10 Shows To Watch If You Liked Invincible

Adapted from the Image Comics series of the same name penned by Robert Kirkman, Invincible made its debut to critical acclaim earlier in March 2021. Finishing up its eight-episode first season on April 29th, the fast-paced superhero drama has already been renewed for both a second and a third season. The story follows Mark Grayson, aka Invincible, as he discovers his powers and what it means to be a hero.

Like The Boys, the series was notable for some of the most realistically depicted superhero fights ever shown on television – showcasing the brutality that such powerful beings could really bring upon themselves and those around them. Production can often take more time than fans are willing to wait for, but these shows, in particular, should help to tide over any Invincible fan for a good while.

10 Justice League (2001) & Justice League Unlimited – Classic Superhero Action At Its Finest

10 Shows To Watch If You Liked Invincible

Perhaps one of the most iconic superhero shows of the early 2000s, Justice League & Justice League Unlimited were the final shows set in DC’s Animated Universe. The original series featured a team composed of Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Martian Manhunter, The Flash (Wally West), Green Lantern (John Stewart), and Hawkgirl (Shayera Hol). JLU expanded its roster – despite production setbacks that restricted certain heroes and villains from being featured in the series.

While the show is nowhere near as graphic as Invincible, JL & JLU still stand as some of the most action-packed superhero shows of all time. Furthermore, while most of its episodes are stand-alone stories – there are plenty of overarching plots that run the length of the entire series. Both series are currently available on HBO Max.

9 The Walking Dead – The Zombie Apocalypse But Humans Are The Real Monsters

10 Shows To Watch If You Liked Invincible

Like Invincible, The Walking Dead is a show based on another one of Robert Kirkman’s original comics. Largely following former sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes, the series explores morality and the human condition in a world that completely disregards them. Characters are pitted against both the flesh-eating hordes of zombies and other groups of humans struggling to find their place in the new world order.

Though it’s not an animated show, The Walking Dead has plenty of things Invincible fans love: gore, heartfelt character moments, and gruesome action (for the most part). Fair warning, however, death is a much more common occurrence in TWD’s universe. First premiering in 2010, 9 out of its 10 produced seasons are currently available on Netflix.

8 Castlevania – A Phenomenal Adaptation Of The Classic Game Franchise

10 Shows To Watch If You Liked Invincible

A Netflix original, Castlevania is based on the video game series of the same name. The series largely follows the adventures of Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belandes, and Alucard Tepes on their quest to repel Dracula’s army of vampires and hellish night creatures following the death of Lisa Tepes, his wife. Later seasons also introduced other popular characters from the video games including Carmilla, Hector, & Isaac.

Famous for its highly stylized violence, gory depiction of death, and impressive animation, Castlevania takes the inherent darkness of the series it was based on even further. Complete with instances of horror, fantastic character designs, and (mostly) cohesive character arcs, Castlevania is perfect for any fans of vampires and lots and lots of blood. All four seasons are available on Netflix, and a spin-off series is currently in development.

7 Harley Quinn (2019) – The Perfect On-Screen Representation Of The Titular Character

Starring its titular character as she attempts to make a name for herself in the criminal underground outside of the Joker’s shadow, Harley Quinn is perhaps one of the most accurate translations of comic characters to screen. It knows not to take itself too seriously, exaggerating some of its characters and introducing plot lines that are equal parts comical and serious.

Featuring impressive voice-over performances by Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Diedrich Bader, and James Adomian (playing a hilarious Dark Knight-inspired version of Bane), the series also features fun action sequences, hilarious dialogue, and plenty of blood and character development to keep even the most casual viewers invested.

6 Blood of Zeus (Gods & Heroes) – Greek Mythology Never Looked This Cool

10 Shows To Watch If You Liked Invincible

As its name suggests, Blood of Zeus is based on Greek Mythology and sets itself in an ancient time period. Heron, a character specifically created for the show itself, serves as the series protagonist and discovers his demi-godhood during his quest to save Earth and Olympus. The story is set up as something that was “lost to history,” but considering how many children Zeus fathered, it makes it all the more believable.

