became more diverse.

In this movie, Lara Jean (Lara Condor) has to put out a lot of fires when her letters to her crushes are made public. The movie is sweet and has an old-fashioned quality to it and yet, it’s very contemporary and easily relatable for its young target audience.

9 Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Admittedly, rom-coms can be over-the-top but in Crazy Rich Asians, the story is so fabulous and the movie is so much fun to watch that the excess is almost the point. Based on the book of the same name by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians tells the love story of Rachel (Constance Wu) and Nick (Henry Golding). The twist is that Nick is actually the son of one of the richest families in the world.

While they’re a perfect couple, his mom has other ideas. Nick’s mother Elanor (Michelle Yeoh) demands the best for him, and she won’t allow him to marry a blue-collar lady like Rachel. Crazy Rich Asians needs to be considered a classic as it’s got style, romance, and a lot of unexpected moments. That, and it’s a monumental case for Asian American representation in the genre.

8 The Lovebirds (2020)

10 Recent RomComs That Should Be Considered Classics

Issae Rae and Kumail Nanjiani star as a couple going through a tough time in Lovebirds, which was released on Netflix in the summer of 2020. On the surface, Lovebirds doesn’t seem too odd for a rom-com but then, the shooting (literally) starts.

While on the brink of a breakup, Jibran and Leilani, get involved in a crazy situation when they see a murder take place right before their eyes. Besides discussing what makes an happy or unhappy relationship, Lovebirds also features a lot of exciting action, as the couple runs all over the city while trying to figure out what to do to stay alive. Lovebirds is a lot of fun and very sweet, too.

7 Plus One (2019)

10 Recent RomComs That Should Be Considered Classics

Plus One is a quiet movie about two friends, played by Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid, who agree to be each other’s wedding dates and then fall for each other.

The film takes the classic question of whether or not friends can truly stay pals or if their friendship eventually leads to romance. Plus One is essentially an updated When Harry Met Sally, which is one of the most popular rom coms ever made, and that comparison is meant in all the best ways possible.

6 Juliet, Naked (2018)

10 Recent RomComs That Should Be Considered Classics

Many of Nick Hornby’s novels have become great movies, like About A Boy or High Fidelity, and this 2018 adaptation is no exception. Juliet, Naked features a classic feature of a rom-com: the love triangle.

This time around it exists between Annie (Rose Byrne), her partner Duncan (Chris O’Dowd), and a famous singer Tucker (Ethan Hakwe). It’s a great movie about complicated relationships. What sets Juliet, Naked apart from most of the other entries here is that it’s a romance among middle-aged adults rather than teenagers or young adults, giving it a different kind of edge.

5 Love, Simon (2018)

10 Recent RomComs That Should Be Considered Classics

Based on the novel Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon follows Simon Spier (Nick Robinson), a young boy who’s still in the closet. Despite a general lack of confidence and his own self-doubt, Simon continues to writes letters to his love interest, Blue, and he can tell him everything that he’s feeling and thinking.

The movie deserves to be a classic as it’s inclusive and respectful. Simon slowly becomes more comfortable with being himself and coming out, and this is the kind of story that isn’t told often enough in the romantic comedy genre.

4 Let It Snow (2019)

10 Recent RomComs That Should Be Considered Classics

A romantic comedy set at Christmas is always going to be great, and this Netflix film — adapted from the book by genre figurehead John Green — Lauren Myracle, and Maureen Johnson, tells a few tales about teenagers stranded in a snowstorm.

Their plans for the holiday are changed by this natural occurrence, and Let It Snow does a good job of portraying how tough the teenage years are while also featuring a lot of cute love stories that can only happen during one’s adolescent days.

3 Palm Springs (2020)

10 Recent RomComs That Should Be Considered Classics

The quirky hit Palm Springs is about a time loop and although it was just released very recently, it has already gotten a lot of attention. Palm Sprins stars of unassumingly enough, as Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti have a classic romantic comedy meet-cute at a wedding, like what happens in so many films of this kind.

But then Palm Springs turns that idea on its head as they end up in a time loop, and the endless day gives the movie a really interesting way to reexamine and tell what’s an otherwise familiar tale of a Will they/Won’t they romance.

2 Isn’t It Romantic (2019)

10 Recent RomComs That Should Be Considered Classics

Isn’t It Romantic isn’t perfect, as its entire crux is a self-aware discussion of romantic comedy tropes and that deconstruction can often feel a little forced. Still, it deserves classic status as it calls out many of the genre’s outdated and questionable clichés.

Natalie (Rebel Wilson) swears that she’ll never get caught up in the kind of romance that these rom-com protagonists want and yet, of course, it happens to her as she wakes up in a generic rom-com movie where she’s the star. Even if does end up perpetuating what it claims to criticize, Isn’t It Romantic still has some smart things to say, and it’s a very interesting addition to a genre so reliant on formula.

1 The Big Sick (2017)

While there are countless dramas about a couple dealing with an illness, The Big Slick takes that idea and turns it on its head, as the couple in question are still figuring out where they stand with each other when Emily (Zoe Kazan) ends up in a coma.

It’s an incredibly smart movie that deals with everything from family dynamics to arranged marriages to breaking away from society’s mold. That, and The Big Sick is filled with hilarious lines and it definitely needs to be considered a classic romantic comedy.
