RPGs are a beloved genre in the gaming industry simply due to how immersive many beloved titles can be. In a world where gamers are tried and tested by the trials and tribulations of reality, sometimes it’s fun to step into the shoes of someone completely new. That might mean a number of things for different players, but one thing they all desire is a certain level of freedom.

Any of the best RPG games worth playing deserves some form of liberation with its characters, its quests, and its world. Seasoned players will know if anything is lacking. The deeper the game, the more immersive the experience.

Divinity: Original Sin II

Although it’s the most linear game on this list, Divinity: Original Sin II has a phenomenally large deal of content to offer its players. From character creation to environmental world-building, there is simply a buffet of material for adventurers to sink their teeth into.

There is simply so much to customize and play within this grand fantasy epic that it opens the door for tons of replay value. The exploration might not be as large as other titles, but there’s no denying the satisfactory quality in this glorious adventure.

The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

While some debate that the iconic Nintendo Switch title shouldn’t technically count as an RPG, those who have spent countless hours riding through the lands of Hyrule will say otherwise. Breath of the Wild is an awe-inspiring title in the Zelda timeline that grants the player an entire kingdom to explore. Loaded with loot, weapons, and various ways to win the game, the only limit players have is physics.

Choice is the name of the game in this incarnation of Hyrule. While it might not be the smartest idea to go after Ganon with a wooden spoon and a pair of shorts, that doesn’t mean it’s not an option. Go in bare-bones or armed to the teeth, it’s all left to the player’s discretion.

Fable

Fable is one of those games that comes with a particular reputation. In its heyday, it was one of the most ambitious games in the RPG genre, focusing on the power of choice, morality, and other abstracts that helped unfold the player’s story. Needless to say, it was a lot of power to fork over to the player like that.

Play it as a hero or a villain, a benevolent figure or a terrible tyrant, it’s all up to the player’s moral compass. While its fantasy elements and story might seem fairly standard compared to some modern games, it’s still a piece of RPG history every fan of the genre should enjoy.

Dragon’s Dogma

Capcom’s epic fantasy, Dragon’s Dogma, a game that also has a Netflix show, might take a lot of commonplace tropes from other works of the genre, it allows for the player to essentially carve their own path on the quest to retrieve their heart from an evil dragon. Players essentially embark on their own hero’s journey, but they’re allowed to create their place in this incredible world.

Customization is absolutely incredible in this epic, and that’s not the only thing adventurers can toy with. So many winding paths and side quests and so little time, it’s a feat just to try and do it all.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a different breed of game because, while it offers freedom of direction and choice, it does have a set story to tell. Granted, how that story is told is completely up to the player’s discretion. Henry will rise from the ashes from blacksmith’s apprentice to warrior, but that depends on the gamer.

The game is very story and dialogue-focused and the action and combat are used sparingly, but there’s so much deep lore and ways to experience this medieval narrative that it’s nearly impossible to experience every single outcome.

Stardew Valley

Sometimes players want to fight for the crown, other times they just want to sit back, take it easy, and heard a group of 16-bit cows. Stardew Valley is one RPG that will have players growing and resting on their laurels. The object of the game is simple, raise a farm and explore a virtual community, but that’s just the core structure of it all.

If variety is the spice of life, Stardew Valley is a very well-seasoned game. Along with farming and harvesting, players can explore dungeons full of monsters, forage different flora and fauna, and even take a simple fishing trip. In the end, it’s all about how much players want to invest in their virtual selves.

Dragon Age Series

Bioware is a pro when it comes to creating immersive RPGs, and their Dragon Age series has a lot to offer in terms of roleplaying and immersion. Known for the various dialogue trees, branching pathways, and ways to play, this incredibly deep fantasy series has captivated many and eaten dozens of hours of playtime.

Inquisition might be the most polished and grandiose, but it’s arguably the Dragon Age game that gamers should play first, and responsible for giving the series its characters, identity, and ways to play. With so many choices to twist and turn the player’s adventure, one can’t help but get sucked in.

The Witcher III

There’s a reason there are so many memes involving the number of various sidequests available in The Witcher III, it’s funny because it’s true. Players can’t help but pursue various species of enormous monsters to battle, but there’s more to the saga of Geralt than meets the eye.

The question is what kind of slayer do gamers want to be. They might want to get paid for the harrowing quests they want to pursue, do it out of the goodness of their hearts, or something else altogether. They must decide whether to pursue Ciri, seek out the love of Yenifer, or go toe-to-toe directly with The Wild Hunt, only Geralt knows.

Kingdoms Of Amalur

It’s one thing to be offered a wide array of choices to affect one’s RPG experience, but it’s another to offer the same array of choices on the fly and ready to be changed at will. If gamers don’t like the hand they’re dealt, all they have to do is change the deck.

Amalur is like what would happen if Skyrim and World of Warcraft had a baby. There are loads of quests and sidequests to undertake, but so many more ways to play them out. It’s the class system that truly wins this game a spot on the list, as players have the opinion of rewriting their fates at any time. Jumping from fighter to mage to rogue to any other class a player can imagine is as easy as accessing the pause menu. There’s nothing like the freedom of choice.

Skyrim

A great deal has already been said about Bethesda’s deep and immersive RPG, Skyrim, not to mention how one should play it the first time, but there’s no denying the perks and advantages it has to offer players truly seeking a world away from their own. What makes the game so successful and so liberating is that it essentially lets the player go off on their own after completing the tutorial.

If they choose to continue the story quest, it’s of their own volition. It’s always there, but it’s never mandatory. This leaves so much room for exploration, roleplaying, and discovery. Honestly, it’s no wonder the game has still been played, replayed, and rereleased for over a decade.
