Dwayne Johnson has starred in a surprisingly large amount of films over the years, but despite his acting accomplishments, he will always be known by his fans as “The Rock,” his WWE ring name. For those who are a little late to the game, The Rock was regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time from 1996-2004, and even has a best-selling autobiography (The Rock Says…) to prove it. As successful as he was in the WWE, The Rock somehow managed to segue into Hollywood via The Scorpion King, a lead role for which he was paid $5.5 million, a world record for an actor in his first starring role. Somehow The Rock continues to succeed, no matter how many movie flops he has in his back pocket. Here are 10 roles of The Rock that everyone forgets about.

10 Walking Tall, 2004
Walking Tall was a 2004 remake of the 1973 film of the same name, starring The Rock and Johnny Knoxville. The Rock plays Chris Vaughn, a former U.S. Army Special Forces sergeant who returns to his hometown only to find that it has fallen into the hands of a crooked casino and its henchmen. Leave it to The Rock to bring some vigilante justice to small-town America (armed with a gigantic piece of lumber)!

9 Race To Witch Mountain, 2009
Back in 2009, The Rock appeared as the lead in the science fiction adventure thriller film Race To Witch Mountain, a live-action remake of the 1975 Disney film Escape To Witch Mountain (based on the 1968 book). If the name sounds familiar, it’s probably because this was Disney’s THIRD adaptation of the novel, the previous one being released in 1995. I guess The Rock was the secret sauce in his role as Jack Bruno, the ex-con cabbie who helps two alien teenagers get safely to their spaceship.
8 Gridiron Gang, 2006
Do you remember the 2006 sports drama film Gridiron Gang, based loosely upon the true story of the Kilpatrick Mustangs during the 1990 season? Yeah, most people don’t, but Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson starred in it as Sean Porter, the coach of a football team comprised of juvenile delinquents. Although The Rock definitely brings his larger than life physique and personality to the film, it maintains a 42% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Ouch.

7 The Rundown, 2003
The Rundown, known internationally as Welcome to the Jungle, was an action comedy film released in 2003 starring Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Christopher Walken, Rosario Dawson, and with a cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the film, The Rock plays a bounty hunter (surprise, surprise) who travels to Brazil to retrieve his employer’s son. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the film came in under budget at the box office, despite critics’ positive reviews.
6 Get Smart, 2008
For those who don’t remember, Dwayne Jonson played a hotshot CONTROL agent in Get Smart, a 2008 action/spy comedy based on Mel Brooks and Buck Henry’s TV series of the same name. The film had quite the ensemble cast, including Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin, and more. Steve Carrell plays the lead, Maxwell Smart, a clumsy man who idolizes Agent 23 (The Rock) and dreams of becoming a real, bad-ass field agent.

5 Southland Tales, 2006
Way back in 2006, The Rock starred in Southland Tales, a science fiction comedy-drama set in the then-near future of 2008. In the film, Dwayne plays Boxer Santaros, an action film actor stricken with amnesia. The storyline was intended to be a satiric commentary on the military-industrial complex and the “infotainment” industry, but the film bombed during its premiere at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. After significant edits, the final version premiered at the Fantastic Fest in 2007, but still only has a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. Sorry, The Rock.
4 Be Cool, 2005
Viewers might not remember the movie, but The Rock’s look in Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty, has been mercilessly memed over the years (and for good reason). The film is a crime-comedy adaptation of the 1999 novel of the same name and follows mobster Chili Palmer’s (John Travolta’s) entrance into the music industry. In the movie, The Rock plays Elliot Wilhelm, the gay Samoan bodyguard and aspiring actor who enjoys country music and super-tight blue pants.

3 Planet 51, 2009
Dwayne Johnson once voiced a NASA astronaut stuck on an alien planet in Planet 51, a Spanish-British-American 3D computer animated sci/fi comedy that got lost in the sands of time. Dwayne wasn’t the only big name to do voice work in the movie, however; other participating actors included Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and Gary Oldman. Despite being the most expensive film ever produced in Spain, the film was considered a failure by both critics and the box office. Whomp, whomp.
2 Tooth Fairy, 2010
Yep, there’s a good reason why most Americans have chosen to block the above image from their memories. In 2010, The Rock agreed to play the titular character in Tooth Fairy, a family comedy that also starred Stephen Merchant, Ashley Judd, and Julie Andrews. In the film, Derek Thompson (Dwayne Johnson) is a minor league hockey player nicknamed “The Tooth Fairy,” due to his tendency to knock out his opponents’ teeth. After he tells his girlfriend’s (Ashley Judd’s) daughter that the tooth fairy isn’t real, Derek sprouts wings and… well, you get the idea.
1 The Scorpion King, 2002
The Rock had his first starring role in The Scorpion King, the 2002 prequel to The Mummy franchise. The film tells the story of Mathayus (Johnson) and his rise to become the Scorpion King. Dwayne scored this role after a very brief role as Mathayus in The Mummy 2. Unfortunately, The Rock’s early acting skills left a lot to be desired, and the film was trashed by critics and audiences alike. It’s okay, he still looked awesome.
