The trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness revealed that Scarlet Witch will be returning for the movie. Wanda has gone through a lot of changes in the MCU as of late, most of them stemming from the events of Wandavision. Given the magnitude of the threat in Multiverse of Madness, it’s probably good that Strange has the help of someone capable of warping reality itself.

Scarlet Witch first appeared in X-Men #4 in 1964, so she has a long and storied history in the Marvel Universe. Most of her tales involve the Avengers, as she was with the team for a long time. There is plenty of reading to do before Multiverse of Madness comes out.

10 Vision And Scarlet Witch Has The Couple On Their Own Journey

There were two series called Vision and the Scarlet Witch. The first was a four-issue miniseries by Bill Mantlo and Rick Leonardi. These were a series of one-off stories with villains such as Ultron and the Grim Reaper. However, the fourth issue has the shocking revelation that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are the children of Magneto.

The second Vision and the Scarlet Witch was a 12-issue series by Steve Englehart and Richard Howell with an issue co-written by Ann Nocenti. This story also followed the couple’s adventures with different enemies from issue to issue but with a more overarching tale. It reached its climax with the marriage of Wanda and Vision as well as Wanda conjuring her two children, Tommy and Billy.

Scarlet Witch Vol 1 by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, and John Higgins was the first solo series for Wanda Maximoff. It was a four-issue miniseries where Wanda has to fight the likes of Master Pandemonium and Lore.

This story takes place soon after Wanda discovers that she is a “nexus” being of great importance to the balance of the universe. Master Pandemonium and a necromancer named Lore, who is also a nexus being, try to conquer the Scarlet Witch. Master Pandemonium claims to be in love with her while Lore wants to destroy the Scarlet Witch and consume the world.

7 Avengers: Disassembled Is A Foundational Modern Marvel Text

Avengers: Disassembled by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch is a very controversial text, but it is a foundational story of the modern Marvel Universe. The events of this story and the ones that followed shaped the Avengers and X-Men into what they are today.

A mysterious enemy is attacking the Avengers and striking at their weak points. It starts with the death of Ant-Man and continues through a She-Hulk rampage, the destruction of Vision, and the death of Hawkeye. House of M by Bendis and Olivier Coipel follows up on Avengers: Disassembled in a new world where mutants are the dominant species and humans are hunted by mutant and Sentinel alike. The revered House of M, consisting of Magneto, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver, rule North America.

Scarlet Witch had the power to do this, but someone would have had to convince her to go through with it. Magneto is the obvious suspect, but the truth of it all is far more nefarious. It all ends with three infamous words: “No more mutants.”

5 Uncanny Avengers Shows Wanda’s Triumphant Return To The Avengers

After the events of House of M, Wanda was off the Avengers for quite some time. However, she returned years later after the events of Avengers vs. X-Men with the advent of the Avengers Unity Division in Uncanny Avengers by Rick Remender and John Cassaday. The goal of this new Avengers team was to extend an olive branch to the mutant community by making the Avengers team a split of Avengers and X-Men.

The initial team consisted of Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, Rogue, Sunfire, Thor, and Havok with the Wasp and Wonder Man joining not too long afterward. The series would reboot under Rick Remender and Daniel Acuna, where it would be revealed that Wanda and Pietro were not the children of Magneto, and their powers originated with the High Evolutionary.

4 Scarlet Witch Was Wanda’s First Ongoing Series

Creators James Robinson and Vanesa Del Rey would give Scarlet Witch her own solo ongoing series in late 2015. This series would follow Wanda as she travels the world and explores the places where magic is at its strongest. It’s a journey of self-discovery of sorts.

One of the most significant occurrences in the series is a confrontation between Wanda and Quicksilver in Scarlet Witch #9 by James Robinson and Joelle Jones. Wanda would be disappointed by her brother making the same mistakes again and again, with the two having a falling out over this. Unfortunately, the series would end with Scarlet Witch #15.

3 X-Men: Trial Of Magneto Has Wanda Making Amends With Mutant Kind

The events of House of M would make Wanda a pariah in the mutant community. Despite that, she would visit the Hellfire Gala after the advent of the mutant nation of Krakoa. She would have a touching reunion with Magneto where he would reaffirm that he considers Wanda a daughter despite the High Evolutionary’s revelations.

Wanda would be seemingly murdered on Krakoa with Magneto as the prime suspect. However, all of this was part of a long-term plan by Wanda and Magneto to allow the Scarlet Witch to perform a ritual to essentially create a mutant afterlife that could be accessed through the Krakoan Revival Protocols. This made things right between Wanda and the mutant world at last.

2 Avengers: The Children’s Crusade Has Wanda Reconnecting With Her Sons

Billy and Tommy Maximoff would be reincarnated as Wiccan and Speed of the Young Avengers. After a few years, Wiccan’s powers began to misbehave, and the Young Avengers sought out Scarlet Witch for answers in the Children’s Crusade story by Allen Heinberg and Jim Cheung. Unfortunately, Wanda had been brainwashed by Doctor Doom to become his bride.

The Young Avengers, the Avengers, and even the X-Men would come together to help free Wanda from Doom’s thrall. The adventure would see the return of Ant-Man and a tragic death among the Young Avengers.

1 Avengers: Nights Of Wundagore Is A Scarlet Witch Classic

Avengers: Nights of Wundagore is a classic tale from Avengers #181-187 by David Michelinie, Mark Gruenwald, Steven Grant, and John Byrne. It’s in this story that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver first learn of their history with Wundagore Mountain and its inhabitant, the High Evolutionary.

The chaos god Chthon and the sorcerer Modred would make a bid to possess the Scarlet Witch and abuse her power, and the Avengers would have to come together to save one of their own.
