10 Things Only SpiderMan Comic Book Fans Know About The Lizard

The latest trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed that one of the many villains returning for the movie is The Lizard. Dr. Curt Connors has appeared in numerous Spider-Man movies, with this version being from The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield. Despite his many screen appearances, there is still a lot only comic book fans know about The Lizard.

The Lizard is one of Spider-Man’s classic early villains and has been both a major antagonist and ally over the years. A member of some incarnations of the Sinister Six, he’s deeply connected to many Spider-Man-related characters, including Morbius. That likely means fans will be seeing more of him on screen beyond the new movie.

10 One Of The First Spider-Man Villains Outside NYC

The vast majority of Spider-Man’s villains are located inside New York City, as the young and perpetually broke Spider-Man initially didn’t travel much beyond the city. That changed with The Lizard, who Spider-Man had to track down in Florida. Dr. Curt Connors had traveled there as part of his research into reptiles.

Spider-Man encountered him while on a trip for The Daily Bugle investigating reports of a lizard-like creature in The Amazing Spider-Man #6, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Steve Ditko back in 1963.

9 Limb Regeneration

The purpose of Dr. Connor’s visit to Florida was to explore reptilian limb regeneration. He pursued the idea of applying it to human limb regeneration due to the loss of his arm while he was in the military. Connors’ efforts to replicate limb regeneration in humans was a success, growing himself a new arm, but it also turned him into The Lizard.

The Lizard has superhuman strength, stamina, and speed. He can also communicate with other reptiles and even command them, making him one of the most powerful members of the Sinister Six.

8 Jekyll And Hyde

The process of becoming The Lizard also resulted in a strange Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde persona for Connors. Somewhat like the Hulk, any kind of stress or pain would transform Connors into The Lizard. The Lizard personality was much more animalistic and aggressive, though in some stories, he is as intelligent and calculating as Connors.

Connors and The Lizard would war over control of their body for many years, with Connors ultimately gaining the upper hand. He would lose it on occasion, mostly due to the interference of other villains, particularly Calypso, who used magic on him.

7 Helped Spider-Man Fight The Rhino

The Lizard has been an unwilling villain from the start, with Connors fighting The Lizard persona. That has led to The Lizard helping Spider-Man on some occasions. One of the biggest was helping him defeat The Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man #45.

Connors helped Spider-Man take down one of the most underrated members of the Sinister Six with a special formula that weakened Rhino’s otherwise invulnerable hyde. It was successful, but Connors became The Lizard again as a result.

6 Caused Spider-Man To Grow Extra Arms

The Lizard is also responsible for one of the strongest versions of Spider-Man in Marvel Comics. A battle with The Lizard to help Connors regain his humanity had the opposite effect and Peter Parker grew an extra set of limbs thanks to exposure to Connors’ formula.

The six-arm Spider-Man appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #100-102 and has since been adapted into other media, including Spider-Man The Animated Series. He’s also been made into an action figure numerous times by both Toy Biz and Hasbro.

5 Morbius Helped Him Develop An Antidote

“The Six Arms Saga” is also key for involving Morbius, The Living Vampire, in what may be a forecast of MCU developments. Spider-Man is able to revert to normal, and Dr. Connors, too, thanks to a bite from Morbius. An enzyme present in Morbius’ blood allowed Connors to briefly reassert his human personality.

With the help of Morbius, Connors was able to develop a serum to stabilize himself and also help Peter Parker lose his arms. This could lead to a live-action team-up in the MCU, with The Lizard now crossing over into the franchise.

4 Wouldn’t Fight In Secret Wars

A major example of Dr. Connors’ lack of ambition as a supervillain occurred in the first Secret Wars crossover from 1985. The Lizard was transported to Battleworld by The Beyonder along with nearly every other major supervillain and superhero in Marvel Comics. While the villains all conspired to take control, The Lizard chose not to fight at all.

He would get involved in Secret Wars #7 when the Wrecking Crew killed The Wasp. Connors had befriended Janet Van Dyne on Battleworld, who treated his injuries after the first major battle.

3 Helped Create Ultimate Carnage

Like with most major Spider-Man villains, there are many variants of The Lizard throughout the Marvel multiverse. One of the most important is in the Ultimate Comics universe of Earth-1610. There, he actually creates an even worse villain in the form of Ultimate Carnage.

He accidentally created Carnage using DNA from the Ultimate Spider-Man, which was an extension of the work Richard Parker, Peter’s father did, in creating the Venom symbiote in this alternate reality.

2 The Second Lizard

Another version of The Lizard exists in Earth-616. Billy Connors, Dr. Connors’ son, eventually gained the powers of The Lizard after a long and tragic sequence of events. Billy initially got cancer from exposure to toxic chemicals from a lab where Dr. Connors worked.

His mother died, but Billy lived and was eventually mutated into a form of The Lizard. Billy Connors could change back and forth from The Lizard at will, something his father long struggled to do, allowing Billy to live a somewhat normal life.

1 Spider-Man Becomes The Lizard

Comic book fans know Spider-Gwen comes from the alternate universe of Earth-65. That reality’s version of The Lizard is actually Peter Parker. In her original reality, the radioactive spider bites Gwen and not Peter.

Hurt and angered by years of bullying by others, he takes drastic action and develops the serum that transforms into The Lizard. In a shocking twist, Spider-Gwen actually kills The Lizard after he attacks their school, and refuses to stop despite her begging him to.
