Attack on Titan follows Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps as they battle for survival against the human-eating titans. Based on the anime and directed by Shinji Higuchi, the 2015 live-action film received mixed reviews from fans and focused on loosely adapting the first two seasons of the show. However, the franchise has yet to receive a Western live-action adaptation.

Rumors have been circulating since IT director Andy Mushietti was attached to the project in 2018, but so far no updates have been issued. The show is full of lore, themes, and complex characters that would be difficult to adapt into one feature film aimed at a Western audience, especially as the themes in the fourth season tie so closely to Japanese history. Despite this, fans have high hopes for a Western film adaptation, and there are many things that they hope to see brought to the big screen.

Many characters’ backstories and development revolve around seeing the violence that the titans inflict on humanity, and their suffering makes their characters more complex.

Toning down the violence to appeal to a wider audience would be a misstep in adapting this franchise, so Mushietti tapping into his previous work and bringing the fights to the big screen in all their bloody glory is a must.

Western adaptations of anime franchises have previously cast White actors in non-White roles, for example, Ghost in the Shell (2017) cast Scarlett Johansson as an originally Asian main character. Attack on Titan has a cast comprised of lots of races, so there are plenty of opportunities for diversity to be brought to the big screen through this story.

However, the challenge of casting any adaptation would be finding a perfectly intense and passionate main cast that can perform stunts and convey the complex emotions that Eren and the crew display throughout the show.

Casting the right Eren Yeager would be a challenge, but the actor having to convey all the emotions that Eren displays would be a struggle. Eren is fiercely passionate and determined to exterminate the Titans, which works in the anime’s favor by having a strong, clear protagonist. However, Western feature films favor a clear three-act structure, and Eren’s journey has not yet ended in the anime.

Seeing Eren’s journey from start to finish would be fun on a Hollywood budget, but this may be difficult to do in such a short frame of time. In addition, since the 2015 film already covered seasons 1 and 2, it may be interesting to see how Mushietti would adapt season 4 Eren, during his transformation from angry child to cold-blooded killer.

7 Maneuver Gear

The Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear that the characters use to defeat the titans would be so much fun to see portrayed in live-action, and the gear is so crucial to the success of the Survey Corps missions that it would be detrimental not to include it. The gear evolves throughout the series to include ranged attacks and firearms, as newer weapons are introduced to the island of Paradis in season 4.

Including the gear would give opportunities to show the characters’ growth, for example, Eren’s determination to master the equipment and Levi’s supernatural talent for killing even the toughest titans. While the 2015 film included the traditional gear seen in season 1, the Western adaptation could show off the evolution of the gear and the characters’ black assassin outfits from season 4.

6 Epic Fights

The hook for many fans of the anime was the detailed and beautifully drawn animation within the fight scenes. Translating the fights into live-action would require innovation and clarity to convey the big emotions at the heart of the fights to the audience. The abilities of the Survey Corps might be difficult to translate, due to the fast pace and violent nature of the fights, but presenting epic fights is critical to the success of a live-action adaptation.

Feeling the danger that the characters are in would help immerse the audience into the world and story, as well as create shocking and memorable moments, such as Eren’s near-death in season 1.

5 Titan Transformations

The titans themselves must be an area of focus in any adaptation of this story. The 2015 film included eerie depictions of the titans, picturing them towering over the humans menacingly. Attack on Titan is praised for its handling of deep themes and complex characters, and it would be a shame to lose this in a Western adaptation. A feature-length film at 120 minutes might not be enough time to develop the full cast, but focusing on the journeys of the main characters – Eren, Mikasa, and Armin – might provide just enough material to expand on the deep themes that the anime tackles.

Themes of freedom, determination, and resilience can be thoroughly explored through Eren, Mikasa, and Armin, and doing so would stay true to the anime’s original concepts. Seeing the characters fight titans is exciting and fun, but these themes would give more grit to the adaptation and make it a lot more thought-provoking for an audience.

3 Intense Villains

Since the 2015 live-action film focused on the initial seasons of the show, a Western adaptation could be smart and focus on season 4, providing audiences with more backstory and lore to help them navigate the world and the island of Paradis. If so, the film would have some brilliant choices for main villains: the chillingly evil Beast Titan/Zeke Jaeger, the other Nine Titans, the fanatic Jaegerists, and more.

The Beast Titan’s first on-screen dialogue was genuinely chilling, and such a surprise as many viewers had become used to the titans being unable to talk. Zeke himself is also a powerful figure. No matter which period of the show the film focuses on, having a clear and intense villain would be a great plot thread to explore.

2 Iconic Outfits

The Survey Corps’ uniform is beloved by fans, so introducing this outfit to a Western audience would be exciting for new cosplayers to discover. The Wings of Freedom logo and the tan jacket are a common sight among the crowd at conventions, so this is one way of bringing fans together and welcoming a Western audience into the fandom.

In the anime, the uniforms distinguish the main characters from the other soldiers and make the divisions within the military clear. The film should embrace this as an opportunity not to drop lengthy exposition about the military, instead using the uniforms to do the talking.

1 Survey Corps

Although a feature film would probably not have enough time to develop them all, and it would make more sense to focus on the main three characters, including the Survey Corps is a must as these characters are beloved to fans. The soldiers add to the themes of humanity and freedom, showing off the best and worst of humanity through their humor, determination, and rivalries. Their disagreements make the characters more complex, and they are able to grow by learning from one another.

The Survey Corps would also add much-needed comic relief, for example, Sasha’s love of food, and would add immensely to the fight scenes by showing humanity banding together to take down a common threat.
