Mr. Fantastic is the leader of The Fantastic Four, the original Marvel superhero team celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2021. Reed Richards is due to join the MCU along with the rest of the team in the not too distant future, but despite his relative status as an icon, there are a lot of things about him only comic fans know.

Anticipation is high for Reed Richards in the MCU, given the intense speculation that he was the Engineer from WandaVision. As awareness of the character grows, fans may be compelled to dive into his comic history, which is much more interesting and complex than they may realize.

10 The Marvel-1

The origin of The Fantastic Four begins with the Marvel-1, an experimental hyperspace rocket that Reed Richards designed himself. And this was only one of his many inventions. Unable to obtain clearance from NASA to launch, Richards and his friends and colleagues Ben Grimm, and Sue and Johnny Storm blast off in the ship.

The fact that he was dealing with hyperspace while the real world was just getting started with satellites speaks to the fact that Reed Richards is one of the smartest Marvel characters.

9 Blinded By Science

Reed Richards’ mind is extraordinary, allowing him to think up wondrous technology like rocket ships and time machines. He does get tunnel vision sometimes, and especially with the love of his life, Sue Storm, The Invisible Woman.

Richards is often shown obsessing over a scientific challenge, while Sue tries in vain to get his attention. Despite his getting lost in his work on a regular basis, Reed and Sue Richards remain one of the greatest couples in all comic books, having been married since Fantastic Four Annual #3 in 1965.

8 Shutting Down His Own Son

Family is considered the core dynamic in the world of The Fantastic Four, even if it’s sometimes dysfunctional. One instance in which it got very much so was when Reed Richards had to use his inventions to shut down the incredible power of his son, Franklin.

At the time, and until just recently, Franklin Richards was one of the most powerful mutants in Marvel Comics. His power to rewrite reality grew haywire in issues #140 and 141 of the series and Reed was forced to shut down his mind to save the universe.

7 The Trial Of Reed Richards

Reed Richards’ actions would come under increasing scrutiny as the character evolved in the comics. One of the biggest instances of this was in Fantastic Four #262. Reed was put on trial by the Shi’Ar Empire for saving the life of Galactus in an earlier adventure, which they condemned because of Galactus’ destruction of planets.

Reed was acquitted of the charge when Eternity, one of the most powerful Marvel Comics cosmic beings, revealed to everyone at the trial that Galactus’ role in the life and death of worlds was in its way part of the natural cycle.

6 Leaving The Fantastic Four

For a brief time, Mr. Fantastic actually left the Fantastic Four. Only comic fans may know that he and the Invisible Woman both moved over to the Avengers in Fantastic Four #304. They effectively retired from The FF, but their stint on the Avengers was brief.

They were part of the team between Avengers #300-305, and Reed ultimately balked at the chance to make one of the best Avengers rosters ever when his leadership style clashed with Captain America. The real-world reason, as mentioned by writer-artist Walter Simonson in “Modern Masters Volume 8: Walter Simonson,” was that he found out he could not use the characters in the Avengers as he planned, leading to a quick exit.

5 Brute

Several variants of Mr. Fantastic exist in the Marvel multiverse, with some of the best variants coming from the What If..? series of comic books. One of the most significant variations on Reed Richards came from the Negative Zone. He was secretly replaced by a double who later revealed themselves to be Brute, a hulking purple figure.

Brute battled The Invisible Woman in Fantastic Four #182, but ultimately sacrificed his life for the lives of The FF once he saw the way that Reed Richards was loved by them.

4 Doctor Doom’s Best Man

Doctor Doom has committed numerous heinous acts against The Fantastic Four over the years. But he and Reed Richards maintain grudging respect for one another that resulted in the very unlikely act of Reed becoming Doom’s best man at his recent wedding.

It was a nice gesture and an opportunity for the old opponents to perhaps bury the hatchet for once, but the wedding collapsed into chaos when it was revealed that Johnny Storm had a prior relationship with Lady Victorious, Doom’s fiancee.

3 The Illuminati

Reed Richards’ ability to make hard decisions, along with his superior intellect, led to his joining The Illuminati. This all-star and completely secret group of Marvel heroes comes together to prevent cataclysmic events, like the Kree-Skrull War from catching Earth unaware again.

Richards played a role in some major and questionable decisions by the group, which including exiling Hulk to space, eventually leading to his becoming stranded on Sakaar. The group also plays a role in the Secret Invasion crossover event, possibly indicating fans could see them in the MCU in the future.

2 The Maker

Just as some of Loki’s variants in the multiverse are very different from him, Mr. Fantastic’s comic book variations are also equally diverse. One of the most important that could eventually play a role in the MCU is The Maker. The Maker is an evil version of Richards from the Ultimate Comics line.

The Maker is far less scrupulous than Reed Richards from Earth-616 and he has since traveled across time and space to enter the main Marvel continuity. With the multiverse in the MCU, it is very possible this version of Mr. Fantastic appears at some point.

1 The Council

There are nearly infinite variants of Reed Richards, and like the many powerful variations of Kang The Conqueror, they banded together from across the multiverse to form the Council of Reeds. The Interdimensional Council of Reeds debuted in Fantastic Four #570 back in 2009.

They are led by a trio of Reed variants, all of whom wear the Infinity Gauntlet from their respective universes. The Council is another possible subject for the MCU to adapt and may come sooner rather than later, given the arrival of Kang and his variants.
