10 Things That Dont Make Any Sense In Netflixs The Bridge

The Netflix movie The Bridge is a Nigerian film with love at its center. A Yoruba prince falls in love with an ordinary girl, albeit who is rich, but, belongs to another tribe. The parents of both parties are against this marriage, which is why the love bugs run from their homes and marry each other with the support of their friends.

She purpose of this article is not to discourage anyone from watching the movie at all. On the contrary, it is a great watch, for it depicts the social stigma around love marriages and youths’ desire to choose partners independently and irrespective of their class or tribal differences, which some or the other way, still prevails in Nigeria. In spite of the great story and endearing characters and themes, not everything in the film makes sense. Here are 10 such things.

10 The Bridge

The movie has been titled The Bridge and throughout the movie, the bridge has only been shown twice. In the two instances when it was shown, the scenes are of not much consequence or importance to the main storyline. The bridge wasn’t really explored, talked about, or illustrated in any specific way.

There is no real significance of the structure either, in any form whatsoever, in the movie. The story mostly revolves around the love story and the aftermath of the two lovers, so the title seems a bit odd.

9 The Love Story

Stella seemed to have changed her mind about Obadare and their marriage, after a pep talk with her father, and visits Dare to inform about it. He tries to convince her into marrying him by saying that they have gone through so many things together that it would be a shame to part ways now.

What follows is a collage of a few flashbacks, all repetitive, showing one or the other was sick or hurt and they took care of each other. Although it’s heartwarming, it does not portray the desired effect. It rather looks kind of shallow.

8 Augustine’s Behavior

When Augustine heard Stella saying “Love you too,” and teased her about it, why didn’t he tell her that he liked her or confront her? He didn’t even inform about this to her father despite being apparently so loyal to him, as shown towards the end of the movie?

Instead, he just teased her about it, like friends do. And when she married Obadare, suddenly the lovebug bit him and he snapped, ready to do anything to win her over, which involved criminal activities to threaten her into coming back home and worse, trying to kill her husband after her death. He could have gone the civil way by requesting a thorough investigation or re-inquiry into the abrupt death.

7 Why Was Stella Behaving Weirdly When She Brought The King Home?

When Obadare brings his sick dad, King Adeyemi to Stella’s hospital, she recommends complete bed rest for a few days. Meanwhile, Obadare has to go for his special flight training for two days, so he requests her to make sure he stays in the hospital. He promises he would take him back as soon as he returns.

But, as soon as he leaves, the King feels something and forces her to take him back home. Throughout the ride, she behaves pretty strangely and cries occasionally. Olori, Obadare’s mother asks her to come inside and she looks like she doesn’t want to. This was never explained in the movie.

6 Why Was Stella Crying When She Was Leaving?

Unwantedly, Stella stays at her in-laws’ house. But she keeps behaving weirdly as if she were afraid of something. She could have called Obadare, but, she didn’t. She does not look like she is heading home either and midnight is not always a good time to drive a car alone through woods, anyways.

Since the moment she had brought her father-in-law home, she was either sulking or crying. And at midnight, she left the house, crying for a reason only she knew, and the director knew, who didn’t find it important to reveal to us.

5 What Was The Priest And His Fellows Doing Near The Ditch?

The priest and the fellow chiefs were very paranoid about the King not returning back to his homeland Sapati because it was the time of the year when they celebrate the cleansing festival. The tradition was that the King had to inaugurate and set it in motion.

When they see that he hadn’t returned yet despite their repeated requests, they resolve to not let it affect their protests. The creepy part starts here. Just when Stella recalls a glimpse of the priest and leaves from the house, the priest and the other chiefs are also out on the road, walking towards the same spot where Stella hits her car, shortly before dying on the spot.

4 Why Did Obadare Behave So Normally?

When Obadare returns from his special flight training, he doesn’t find his father, the king, or Stella in the hospital. Naturally, he calls his parents. Olori picks up and tells him that she is there, at their house. When Obadare reaches home he doesn’t find her there and runs into his father, crying mother and the chiefs, sitting with their heads bowed down.

His father tells him that Stella is dead. He is not told any details about her death or any circumstances surrounding the event, but instead, he just assumes that their evil God claimed his Stella. His response seems so ridiculous and nonsense. Why did he accept her death so normally? Why didn’t he enquire much about Stella’s death?

3 Why Does Obadare Want To Go To His In-Laws

When Obadare is informed about Stella’s death, he doesn’t ask how or why. He says he does not understand and asks them to tell him, but, no one responds. He does not press for an answer. In a fit of rage, he destroys their place of worship, the shrine, and their God.

After that, instead of visiting her, he sets out with Jire to inform her parents about Stella’s death. He seems over-eager and all over the place about the news, and doesn’t even once stop to think what her parents will make of it when they learn that she died.

2 Why Didn’t They Kill Him When Police Came Looking For Him?

When Obadare goes to Stella’s house with Jire, to break the news to them, her father lets him go after hearing of it. He again comes back to the house with the body, this time alone. As soon as they confirm that the body is in the van, Augustine and his men capture Obadare and kidnap him.

They take him to the woods where Augustine buries him alive inside a nailed coffin. He then asks his men to kill him immediately if any police or king’s men happen to sniff or snoop at the place. Sooner rather than later, police do arrive and instead of killing, admit to kidnapping him and point them to the coffin.

1 Why Did Stella’s Family Not Enquire Much About The Details?

They looked like they accepted the death way too easily. Her mother started crying, her father asked for her body for the funeral. They don’t ask much about how she died so abruptly and where was Obadare when this all happened. They don’t even wait for the police to investigate, or to look into the circumstances of her death, or send the body to the forensics.

They seem to be in a hurry to do the final rites, and seeing the end, probably to avenge her death by kidnapping and killing Obadare, in lieu. Any way you see it, they took her death as if it were coming or inevitable!
