Next to his arboreal assistant, Rocket Raccoon is without a doubt the most distinct member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s not every day one finds a wise-cracking, machine-gun-toting, cybernetically-enhanced raccoon at the edges of space, and the MCU did a fantastic job bringing him to life, especially with his spitfire personality.

Both the writers and Bradley Cooper’s vocal performance help sell his quick wit, and here are ten lines and one-liners that prove it.

10 “That’s For When Things Get Really Hardcore. Or If You Wanna Blow up Moons” (Guardians of the Galaxy)

Rocket loves his guns or anything that makes a large explosion for that matter, and his Hadron Enforcer is no exception. The quote above perfectly illustrates both his zest for weapons and gives a brief description of the Hadron Enforcer’s primary function.

Of course, things undoubtedly get hardcore, and viewers get a full demonstration of the weapon’s power and it lives up to Rocket’s oh-so-accurate description.

9 “A Buncha Jackasses Standing in a Circle” (Guardians of the Galaxy)

This line is a prime example of Rocket’s brand of attitude. Even when called to put his life on the line and save the galaxy from the clutches of Ronan the Accuser, he still doesn’t miss the opportunity to make a sarcastic remark at his fellow Guardians.

This wouldn’t be the first time he’d use his specific brand of wit in this scenario. Have a look at the next entry for a more prominent example.

8 “Aw, What the Hell, I Don’t Got That Long a Lifespan Anyway…” (Guardians of the Galaxy)

This might seem like a throwaway joke, but don’t be fooled by Rocket’s casual candor. Normally, the raccoon is pretty gung-ho about facing danger, sometimes even nonchalant about it because he always has a plan of escape.

Considering this fact, maybe this was his way of covering up his lack of a way out? It’s anyone’s guess what goes on through this ringtail’s twisted head.

7 His “Peptalk” to Thor (Avengers: Endgame)

Whether in the comics or in the MCU, Rocket is pretty selective when it comes to whom he shares affections with, but this exchange with a very emotional god of thunder in Avengers: Endgame could be considered a prime example of tough love. Plus, only Rocket would have the gumption to straight-up slap a Norse god.

Not only does Rocket get Thor to go through with the mission, but reminds the audience that perhaps out of all the characters involved, he’s suffered the most.

6 “Oh, I’ll Get That Arm…” (Avengers: Infinity War)

This line is more of an Easter egg than anything else on this list, but it would be an absolute insult to leave it off, mainly due to its throwback-humor.

For those unfamiliar, this line calls back Rocket’s phony fetch quest for Quill when the Guardians were all gathered in the Kyln. It’s one thing to go after some hapless inmate’s leg, but the bionic arm of Bucky Barnes? Now that’s a prize.

5 His Bar Monologue (Guardians of the Galaxy)

Rocket is the picturesque definition of an ugly drunk, but in his alcohol-fueled rage-crying rant at the rest of the Guardians in the Knowhere bar serves as a brilliant but tragic way to deliver Rocket’s backstory.

Everything he delivers is comic accurate. He “didn’t ask to be taken apart and put back together over and over and over…” Rocket is the product of cruel experiments, and this creative use of exposition sells it in the most painful way.

4 “You’re Making Me Beat! Up! Grass!” (Guardians of the Galaxy)

On the subject of Rocket’s emotional outbursts, he absolutely hates to be beaten or proven wrong, and nowhere is that more physically present than when he takes his frustration out on a patch of greenery before going after Quill and Gamora with Drax and Groot.

Maybe this is catharsis, or maybe it’s his way of taking his anger out on Groot without getting totally pulverized by the walking splinter.

3 The “Taser-Face” Sequence (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2)

Easily one of the most hysterical moments in Guardians Vol. 2 was the exchange between Rocket and the mutinous Taser-Face. Just because the poor guy is tied to a chair without his weapons doesn’t mean he can’t let fly a few solid burns while facing certain death.

Needless to say, Taser-Face gets utterly obliterated, especially when his own crew joins in on Rocket’s act.

2 “I Live for the Simple Things… Like How Much This is Gonna Hurt.” (Guardians of the Galaxy)

At least Rocket is honest about his profession, and when that profession is bounty-hunting, a little honesty goes a long way. This is one of the prime instances of Rocket being Rocket.

The audience has only known the character a short time but with this one line, they soon learn all they need to know to start liking him. Comical, curt, and a smidge cruel, that’s Rocket in a nutshell.

1 “Ain’t Nothin’ Like Me, Cept’ Me.” (Guardians of the Galaxy)

There is no line, no mantra, no collection of one-liners or witty retorts that sums up a character quite like Rocket’s witty little phrase while being marched into the Kyln.

The MCU is loaded with guys in armored-suits, capes, and tight pants, but there’s only going to be one Rocket Raccoon. What else needs to be said other than “Well spoken, Trash Panda.”
