Koh The Face Stealer is a recurring villain in the Avatar series. He is one of the most powerful and smartest spirits in the Spirit World. He has the ability to take the faces of other living beings that make the mistake of expressing any form of emotion when in his presence. As a result, his facial appearance is always different, ranging from animals to humans.
Koh’s spirit body normally takes the form of a monstrous centipede-like creature. As for his habitat, he prefers to live under a tree in the Spirit World though he enjoys roaming as well. Unlike other spirits, Koh loves interacting with humans. Here are a couple of details about him that Avatar fans didn’t know.
10 Age
According to the 20th episode of The Last Airbender’s first season that aired on Nickelodeon, Koh is said to be just as old as the Moon and Ocean spirits. Koh is also among the very few entities who recall these spirits crossing over to the physical world, where they proceeded to become koi fish.
And according to the tenth chapter of The Rise of Kyoshi titled “The Spirit,” Koh is a bit younger than some of the other spirits. They even think of him as just an “upstart.”
9 He Is Amoral
Koh is neither good nor evil. He is on the fence. Even though he does plenty of bad things, he does good ones too. For example, he stole Ummi’s face in order to punish Avatar Kuruk for his deep-rooted arrogance but then he proceeded to tell Aang the names of the Moon and Ocean Spirits as well as their location so that they could be saved.
Koh also gladly led Aang to his former Avatar lives. Koh is also very social compared to other spirits. Father Glowworm even described him as “chatty” due to his love for having conversations with humans.
8 The Name
The villain chose the name “Koh” for himself after he grew distant from his biological mother known as The Mother Of Faces. This little detail was revealed in “The Search Part Three.”
But according to “The Search Part Two,” he also likes stealing faces in order to be close to his mom who possesses the ability to give faces to all living organisms as well as to bestow expressive markings on plants. The Mother Of Faces is often kind enough to change someone’s face if the reason is justified.
7 Reference To Asian Culture
Koh’s name is a slight alteration to the Japanese word kao which means “face. Koh’s name isn’t the only one that has been derived from Asian culture in the series. For example, Hei Bai—the spirit of the forest—means “black-white” in Mandarin.
Momo is a Japanese word meaning “Peach” while Toph Beifong means “The North Region.” Iroh means “Chinese mugwort.” This is a type of flower that’s used in the making of a traditional Chinese herbal concoction called moxibustion. Gyatso means “Ocean” in the Tibetian dialect.
6 A Lie?
In Avatar: The Last Airbender’s episode titled “The Siege of the North, Part 2, “Koh claimed that he stole the face of Ummi about eight or nine hundred years ago. This can’t be the case since Avatar Kuruk actually lived only about four hundred to five hundred years before the claim.
Perhaps this was simply an error on the part of the screenwriters. Koh’s memory can’t be wrong. There is no other claim he has ever made that was incorrect.
5 Kuruk Never Forgave Him
Kuruk—the Water Tribe Avatar—died at the age of 33 after his spiritual illness drained his lifeforce. Before that Koh had stolen the face of his fiance Ummi in order to punish him for his previous reckless actions. Koh ended up trapping Ummi forever in the spirit world and a relentless Kuruk never stopped trying to save her.
Kuruk traveled to the Spirit World every year on his wedding anniversary to try and save Ummi but he always failed. As a result of the pain Koh had caused him, Kuruk always held a grudge until his death.
4 The Known Number Of Faces He Has Stolen
Even though Koh is said to have stolen a million faces, only a few of them are known. There’s the white female Noh mask with red lips and red lips that Koh likes wearing. There’s also the curly-tailed blue nose face that he collected from a monkey. He also stole the face of Avatar Kuruk’s fiance Ummi.
There’s a bearded and mustached man’s face as well, and a light brown owl’s face that’s notable for its emerald green eyes. Koh has also been spotted with a blue oni face that’s similar to the Zuko’s Blue Spirit mask worn by Zuko. Lastly, there’s an old man’s face that has blue eyes and a white mustache and blue eyes. Not to forget the brown-haired of face of a Fire Nation soldier.
3 Koh’s Mother Can Replace The Faces He Stole
When Zuko and Aang were looking for Zuko’s mother, Ursa, they discovered that she had a fruitful conversation with the Mother of Faces. It was agreed that Ursa’s face would be changed upon banishment so that she could have a new identity and live peacefully away from Ozai.
Koh enjoys interacting with humans and often gives himself the task of punishing wrongdoers. He is the child of the Mother of Faces and he’s said to have been born thousands of years before the beginning of the Hundred Year War. Here are several other things you didn’t know about Koh.

How many times has Koh been featured in Avatar media? The villain has most notably appeared in the animated television series The Last Airbender which aired on Nickelodeon. Specifically, he appeared in the Season One (Book One) episode “The Siege of the North, Part 2” and in the Book Three (Season 3) episode “Sozin’s Comet, Part 2: The Old Masters.”
He has also made appearances in the first to fourth chapters of Escape from the Spirit World. Koh was notably absent from the 2010 action-adventure fantasy film The Last Airbender. Instead, there was the Dragon Spirit that took over the roles of Koh, Avatar Roku, Fang, and Guru Pathi.

Koh The Face Stealer is voiced by American actor Erik Todd Dellums in The Last Airbender. Erik ha plenty of other notable roles. He also voiced the devious elf Aaravos in The Dragon Prince and Prince Arcann in the online multiplayer role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Eriko has had minor roles in a number of motion pictures too. He has appeared as a character in a number of Spike Lee films such as Do The Right Thing. He has also had cameos in a number of popular TV shows such as Homeland and The Wire.
