Alice Wu’s coming-of-age rom-com, The Half of It, premiered on Netflix in May 2020. The film quickly found a large fanbase and received a lot of critical acclaim. The story takes place in the fictional town of Squahamish, located basically in the middle of nowhere, USA.
Ellie Chu lives with her father, who is a station master. Her mother died when she was younger, and after immigrating to the U.S., the Chus struggle to integrate because of the father’s struggle to find good employment. At school, Ellie writes other students’ papers for money, but when Paul Munsky asks her to write a love letter to Aster Flores, she feels conflicted. The queer rom-com is equal parts charming and funny. Here are ten other teen dramas that fans of The Half Of It will enjoy.
10 Booksmart (2019)
Olivia Wilde hit the nail on the head with her directorial debut. Booksmart stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein as two clever, witty, and hilarious best friends in their senior year of high school.
Just before graduation, they realize they haven’t had any fun because they’ve been so busy studying. The night takes them on a sequence of fun adventures and wild discoveries. Their friendship is endearing and empowering, and Dever’s lesbian character has some interesting experiences with romance, just like Ellie Chu.
9 As You Are (2016)
For those who enjoyed the nostalgic, small-town vibe of Squahamish, As You Are is just the film you’re looking for. Starring Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things, Amandla Stenberg of The Hunger Games, and Owen Campbell of Super Dark Times, the trio forms an unlikely and unique bond.
Though this movie tilts more towards mystery than comedy, it plays with many of the same themes as The Half Of It. Heaton and Campbell’s characters come to terms with their unexpected attraction to one another, while Stenberg’s character deals with discrimination in the early 90s climate of an old-fashioned town.
8 I Am Not Okay With This (2020)
A bit of comedy, a lesbian romance, a jock, and a nerd: sounds like The Half Of It, but it’s actually the product of bringing together the creators of Stranger Things and The End of the F***ing World.
This Netflix series is rife with teen angst, just like Alice Wu’s film, but also adds the element of superpowers. The dynamic between the three main characters is pretty much a replica of Ellie, Aster, and Paul’s relationship, except that here, Sophia Lillis leads on her male counterpart.
7 To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
Based on Jenny Han’s beloved books, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is a film trilogy about Lara Jean Covey, a half-Korean high school student who writes letters to her crushes – but doesn’t send them.
Her sister discovers her letters and sends them out against her will, which results in a very embarrassing sequence of events for Lara Jean. On the upside, she gets to pretend to date one of her biggest crushes, Peter Kavinsky. The films do a decent job of representing the way Lara Jean’s family has integrated into America through the generations.
6 The Miseducation Of Cameron Post (2018)
Chloë Grace Moretz is Cameron Post, a girl who is caught kissing her friend/secret girlfriend after prom in 1993. Her parents send her away to a gay conversion camp called God’s Promise.
While being subject to a variety of gay conversion therapies, Cameron makes some friends who, like her, pretend to go along with the treatment while waiting to be released. Though considerably darker than The Half Of It, the style and setting are similar, as are the themes surrounding religion.
5 Never Have I Ever (2020-)
Never Have I Ever is a representational rom-com series from Mindy Kaling. Narrated by John McEnroe (yes, that John McEnroe, the tennis player), the series explores the complicated life of Devi Vishwakumar, an Indian-American high school student.
Her late father visits her in dreams and other visions, usually to give her advice, sometimes to confuse her. Meanwhile, Devi is trying to brush off her physical trauma and get popular boy Paxton’s attention. She’s also an intensely competitive academic, who fights for her attention with her two best friends, Eleanor and Fabiola, who comes out as gay.
4 Trinkets (2019-2020)
A Netflix original, Trinkets is series about three girls who realize they have something in common: kleptomania. But that’s about the only thing they have in common.
Elodie, grieving the death of her mother, moves to Portland to live with her father’s family. She meets Tabitha, a popular girl in an abusive relationship, and Moe, an academically gifted girl in a secret relationship who sometimes mixes with the wrong people. Elodie is exploring her first relationships and is unsure how to approach romance as a lesbian in high school.
3 The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)
Based on Stephen Chbosky’s popular novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower stars Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller, and Mae Whitman as another trio of unlikely friends.
Charlie is fifteen and mourning his friend’s recent suicide. He’s extremely introverted and doesn’t have any friends until two seniors befriend him. Ezra Miller’s character is queer, and the film finds many ways to be funny and uplifting while maintaining the nostalgic vibe of the 90s.
2 The DUFF (2015)
A 2015 teen comedy, The DUFF is a critique of high school clique culture. Mae Whitman stars as Bianca, who bears the label “DUFF” (aka Designated Ugly Fat Friend).
She realizes that people are using her to get closer to her other, more popular friends. Her desire to change pushes her to team up with Wesley, an old friend who is now higher up on the social food chain.
1 The End Of The F***ing World (2017-2019)
This British teen drama is based on a Charles Forsman comic and did exceptionally well as a TV show. The critically acclaimed series stars Jessica Barden and James Lawther, who play two angsty teenagers from very different walks of life.
James thinks he’s a psychopath and plans to kill Alyssa, who just wants to have sex with someone and thinks she could possibly fall in love with James. They run away from home together, evading the law as they go after accidentally murdering a serial killer and rapist. The series features some diverse characters and interesting dialogue surrounding diversity.
