10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

The X-Men are unlike almost any other superhero team in any comic book series. Unlike a team like The Avengers, which has mostly unconnected members outside of the team, the X-Men are more like a dysfunctional family. These are all heroes connected as mutants, feared by the world they pledged to protect.

In more recent times, the X-Men have withdrawn from the world, creating their own home in Krakoa, where they are more connected than ever. This connection and isolation from the public also leads them to date and love each other, which has created some of the strangest romances in Marvel Comics history.

10 Magneto & Rogue

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

Magneto is a Holocaust survivor, and the horrors he witnessed there in World War II scarred him for life and caused him to hate and fear those who see others as different. Rogue is half his age, a mutant who could never touch another person without possibly killing them and taking all their memories.

However, the two found each other, and this all started in Uncanny X-Men #274 when they were in the Savage Land together. It also ended before it really had a chance to start. Their relationship was revisited in “Age of Apocalypse,” where Magneto and Rogue were starcrossed lovers who never had a chance.

9 Aurora & Daken

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

A more recent romance in X-Men comics involves two of the most traumatized mutants in comics. Aurora was originally a member of Alpha Flight with her brother, Northstar. While Northstar was arrogant and flamboyant, Aurora had a split personality, at times very passionate and at other times extremely reserved. Daken is Wolverine’s son, although he grew up hating his father for abandoning his mother and himself. In the pages of X-Factor, the two have begun a relationship that is both shocking, and in other ways, perfect.

8 Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

In the main Marvel Comics storyline, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were siblings who looked out for each other early in their careers as heroes and villains but grew apart over the years, with Wanda becoming a hero and Pietro always straddling the line between good and evil.

However, in the Ultimate Comics Universe, it was very different. These two were very close and often hinted that there was more to their relationship than just brother and sister. When Wolverine tracked them one day, he learned the truth, and this was one of the most disturbing romances in comic book history.

7 Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

Cyclops had one great love in his life, and that was Jean Grey. When he watched her sacrifice herself to save him and the X-Men in “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” it shattered him and broke his heart. Scott took some time off from his superhero work to get to know his family and went to his old home in Alaska with his brother Alex. While there, he met a woman who looked exactly like Jean Grey.

Instead of realizing something was wrong, Cyclops fell in love with Madelyne Pryor, and the two got married and had a baby, who grew up to become Cable. Of course, there was something wrong. Madelyne was a clone that Mister Sinister created to ensure Cable’s birth. Scott then left her and their child the instant Jean Grey turned out to be still alive.

6 Jean Grey & Beast

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

The one romance in Jean Grey’s life in Marvel Comics has always been with Cyclops. However, there were two moments where two different versions of Jean Grey went after a different X-Men founding member. In “X-Men Forever,” it was Jean and Beast that hooked up and were a couple. This was an alternate worlds story and was strange for fans who followed these characters. This was repeated in the regular Marvel Universe, though, when the time-displaced Jean Grey chose Beast over Cyclops.

5 Wolverine & Storm

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

When it comes to romance, Wolverine is best known for two things. One was his doomed marriage, and the second was his on-and-off love triangle with Jean Grey and Scott Summers. However, one of his best romances, and the strangest, was with Storm. This could be a rebound relationship for Storm, whose marriage with Black Panther had just ended after Avengers V X-Men. However, the relationship was a great read and was made even more tragic since it ended with Wolverine’s death.

4 Kitty Pryde & Rachel Summers

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

Kitty Pryde has been involved in an on-and-off relationship with Colossus since she was 14 and he was 19. While they remained just friends until Kitty was of age, it is still a controversial relationship because most readers saw Kitty as just a child unable to give consent. However, Kitty’s relationship with Rachel Summers was one that no one saw coming.

There were innuendoes written into Chris Claremont’s stories over the years. However, the two were never actually shown to be in a relationship until Colossus returned from the dead. With all the innuendos, it wasn’t until Rachel ended their relationship that fans had any idea they were even together. Strangely, they kept it hidden the entire time.

3 Angel & Husk

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

What makes Angel and Husk’s relationship so strange was a moment when the two got it on in front of the other X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #440 while flying in the air and their clothes falling to the ground. Husk is a mutant that can rip off her skin and turn it into anything. Angel is a pretty-boy playboy mutant with the wings of an angel. When they got it on above Wolverine and Husk’s own mother, it cemented their strange relationship.

2 Wolverine and Jean Grey

10 Strangest Romances In XMen Comics

The biggest love triangle in X-Men history was the one between Cyclops, Wolverine, and Jean Grey. For Cyclops and Jean Grey, they always seemed destined to be together. However, Wolverine was the bad boy that always seemed to attract Jean’s attention. This was so popular that it moved into movies, highlighted in the original X-Men trilogy. Even now, with the mutants on Krakoa and Scott and Jean seemingly back together, she still slips away with Wolverine on occasion.

1 Krakoa & Arrako

While most people look at Krakoa as an island that the mutants now live on in peace, the island is actually a sentient being. He first appeared in Giant-Sized X-Men #1 when the original X-Men ended up trapped there, and Professor X had to put together a new team (Wolverine, Stor, etc…) to save them. Arrako was another sentient island, and the two had a relationship, which seems strange on its own. In Dawn of X, the two islands remet and merged in a very uncomfortable moment for the X-Men.
