10 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About SpiderMan & Venoms Rivalry

Venom is returning soon to the big screen in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but he’s yet to face his greatest nemesis Spider-Man in the MCU or his own solo movies. Comic books fans know this is one of the greatest and most complex rivalries in modern comics, going back to in many ways to the original 1985 Secret Wars Marvel crossover event.

They’ve been pitched enemies ever since, even as the symbiote has grafted onto other characters besides Eddie Brock. They’ve also been partners on occasion, but those moments have been few and far between. Their rivalry extends even into the multiverse, where alternate versions of the two characters continue their battle in different forms.

10 The Fantastic Four Saved Spider-Man From Becoming Venom

10 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About SpiderMan & Venoms Rivalry

Before Venom came on the scene, the Fantastic Four helped untangle the aggressive symbiote from Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man #256. Comic book fans know Reed Richards is one of the smartest people in the Marvel Universe, and he used his intellect to pry the alien loose.

The Human Torch used his flames to stop the symbiote from escaping and they were able to place it in a special containment field. But the symbiote escaped and sought revenge against Spider-Man, leading to his eventual bonding with the reporter Eddie Brock.

9 He Bonds With It To Stop Red Goblin

Peter Parker escaped bonding with the symbiote in the 80s, but many years later, he willingly bonded with the alien to fight against the Red Goblin. The Red Goblin is a frightening amalgamation of the Carnage symbiote and the Green Goblin, Norman Osborn.

After Red Goblin kills Flash Thompson (who had been the host of the Venom symbiote), Peter bonds with the symbiote and fights his old nemesis. In the end, it’s Peter Parker leaving the symbiote and challenging Osborn to do the same that brings an end to the conflict.

8 “Spewing Venom”

10 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About SpiderMan & Venoms Rivalry

Venom emerges when the symbiote attaches to Eddie Brock, a disgraced reporter whose stories on the Sin-Eater killer were proven false. His anger at Spider-Man, who captured the real killer, manifests in Brock telling him he now ‘spews venom’ as a tabloid reporter. It’s the only work that Brock can get now that newspapers won’t touch him.

Venom becomes the name of the fused beings of Eddie Brock and the symbiote as they merge their respective vendettas against Spider-Man into one ugly crusade against him.

7 Immune To Spider-Sense

10 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About SpiderMan & Venoms Rivalry

Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense is one of his greatest abilities, allowing him to anticipate threats and avoid them. Because the alien symbiote was bonded to Peter Parker for so long, it gleaned many of his powers and immunity to his Spider-Sense. This makes Venom one of Spider-Man’s most threatening villains.

Before Venom fully revealed himself to Peter Parker, he shoved him off a subway train platform in Web of Spider-Man #18. This action took Parker completely by surprise and he didn’t sense anything was wrong until it was nearly too late.

6 Venom Has A Kind Of Spider-Sense

Though Spider-Man can’t see Venom coming, Venom can detect him. This isn’t a Spider-Sense necessarily, but an extrasensory perception native to the alien symbiote. Making matters worse is the fact that this perception is much more comprehensive and quicker than Peter Parker’s Spider-Sense, giving Venom the jump on virtually every opponent.

This makes battles between Venom and Spider-Man particularly fraught because Venom effectively has every advantage over Spider-Man, outside of a few key weaknesses.

5 Venom Is Stronger

10 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About SpiderMan & Venoms Rivalry

Venom is one of Spider-Man’s best villains, and he’s also one of the strongest Spider-Man villains in the comics. Something casual fans may not realize is that he’s actually stronger than Spider-Man.

Eddie Brock is naturally very strong as he’s very into weight lifting, and the Venom symbiote possesses an alien physiology that exceeds that of Peter Parker, even with his Spider-powers. This was evident in the first battle and in issues #374 and 375 of The Amazing Spider-Man when Venom simply caught Spider-Man’s fist in mid-air.

4 Unlikely Allies

10 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About SpiderMan & Venoms Rivalry

Though Venom and Spider-Man are bitter rivals, they have put aside the differences on occasion. The first major truce occurred in the “Lethal Protector” mini-series from the 90s, one of the best Venom comic book story arcs.

Spider-Man and Venom agree to stay out of each other’s way after Spider-Man saves the life of Eddie Brock’s ex-wife, Anne Weying. Venom also teamed up with Spider-Man to take down Carnage, a spawn of the Venom symbiote, after he goes on a horrific killing spree in the Maximum Carnage comic crossover.

3 Ultimate Experiment

The rivalry between Spider-Man and Venom takes on different dimensions in other realities in the Marvel multiverse. In the Ultimate Comics universe of Earth-1610, the rivalry is even more personal, as the Venom symbiote is actually a scientific experiment created by Peter Parker’s father Richard and Eddie Brock Sr.

Peter and Eddie Brock are also childhood friends in this alternate reality, making the tragic turn of events – which includes the murder of Betty Brandt at the hands of Venom – all the more so.

2 Ven#m Vs. SP//DR

10 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About SpiderMan & Venoms Rivalry

Another unique iteration of Venom and Spider-Man’s rivalry from the multiverse exists in Earth-14512. In this reality. Spider-Man is SP//DR, a mech suit of armor worn by Peni Parker and Venom is VEN#M, a later version of that suit.

The VEN#M suit began assimilating its user, Addy Brock, after being installed with an experimental Sym Engine. This take on the long-standing enmity between the two characters could very appear on screen, especially in the sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, should Peni Parker reappear.

1 Spider-Man Had To Fake His Death

The conflict between Venom and Spider-Man has been so dangerous that at one point, Peter Parker had to fake his own death to get away from the villain.

In The Amazing Spider-Man #347 from 1991, a major battle between the two goes down a deserted island. Outmatched and afraid that Venom will take the fight to his loved ones, Peter Parker takes the extreme measure of planting his torn costume on a skeleton. This does work, and for a time at least. Venom believes that he has succeeded in killing his most hated foe.
