Older animated films had a penchant for unintentionally eliciting terror, and these 10 flicks had kids the world over sleeping with the lights on.

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

Kids’ movies are not supposed to be scary, especially not animated movies for younger children. They may have their scary moments—has anyone got over the scene in Toy Story when neighbor Sid tried to blow up Buzz with a firework?—but they are few and far between on their way towards what is usually a happy ending.

Some cartoons are definitely not meant for kids and can be terrifying, especially some Japanese anime movies, but, amazingly, the scary animated movies on this list were all created to be watched by children, and to give them nightmares for weeks!

10 Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

It might seem strange to see Scooby-Doo on a list of scary animated movies given that the TV cartoons are not in the least bit frightening. Scooby-Doo villains may seem at first glance to be supernatural ghosts and swamp monsters, but they are always revealed to be a very human villain in a costume.

Not in the 1998 feature-length movie Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, however, when the gang found themselves up against real flesh-eating zombies. A rather dark turn for the normally light-hearted adventures of Mystery Incorporated.

9 The Nightmare Before Christmas

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

Some would argue that Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is not really a children’s movie. However, it was only rated a PG, and there is plenty for older kids to enjoy in the adventures of Pumpkin King Jack Skellington as he discovers the joys of Christmas. Jack himself is not so scary, though there are other characters, most notably the faceless Oogie Boogie, who could easily be the stuff of nightmares, while the opening song celebrating Halloween is about as spooky as it gets.

8 Watership Down

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

A cartoon about a group of fluffy bunny rabbits with the beautiful song “Bright Eyes” as its theme tune—surely nothing could be more family-friendly than Watership Down?

Well, as anyone who has ever seen the movie or read the original novel by Richard Adams, Watership Down is one long moment of terror from start to finish. Whether Fiver and Hazel are being chased by dogs, swept away by rivers, or even being attacked by other brainwashed bunnies, most children and even some adults will find themselves traumatized by this animated atrocity.

7 The Plague Dogs

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

Also based on a novel by Richard Adams, The Plague Dogs is not as well known as Watership Down, but it is perhaps even more terrifying. The dogs in the movie’s title are Rowf and Snitter, who have escaped from the traumas of a scientific laboratory where they were being experimented on.

The canine heroes find themselves chased down by their former captors, and the army and the media even get involved, and the final scenes of the tear-jerking movie leave it up to the viewer to decide if the pooches made it to safety or not.

6 Fantasia

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

Disney is not exactly renowned for their horror movies despite the various evil queens over the years and the heart-breaking moment when Bambi’s mother was shot by a hunter. However, their first feature-length movie Fantasia has more than a few moments that younger kids should avoid.

The section set to the music from Night on Bald Mountain features demons, witches, vampires, and gargoyles all celebrating the darkness until they find themselves driven off by dawn and Ave Maria. Even The Sorcerer’s Apprentice section featuring Mickey Mouse has a chilling moment when the splinters of the bewitched broom all start to flicker into life.

5 Monster House

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

Monster House is probably the closest to an actual horror movie for kids, albeit a rather tame animated horror movie. Nevertheless, there are some genuinely scary moments in this 2006 movie about a creepy house that comes to life, and which even starts to eat people from the neighborhood.

Older kids can probably watch and enjoy the entertaining movie without too many issues, but children who are just at that age where they’re starting to sleep without the night light could easily find themselves back at square one…

4 The Black Cauldron

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

Another Disney movie that is way scarier than many parents might expect is the 1985 animation The Black Cauldron. Based on medieval legends from the UK, it was the first Disney movie to get a PG certificate, rather than the usual G.

Medieval legends are not exactly renowned for their family-friendly subject matter, and the same went for The Black Cauldron, which had more violence and evil red-eyed skeletons than parents and kids were probably expecting when they lined up to see the movie at the multiplex.

3 Spirited Away

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

Anime has always been in a different category than western animations, and Japanese children think nothing of seeing supernatural beings and even some violent scenes in their cartoons. One of anime’s biggest hits in the West was Spirited Away, a story about a young girl who finds herself trapped in a mystical world where her parents have been turned into pigs and her only help comes from a silent spirit called No-Face. There are some truly disturbing moments in Spirited Away, not least the scenes with the fearsome, fire-breathing, giant-headed Yubaba.

2 The Secret of NIMH

10 Scariest Animated Kids Movies

Who would have guessed that there were two animated kids’ movies about animal escapees from scientific laboratories? In The Secret of NIMH, which like The Plague Dogs was based on an earlier novel, the animals involved are rats, who have to escape when they find out that their institute is going to kill them all off. 1980s kids grew up with a dread of The Secret of NIMH which survived until adulthood, even though there is nothing as outright scary in this movie as in some of the others on this list.

1 Coraline

Coraline is one of those rare animated movies, in that it manages to frighten both kids and adults alike with its creepy storyline about parallel worlds and an “Other Mother” with soulless button eyes who switches from kindness to cruelty when she doesn’t get her way.

The 2009 stop motion animation should come with a health warning for younger kids who will never look at a needle and thread the same way again. The movie even follows some of the classic horror movie tropes that grown-up viewers will recognize and recoil from in terror!
