10 Scariest Quests In The Batman Arkham Games

The Batman: Arkham franchise is known for its impactful action set-pieces, with Batman traversing maps to fights thugs and supervillains alike. However, the developers of the series understand the horrific nature of Batman’s villain roster, thus leading to scarier encounters throughout the games.

These encounters range from side missions to major parts of the main story, with a wide variety of villains to provide unique experiences with different types of horror. These terrifying quests have to be actual missions, so jumpscare cameos such as Killer Croc in Batman: Arkham City will not be entries.

10 Friend In Need – Arkham Knight

The use of build-up and deception helps in this side mission. Upon entering Wayne Tower, Batman enters the elevator, but upon reaching the top floor, he’s now in Bruce Wayne attire. As Bruce Wayne, the player is led to a surprise where Bruce attacks the always loyal Lucius Fox, then uses him to access the Wayne computer.

As a twist, it turns out to be Hush AKA Tommy Elliot holding Fox hostage. Considering Batman: Arkham Knight was not afraid to kill off-side characters, there is genuine tension that Lucius Fox could die. This, combined with a well-executed reveal that Batman is Bruce Wayne, makes for a quick but suspenseful side-mission.

9 Beneath The Surface – Arkham Knight

Killer Croc makes a creepy return in Batman: Arkham Knight. The prison airship Iron Heights has crashed in Gotham Harbor, making it partially flooded. For the first five to ten minutes of the mission, Killer Croc is kept hidden, with players seeing only the subtle visuals of waves movies or a dead body being pulled underwater.

Finally, Croc appears with a jumpscare to kidnap the warden. The horror doesn’t stop with Killer Croc, however; as the player goes through Iron Heights, it is revealed that the warden performed horrific experiments on Croc and the prisoners to create biological weapons. This turns the warden into the true villain of the story, with Croc being more sympathetic.

8 Meet The Hatter – Arkham Origins

The thugs singing a song to Batman inviting him to the Hat Shop is creepy enough, but upon meeting the Mad Hatter, Batman is taken to Wonderland. Though imaginative and fantastical in design, Wonderland is given an ominous tone with dark and gritty detailing throughout.

Along with Hatter’s creepy voice haunting the player, Batman’s first encounter as he tries to save a woman from becoming Alice is nothing short of weird and frightening, which fits the original Alice In Wonderland story. Peter McNicol as The Mad Hatter makes for one of many stand-out celebrity performances in the Arkham games.

7 Hallucination Assassination – Arkham Origins

10 Scariest Quests In The Batman Arkham Games

At first, Batman’s encounter with Copperhead seems like a standard affair for the Dark Knight. Copperhead infects Batman with her neurotoxin to slowly kill him, and now Batman has to get to the rooftop to get a cure before he dies. Fans have seen Batman go through this many times in the past.

That all changes when the toxin causes Batman to hallucinate while seeing Copperhead’s shadow at the corner of his eyes. One of the scariest parts is when he sees the corpse of a woman Joker killed earlier in the story talking to him through a permanent smile.

6 Identity Theft – Arkham City

10 Scariest Quests In The Batman Arkham Games

The horror in this investigation side mission comes from the mystery and what the game doesn’t show the player. Batman finds dead bodies across Arkham City with their heads wrapped in bandages. With each body, Batman describes different things, such as the fact that the killer cuts off the victim’s face while they are still alive thanks to powerful anesthetics.

When clues such as Bruce Wayne’s fingerprints and the description that the killer even looks like Bruce Wayne come up, this mission creates uneasiness and confusion. The ending is just icing on the cake, with the reveal that Bruce’s once-friend Thomas Elliot has created a nearly perfect replica of Bruce Wayne’s face using pieces from the different bodies.

5 Killer Croc’s Lair – Arkham Asylum

10 Scariest Quests In The Batman Arkham Games

To get the spores that can combat Joker’s Titan formula, Batman must traverse the maze that is Killer Croc’s lair in the sewers of Arkham Island. The entire time, Killer Croc stalks Batman from below as Batman quietly moves across floating platforms.

The horror comes from the suspense, the idea that Killer Croc could jump up at any second, and the player has to be quick with Batman’s gadgets including the Batarang to hit Killer Croc’s shock collar. Sadly, this mission is not nearly as scary after the first playthrough, but still remains a creepy and tension-filled encounter.

4 The Perfect Crime – Arkham Knight

10 Scariest Quests In The Batman Arkham Games

Disturbing is the best way to describe this mission in which Batman solves another slew of murders across Gotham, each victim possessing unique attributes. Reminiscent of a killer from a Hannibal Lecter story, it turns out to be Professor Pyg trying to create what he considers perfect beings.

Using twisted surgeries, Pyg removes the ability to feel pain or any individuality from his many victims to make them into what are known as Dollotrons. In a way, they are akin to zombies that serve Pyg blindly, and anything that is too broken in his eyes is discarded. From Pyg’s haunting operatic singing to fighting the innocent people turned into Dollotrons, everything about this quest is skin-crawling.

3 Farewell, Joker – Arkham Knight

10 Scariest Quests In The Batman Arkham Games

Being a ghost in Batman’s brain, Joker gets a taste of his own medicine once Scarecrow injects Batman’s body with fear toxin after Joker takes control. The result is a first-person sequence in which Batman torments Joker with the truth: that Joker is afraid of being forgotten.

The eery Gothic scenery combined with relentless changes to the environment along with jumpscares from Batman statues leads to one of the most iconic missions of Batman: Arkham Knight. It all leads to an epic but frightening finale featuring Kevin Conroy’s iconic version of the “I’m Batman” line. It helps in showcasing why the criminal world is so terrified of Batman.

2 Creature Of The Night – Arkham Knight

10 Scariest Quests In The Batman Arkham Games

It all starts with the now-infamous jumpscare. As the player is traversing Miagani Island in Batman: Arkham Knight, they will randomly encounter Man-Bat, who screeches right at the camera before flying off. From there, Batman discovers the truth of Dr. Kirk Langstrom, who transformed into Man-Bat.

In Kirk Langstrom’s lab, Batman finds footage of Kirk’s experiment that led to his transformation and murdering his own wife. It is stylized to look similar to a found footage horror film and provides a tragic angle to Man-Bat. In one of the hardest Easter Eggs to find, Man-Bat can escape for another jumpscare if the player returns to the game on October 31st.

1 First Scarecrow Encounter – Arkham Asylum

If any villain is going to provide horror, it’s Scarecrow; and the first encounter with him in Batman: Arkham Asylum is straight out of a horror film. After discovering what appears to be the dead body of Jim Gordon, Batman’s perspective is distorted with the visuals of bugs crawling all over the floors and walls.

There are three body bags inside the examination room. Inside the first two are ghostly corpses of Thomas and Martha Wayne who taunt Batman. The final bag provides a creepy jumpscare from Scarecrow, which leads to a tense and puzzling encounter with Scarecrow in his nightmare realm.
