The shutdown left many showrunners and writers scrambling to figure out what to do with their shows when production started back up again.

And while some shows have chosen to pretend that COVID-19 doesn’t exist, other shows have tackled the pandemic head-on creating specials and episodes dedicated solely to the pandemic. ABC’s hit sitcom Black-ish tackled the pandemic head-on when the family sitcom returned for its seventh season in the fall. Given the fact that matriarch Dr. Rainbow Johnson works at a hospital, the choice seemed to be a no brainer for the writers.

The season has tackled it all from the rise and fall of praise for front-line workers to dating in the pandemic. The Conners is another hit family sitcom that welcomed the world of the pandemic into its third season. While the family is regularly shown wearing masks when they are outside of the house, the effects of COVID on them are felt more financially than socially.

Instead of focusing on the medical side of things, The Conners instead showcases the harsh realities many working-class Americans are facing as they are forced to work through a pandemic or, even worse, have to deal with the aftermath of being fired or laid off.

The Doctors at Seattle Grace have seen a lot of heartbreaking tragedies over the years but nothing could have prepared them for the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, Grey’s Anatomy tackled the pandemic in its own uniquely melodramatic way.

Not only were the team of doctors swamped with cases, but the season 17 premiere also revealed that Meredith had also contracted the virus leaving her hospitalized as her coworkers debated how to properly treat her. Adding to the drama was the fact that Meredith, in her medicated state, had a vision of the late Derek Shepherd.

The miniseries is unique because it followed an ensemble cast of fictionalized individuals whose actors were actually quarantining together in real life. The series follows three different groups as they navigate life and love in the “new normal.” While these stories seemed to be disjointed from one another, it’s revealed in the end that each one of these characters is intertwined with each other in some way.

Station 19’s view of the pandemic is a bit different though since the series centers on a team of firefighters. In addition, the first responders’ personal lives have been upended thanks to the pandemic.

2 Superstore

Perhaps the most entertaining portrayal of the COVID-19 pandemic on television comes from the NBC workplace sitcom Superstore. The beloved series kicked off its sixth season with a pandemic centered episode where the Cloud 9 employees are praised for being “heroes” by their corporate bosses who have failed to provide proper PPE. As if working through the pandemic isn’t hard enough, the team is also dealing with rude customers and the reality that their manager Amy is gearing up to move.

While Superstore does showcase the COVID-19 pandemic through the eyes of front-line workers, it did drop the ball in a few places especially when it came to proper mask-wearing. While the team regularly wears masks on the floor, they are often seen without their masks on when they’re not around customers.

1 This Is Us

The team behind NBC’s hit drama series This Is Us is known for their tight writing and detailed character arcs so many fans were surprised to see how easily the writers were able to weave the pandemic into the current timeline.

The season five premiere picked up right where season four left off but still managed to introduce the pandemic without affecting its previous story. While COVID isn’t a major factor in the series, it has complicated the Pearson Family’s lives in different ways.
