10 Smartest Characters In Clue, Ranked

The many fantastic characters that appear in the cult classic movie Clue exhibit varying levels of intelligence as they contend with murder.

There are few movies that are quite like Clue. Based on the popular board game of the same name, the movie focuses on a group of men and women invited to the house of a mysterious person who is blackmailing them. Murder and mayhem ensue, and it soon becomes clear that one of them is responsible. In a brave (and ultimately risky) move, the movie was released with three separate endings, each of which provided a different solution to the crime.

It has since become a cult classic, and so it’s worth investigating to see who, exactly, are the most intelligent characters in the film.

10 Professor Plum

Christopher Lloyd has been in many great movies, and he brings his signature zany energy to the character of Professor Plum. While his status as a doctor (who no longer practices) suggests that he’s quite a thinker, he still doesn’t have the kind of common sense that would keep him from having an affair with one of his students, which leads to his subsequent disgrace.

What’s more, he ends up murdering the wrong person (Mr. Boddy’s servant rather than Mr. Boddy himself), revealing that he’s not nearly as sharp as he likes to think.

9 Mrs. Peacock

Like Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan has a very peculiar acting style that she brings to the character of Mrs. Peacock. She’s a very cunning sort of person, and she is subtle enough to use her status as the wife of a senator to achieve power by taking bribes from others.

What’s more, she also shows that she has a ruthless side, because in one of the endings she is revealed to be the perpetrator of several of the murders, even though she isn’t smart enough to get away with it.

8 The Cop

Even though he is a policeman, the Cop can’t be said to be one of the smartest characters in the movie. For example, though he clearly knows that something is afoot in the sinister house, he doesn’t put the pieces together fast enough in order to avoid being murdered.

Furthermore, his decision to come to the house at all betrays a lack of judgment, since he should have at least been slightly suspicious that not everything was as it should be with his invitation.

7 Yvette

Yvette is one of Clue’s best characters, for though she poses as a maid, there is much going on under her seemingly vapid surface. She worked as a call girl, and she was canny enough to realize that getting access to that kind of secret would come in handy.

Unfortunately, even though she was quite calculating in some ways, she wasn’t insightful enough to realize that she was putting herself in significant danger, which is why she ended up being one of the murder victims.

6 The Evangelist

Part of the pleasure of a movie like Clue is that it keeps the audience guessing from the beginning to the end, and that includes keeping the true identity of the Evangelist a secret. As it turns out, he’s actually the chief of police.

He thus earns a strong place as one of the movie’s brightest characters, since he’s both able to keep his true identity a secret and manages not to get murdered (unlike several other people). His astuteness is rewarded when he leads the arrest at the end.

5 Mrs. White

The late Madeline Kahn was in many great movies before her death and, like almost every other person in the movie, she has a very particular acting style. And, like the other characters, she’s clever enough to keep her secrets.

In one of the endings, she is revealed to have murdered Scarlett out of jealousy because she had had an affair with her husband, when it was in fact the maid he was sleeping with. She thus deserves credit for being smart enough to figure out the truth about her husband and another woman, as well as for almost getting away with murder.

4 Miss Scarlet

Miss Scarlet is one of the more ruthless characters to appear in Clue, which is what makes her fierce intelligence all the more intimidating. Even before she became a suspect, she was a successful madame in Washington, DC, which enabled her to create her own network of information. She’s also smart enough to kill several people, and she even manages to bend the maid Yvette to her will.

Unfortunately, even her formidable intellect isn’t enough to keep her from getting caught in the end.

3 Mr. Boddy

In some ways, Mr. Boddy is one of the movie’s most important characters, since he is the one that gathers all of the guests to his home. He’s the sort of intelligent person that is able to gather information about the people that he wants to blackmail, and so he deserves a great deal of credit for being able to do so effectively blackmail so many different people from such varying backgrounds.

Unfortunately, he’s one of those people that ends up being too clever for his own good, and his machinations lead to his death.

2 Mr. Green

Mr. Green is one of the movie’s most enigmatic yet complicated characters, and he proves that there’s a great deal more going on than he initially lets on.

In fact, even though he has pretended to be gay throughout the movie, it turns out in one of the endings that he is an investigator with the FBI, and his ability to both disguise himself so effectively (no one manages to see through his disguise) and to figure out who was actually responsible for the murders means that he is one of the movie’s smartest characters.

1 Wadsworth

Given the many great roles that Tim Curry has played, it’s not surprising that he would be regarded as a fan favorite, and his performance in Clue is among his best.

Whether it’s as Mr. Boddy himself or his servant Wadsworth, he manages to show just how smart this character is, particularly since he is, in two of the endings, an FBI agent simply masquerading as the butler. Given how convincing he is in that role, he definitely deserves to be seen as the movie’s most intelligent character.
