Amazon Prime, STARZ, and Netflix are among the powerhouses that are producing fantastic historical fiction shows, some of which are even inspired by real historical families, (like Medici the Magnificent), historical events, as seen in Outlander, and places, like Jamestown. Here is a look at 10 historical fiction shows that audiences should feast their eyes upon and where to binge-watch them.
10 Amazon Prime: Poldark
MASTERPIECE and BBC’s Poldark is a historical fiction romance that boasts five seasons. It tells the story of a post-American Revolutionary War redcoat as he returns to his home in Cornwall and finds his lover about to marry someone else.
Aidan Turner plays the former redcoat captain, Ross Poldark, and Eleanor Tomlinson plays the red-headed Demelza in this action-packed, fiery romance. This 2015 version of Poldark is based on an older MASTERPIECE classic and can be found on Amazon Prime.
9 STARZ: Black Sails
STARZ’s original Black Sails is a prequel to the classic historical fiction novel, Treasure Island, written by Robert Louis Stevenson. In the four seasons of this show, the creators worked to tell the tale that precedes “Treasure Island” in a way that is tasteful and true to the book, while also taking creative liberties.
Lovers of a good pirate’s tale or even Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean will be saying “Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me,” alongside some of this show’s protagonists.
8 Netflix: Medici The Magnificent
Netflix’s Medici the Magnificent follows Florence’s historical Medici family, as they work to build a bank and rise to power. With the third season just released on Netflix, this show is an apt binge-watch for audiences that thrive off of historical political powers, especially where money seems to rule.
There are also cameos by historical figures other than the de Medici family, such as Michelangelo and Leonardo DaVinci.
7 STARZ: Outlander
STARZ’s Outlander is based on the historical fiction book series by Diana Gabaldon and follows a 1940’s English woman who accidentally travels through time while on a trip to Scotland with her husband.
Throughout the five seasons released so far, famous historical figures have made cameos in this show, such as Bonnie Prince Charlie and George Washington.
6 Amazon Prime: Jamestown
Amazon Prime’s very own Jamestown details the lives of the settlers at this historical settlement.
The show particularly follows the women who sailed across oceans to marry the settlers and establish familial roots in the new territory, as well as their influence in the patriarchal society.
5 STARZ: The White Queen
The STARZ original, The White Queen, is a miniseries based on the book by Philippa Gregory. The show follows the Wars of Roses between the house of Lancaster and the house of York. Political rebellions, loosened familial ties, and the golden crown of England all dangle in the midst of this war.
The White Princess is the miniseries that follows The White Queen and it can also be streamed on STARZ.
4 Netflix: The Last Kingdom
Netflix’s The Last Kingdom follows the quest for vengeance as a boy seeks to avenge his father’s death at the hands of the Vikings.
Alongside this, the boy is raised with the Vikings but is conflicted when he comes of age and seeks to claim the life he was born with, which includes a kingdom that opposes the Vikings.
3 STARZ: The White Princess
The STARZ original, The White Princess, is a miniseries based on the book by Philippa Gregory. This miniseries follows after the generation The White Queen, with the protagonist of the show being Elizabeth Woodville’s daughter, Elizabeth of York (or Lizzie).
The Spanish Princess follows the generation after this miniseries, in which Elizabeth of York’s son is set to ascend to the English throne.
2 Netflix: Frontier
Netflix’s Frontier is a show that focuses on the 1700s fur trade with the Hudson Bay Company in Canada.
This show is Certified Fresh with a Rotton Tomatoes score of 75 percent and an 82 percent audience rating. Frontier boasts three seasons and stars Game of Thrones’ and Aquaman’s Jason Mamoa.
1 STARZ: The Spanish Princess
The STARZ original, The Spanish Princess, is a miniseries based on the book by Philippa Gregory, which is categorized at historical biographical fiction. This means that while the series is centered around a real-life historical figure (Katherine of Aragon), the narrative takes creative liberties.
The Spanish Princess has also been renewed for another season, which is assumed to follow King Henry VIII’s ascension to the throne, and the story of his first wife, Katherine of Aragon.
