Doctor Who has its fair share of strong characters, especially when they can originate from just about anywhere (and anywhen) in space and time. The show’s protagonist Time Lord, the Doctor, shows mental strength as he uses his intelligence and determination to battle foes. The Doctor’s companions also have to possess courage and be quick-thinking in the face of danger.

However, the strongest characters in the show vary from the Doctor’s companions, regular side characters and allies of the Doctor, and, of course, the most fearsome enemies. The strongest characters demonstrate their physical strength, but they also possess high intelligence, influential power, or supernatural abilities as well.

10 Strax’s Strength And Jenny’s Combat Skills Are A Winning Combo

Sontarans are a cloned race of super-strong soldiers, and Strax is no different. Often humorously proclaiming his love for grenades, Strax’s stocky build, weaponry knowledge, and eagerness to use his skills in a fight make him a strong opponent. Strax is one part of the iconic and lovable trio with Jenny and Madame Vastra. Jenny’s social skills counterbalance Strax and Vastra’s alien perspective, while Vastra provides wisdom and calms Strax down when he’s too excited by the prospect of combat. Jenny may be human, but her combat skills and battle suit she wears underneath her clothes prove she is a force to be reckoned with. This trio is leaps ahead of the Victorian society they call home.

9 Silurians Are Intelligent And Deadly

Silurians are a resilient reptilian species that have survived in hibernation under the ground for years. They have superior scientific knowledge and are more technologically advanced than humans. In “The Hungry Earth,” Silurian soldier Alaya is arrogant but also willing to die for the cause she believes in. She uses her venomous forked tongue to poison Tony and manipulates the group by claiming she knows which human will betray the others by killing her. Some Silurians are rational and kind towards humans, but they won’t hesitate if they think they are under attack. The Silurian soldiers make up a sizable army with their laser weapons, and the small Welsh mining town on the surface didn’t have the numbers or resources needed to defend itself.

8 Zygons Are Telepathic Shapeshifters

Zygons are not only physically strong, but they are shapeshifters who can perfectly replicate other species (including humans and animals). They also have large bodies covered in suckers, venomous barbs on their palms, and venom sacs in their tongues. Zygons are the ultimate deceivers, able to use telepathy to steal the physical form of someone from their target’s memory. This means Zygons can secretly infiltrate human society or pose as influential figures like Queen Elizabeth I in “The Day of the Doctor.” While Zygons and humans reached a peace treaty on Earth, rogue Zygon Bonnie and her followers threatened that fragile peace in “The Zygon Invasion.”

7 The Doctor-Donna Is Brilliant And Unique

The Doctor-Donna was created when companion Donna Noble touched The Doctor’s severed hand (which still held regeneration energy), forming a “biological meta-crisis.” Donna retained her personality but gained The Doctor’s memories and intellectual capacity. This mix of a Time Lord’s intelligence and Donna’s human perspective and humor is a winning combination on-screen.

The Doctor-Donna saves the Earth from the Daleks and returns the 26 stolen planets back to their proper locations in space, an act which The Doctor alone could not achieve. Sadly, Donna’s human brain would have been overloaded, like Idris was unable to host the TARDIS’ consciousness, and so the Doctor was forced to remove any trace of himself from her mind, including her memories of their adventures together.

Professor River Song is the complete package: sassy, intelligent, and brave. She demonstrates mental and physical strength as a logical-thinking archeologist with combat and weaponry skills. River is known to use humor to carry out her plans or gain The Doctor’s attention, like vandalizing the oldest cliff in the universe or impersonating Cleopatra. Often, River does not mind using weapons or hallucinogenic lipstick against targets, putting her in more of a moral gray area than The Doctor. However, as she matures and battles the conditioning she faced as a child, River shows genuine compassion, like when she sacrifices herself in The Library. As a child of the TARDIS, River was imbued with Time Lord DNA and the ability to regenerate upon injury. River Song is truly a unique individual with immense strength.

5 The Weeping Angels Are Cruel Survivalists

Often nicknamed the Lonely Assassins, the Weeping Angels have a highly effective defense mechanism: they turn to stone when observed by any living creature, even another Angel. This allows the Weeping Angels to exist almost undetected by other species and quietly infiltrate planets like a virus. The traditional way that the Weeping Angels kill is both kind and cruel: they send their target back in time with a single touch, feeding off the energy of their target’s potential days, while they live in the past. These immensely-strong villains are able to survive because the only way to defeat them is to trick them into staring into another Angel’s eyes.

4 The Daleks Are Ruthless And Lack Emotion

Daleks are The Doctor’s greatest foe, apart from The Master. No matter how many times The Doctor defeats them, the Daleks always manage to survive. Their lack of emotion or empathy makes them morally ambiguous, but it also means they won’t hesitate to take out their enemies. Daleks are able to kill any target with one shot, and their fragile bodies are protected by their hard metallic shell. Daleks use their vast technology to ensure their race lives on no matter what, and they don’t hesitate to use other species or create pawns to carry out their evil schemes.

3 The Master Is Cunning And Willing To Use Force

The Master is one of The Doctor’s main antagonists and is essentially a dark mirror of The Doctor’s character. As Time Lords, they share high intelligence and understanding of the sciences, but The Master has a more hypnotic influence over others, which he used to become Prime Minister.

The Master bears the burden of a Time Lord, seeing “what is, what was, what could be, what must not.” Paired with this burden, The Master also survived witnessing The Untempered Schism as a child, though it led to him becoming mentally unstable. Still, The Master is cunning and always has a plan. He often challenges The Doctor to a battle of wits but also uses force, weapons, and manipulation.

2 The Doctor Can’t Be Stopped

Across all of time and space, one name strikes fear in those who would seek to cause harm; The Doctor. With nothing more than their sonic screwdriver and wits, The Doctor has managed to overcome every obstacle and save the day more times than even they can count. Traveling with their companions, The Doctor has always found a way out of the most dire of situations, and while they prefer peaceful resolutions to violence, they will fight when they have to.

The Doctor is an unstoppable force for all that is good, and while the weight of their many lives and personal losses weigh on them, they never let anything stop them from keeping the universe safe.

1 The Beast Is An All-Knowing Ancient Demon

The Beast is arguably one of the show’s scariest villains, like the Mephisto of the Doctor Who universe. A mighty gigantic demon, the Beast is possibly responsible for the imagery of a horned Devil that perseveres throughout every culture. The Beast makes the knowledgeable Doctor question his beliefs, claiming that he existed before time and the creation of the universe. The Beast was too powerful, so his physical form was imprisoned deep underground on the planet Krop Tor, but his soul or presence reached the surface. His supernatural abilities include infiltrating and controlling technology, possession of hosts, and telepathy to know a character’s fears and secrets. Viewers don’t get a definite answer on what The Beast was (and if he was destroyed). The mystery makes him more terrifying.