Like most other shows on this list, the show features sleek action sequences that are balanced by an equally impressive voice cast. Furthermore, the story explores the relationship between power, corruption, and anger, outlining how they work off each other and overwhelm individuals.

5 The Legend of Korra – The Stellar Sequel To The Cartoon Of A Generation

The sequel series to the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender series, The Legend of Korra is set 70 years after the final season of ATLA. The Avatar has been reincarnated as Korra, an initially hot-headed and spiritually disconnected member of the Southern Water Tribe. The series helps expand and flesh out the franchise’s mythology and is considered a groundbreaking staple of children’s animation, storytelling, and LGBTQIA+ representation.

While there’s certainly no excessive amounts of gore present (considering it initially aired on Nickelodeon), its fight scene choreography and style are on par with many adult-oriented animated series. The show notably transcends age limitations and demographics due in part to its complex storylines and themes. Along with the original series, TLOK is entirely available on Netflix.

4 B: The Beginning & B: The Succession – A Thrilling Cat-And-Mouse Chase Of Detective And Killer

10 Shows To Watch If You Liked Invincible

First released in 2018, B: The Beginning is an original net animation and anime series created by Kazuto Nakazawa – most famously known for directing the anime sequence in Kill Bill: Volume 1. Set in a technologically advanced fantasy world, the story follows detective Keith Flick & Lily Hoshina as they try to track down the mysterious Killer B, whom Keith believes can help resolve his sister’s murder.

B: The Succession is the alternatively titled second season, picking up right where the first left off. The series is filled with beautifully animated fight choreography and mystery… though its plot may require a few rewinds and rewatches to fully comprehend.

3 Jessica Jones – Marvel’s First Forray Into Television Is One Of Its Best

10 Shows To Watch If You Liked Invincible

One of Marvel’s first Netflix shows, Jessica Jones shares continuity with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Set in Hell’s Kitchen, the series follows Jessica as she navigates her life as a former superhero-turned-private eye. She’s forced to confront both her past and her future, that the possibility of what happened to her could happen to someone else if she doesn’t stop the man who abused her.

Though a superhero show, the series ultimately feels more like an in-depth character study, giving Jones multiple complex layers of character development that, at the time, was unheard of in the MCU’s stories. The series stars Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Racheal Taylor as Trish Walker, Eka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, & David Tennant as Kilgrave.

2 Yu Yu Hakusho – A Foundational Shonen Work That Inspired A Generation

10 Shows To Watch If You Liked Invincible

One of the most popular Shonen anime of the ’90s, Yu Yu Hakusho is based on the manga series of the same name by Yoshihiro Togashi. Largely set in Japan, it follows a teenage delinquent named Yusuke Urameshi after he is killed in a car accident saving a child’s life. Brought back to life and tasked with becoming the next “Spirit Detective,” he helps to root out demonic influence in the human world.

Yusuke shares many character traits with Invincible, which would make it easier for new fans of the series to relate and connect with him. Though there are instances where the show slows down quite a lot from time to time, its fascinating cast of characters, fantastic world-building, and often touching story make up for it. A live-action series is also currently in development.

1 Raising Dion – Superhero Like You’ve Never Seen Before

Based on the comic and short film written by Dennis Liu, Raising Dion is perhaps the most unique mainstream superhero story in recent years. Its narrative is layered and built around its superhero aspect in various ways and addresses the difficulty of motherhood, sexism, and racism.

The story largely follows single mother Nicole Reese as she raises her superpowered son, Dion Warren, helping him understand his powers and protecting him from people who would exploit them. In addition to its stellar cast and impressive storyline, the show’s special effects hold up well against its competitors, making it a hard-to-resist watch.
