1000-Lb Sisters is currently in its third season, and there’s been plenty of drama in the sisters’ lives up to now. From a humble start on YouTube to a high-risk pregnancy, for viewers new to the world of Tammy and Amy, there are some important things to know about the duo before season 3 premieres on November 15.

The Duo Started Out On YouTube

The sisters actually became famous thanks to their YouTube channel. Under Amy’s YouTube channel, the pair posted videos including vlogs, beauty hauls, and make-up tutorials — but it was one challenge video in particular that initially made them go viral.

In November 2014, they posted a video participating in the chubby bunny challenge, which has since racked up millions of views along with other videos on the channel.

The Sister’s Weight Equalled 1,000Lb In Season 1

Given the title of the show, viewers may initially think the sisters weigh 1,000lbs each — but that’s not the case. At the start of season 1, Amy weighed 400lb and Tammy weighed 600lb. This is where the title of the show comes from.

The show centers around the sister’s ambitious weight-loss plans and they’ve had some success, meaning that they’re technically no longer the 1000lb sisters.

Amy Had Weight-Loss Surgery But Tammy Didn’t

The first season of 1000-Lb Sisters followed Amy and Tammy’s journey to lose enough weight to be approved for bariatric surgery. However, their weight loss hasn’t always stayed on track.

Amy hit her weight loss goal and was able to undergo the surgery. Tammy, meanwhile, was given the difficult news that she didn’t qualify. This has made some fans feel bad for Tammy, while others criticize her “toxic behavior” and tendency to blame others for her issues.

Amy Was An Average Weight Until A Life-Changing Event

Amy states that she was an average size until around 10 years old. She began to gain weight after the devastating loss of her grandmother changed her whole life.

Speaking to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Amy said of her grandmother: “My mom worked two to three jobs at a time, and my grandma was basically our mom. When she died, our whole world changed.” Following her death, Amy and Tammy had to rely more on themselves. They didn’t know anything about nutrition, or how to cook, so their diet was mainly convenience junk food.

The Sisters Have A Strained Relationship With Their Mom

Amy and Tammy have a complicated relationship with their mom, Darlene Rednour. Darlene was introduced in season 1 of 1000-Lb Sisters, but her appearance on the show didn’t win her many fans. Darlene made it clear that she wasn’t supportive of her daughters’ weight-loss mission, telling Tammy that she thought she would give up on the plan because she lacks willpower.

Darlene was noticeably absent from the second season of 1000-Lb Sisters.

Tammy Has Experienced Serious Health Issues

Tammy’s list of health issues is long. She struggles with mobility, relying on family members for help getting around. She had gout and pneumonia in the past as well as battling high blood pressure and a suspected thyroid problem. In April 2021, she was even placed on life support after a blood clot formed in her lungs.

The Hardest Part Of Their Diet Was Giving Up Sodas

Amy has admitted that the hardest part of the weight loss journey was giving up sugary drinks — or “sodies,” as the sisters call them.

Before their weight-loss mission, the sisters never drank water. Instead, Tammy has stated she would drink up to twelve sodas a day. Amy added that, as kids, their mom told them if “they ate a sugar, drink a diet coke afterward and it’ll cancel out.”

Amy Is A Mom

A central focal point of season 1 was Amy’s desire to lose weight in order to have a family. Recently married, Amy longed to have a child but struggled to get pregnant because of her weight and subsequent health issues.

That all changed in 2020 when Amy and her husband, Michael Halterman managed to conceive. But the pregnancy wasn’t without its difficulties. Amy had to have a C-section in order to deliver the baby successfully. Despite health scares, the couple welcomed a healthy baby boy, Gage Halterman, in November 2020.

Tammy Is Part Of The LGBTQ+ Community

In February 2021, 34-year-old Tammy announced that she is pansexual, coming out publicly in an episode of 1000-Lb Sisters. Speaking about her sexuality, she said: “Love is love. I would date anybody whether they’re transgender, straight, gay.”

Tammy previously identified as bisexual but realized she was pansexual after her friend came out. After a conversation about what pansexuality meant, Tammy realized the label better fit her too as she would have no issue dating a transgender person. The elder Slaton sister has had a number of relationships over the years, including with Tammy’s former girlfriend, Kane.

The Sisters Hoped Their Show Would Change Perceptions And Inspire Others

When they were approached by TLC to make the series, Tammy and Amy wanted to use 1000-Lb Sisters to show the world a different side to them. They wanted to move away from the goofy personas they portrayed on their YouTube channel for so many years.

They also hoped that the show would demonstrate the day-to-day reality and struggles of living as an overweight person. Their ultimate goal was to inspire others to follow in their footsteps and try to live healthier lives.
