Peter Parker and MJ’s relationship is set to play a major role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. MJ isn’t Mary Jane Watson from Marvel Comics, though their relationship has some parallels. Comic book fans know that Spider-Man and Mary Jane’s relationship is one of the cornerstones of Spider-Man mythology, and its long and complicated path likely has some bearing on what will play out in the movies.

Spider-Man has had other significant relationships in Marvel Comics, including with Gwen Stacy and Felicia Hardy, but his romance with Mary Jane remains the most important for fans. It’s seen many ups and downs, including breakups and deaths and magical intervention, but despite all of the troubles of living in a comic book universe, it seems nothing can keep them apart.

She Was Mentioned Long Before She Appeared

The relationship between Spider-Man and Mary Jane is one of the most significant in Marvel Comics. It seemed that the comics understood this even before the story played out as Mary Jane was teased long before she ever appeared. She is first mentioned by Aunt May as a possible blind date for Peter in The Amazing Spider-Man #15.

She then makes essentially a cameo appearance in issue #25, and it’s not until issue #42 that she makes her iconic entrance into Peter’s life, uttering the now-classic line, “Face it, Tiger… you’ve just hit the jackpot.”

Mary Jane Knew About Peter Before Meeting Him

There are several iterations of Spider-Man and Mary Jane’s relationship in the comics thanks to different alternate realities. Updates and retcons also alter things slightly in the main Earth-616 continuity, and one such revision was the fact that Mary Jane had known of Peter Parker long before she met him.

She initially sees him when she’s 13, but doesn’t meet him properly (despite being neighbors) until a few years later. In the Ultimate Comics universe of Earth-1610, the two are close friends from childhood.

Gwen Stacy’s Death Brought Them Together

Mary Jane Watson wasn’t always the main love interest of Spider-Man. They were only friends when Gwen Stacy died in The Amazing Spider-Man #121, but this tragic moment brought them closer together. Stricken with grief, Peter Parker pushes Mary Jane away. Instead, she chooses to stay with him in one of the most iconic moments in their relationship.

Spider-Man dealt with his grief for a long time, and Mary Jane became a much more mature and empathetic character as well. The two slowly began to date and would eventually become one of the best relationships in all comic books.

They Broke Up A Few Times

Though Spider-Man and Mary Jane are generally thought of as one of Marvel Comics’ most stable couples, thanks to their close connection in most other media, the two have actually spent about as much time apart as they have together. They routinely broke up throughout their relationship, going back to the beginning.

After the two formally meet in The Amazing Spider-Man #42, they began dating. But Mary Jane’s relative immaturity led to the breaking up and Peter dating Gwen Stacy. They also broke up a few times before marrying in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21 in 1987.

Mary Jane And Black Cat Are Not Friends

Mary Jane has had to deal with several romantic rivals for Spider-Man’s affection, beginning with Gwen Stacy. One of the most dramatic rivals was the Black Cat. Comic book fans know the Black Cat has been a mostly flirty partner of Peter Parker for decades, but in the ’80s, things escalated between her and Mary Jane.

After Black Cat returned from Europe to find out Spider-Man and Mary Jane had married, she confronted Mary Jane directly. This didn’t rattle Mary Jane, and neither did Felicia’s very obvious attempts to make Spider-Man jealous.

Spider-Man And Mary Jane Lost A Child

One aspect of Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s relationship it’s likely only comic book fans know is that they lost a child. This tragic event occurred in the mid-90s, in The Amazing Spider-Man #418 after Mary Jane is poisoned by an accomplice of the Green Goblin.

This sad event comes in the middle of a series of controversial events in the comics. The Clone Saga saw Peter Parker believe he was a clone, stop being Spider-Man, and Mary Jane loses the baby. Much of it has been forgotten, literally thanks to the machinations of Mephisto, who erased Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage from existence in One More Day.

They’re Parents In Another Timeline

Thanks to the Spider-Verse in the comics, there are many alternate versions of Spider-Man. As a result, there are many versions of Mary Jane, as well, and one of the most interesting iterations of Spider-Man and Mary Jane’s relationship sees them become parents.

In the alternate universe of Renew Your Vows, Peter and Mary Jane are married and have a daughter, Annie May Parker. All three end up becoming superheroes together, donning costumes and helping people, despite initially seeking to keep as low a profile as possible.

Spider-Man Thought She Had Died

Both Spider-Man and Mary Jane have been in constant peril in the comics since the very beginning, but one of their greatest crisis points happens in Amazing Spider-Man #13 from 2000. In this issue, Mary Jane decides to leave Peter after some difficulty, but then her plane explodes in mid-air.

Spider-Man believes she is dead for some time and even tries to move on in some way by going out with other people. In the end, it’s revealed Mary Jane was kidnapped by a stalker and Spider-Man was able to rescue her.

Mephisto Erased Their Marriage

The 2007 storyline “One More Day” became one of the darkest Spider-Man comic book stories ever when Mephisto erased the marriage of Peter Parker and Mary Jane from existence. After an attack by the Kingpin left Aunt May mortally wounded, the couple decided to trade their marriage for May’s continued survival.

The storyline ended with the pair’s marriage never having occurred, complicating 20 years of continuity at that point and leaving them separated. They have since become romantically involved again, though they remain unmarried in the current continuity.

They Were Married In The Comic Strip

Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson have lost their marriage in the comics, but they remain married in The Amazing Spider-Man daily comic strip, which ended its 42-year run in 2019. The comic strip, which began in 1977, had a completely different continuity than the comic books, though it did also feature the duo’s 1987 wedding.

The comic strip did attempt to adapt “Brand New Day,” which erased the marriage of Peter and Mary Jane, but it was then later established the entire story had been a nightmare. This left the two married and together right up to the very last panel of the comic strip.
