10 Things That Make No Sense About A Cinderella Story (2004)

Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray lead the cast of the 2004 modern adaption of Cinderella, called A Cinderella Story. The film took the classic characters and placed them into a contemporary world. Rather than a kingdom with Kings and Queens, it’s a tale of high school jocks and nerds. Since then, several other modern adaptions have been made.

A Cinderella Story was beloved by fans. However, specific details have been called out for years by fans. Not everything in the film made sense, and some things stuck out more than others.

10 Sam Didn’t Care She Lost Her Phone

10 Things That Make No Sense About A Cinderella Story (2004)

A person’s cell phone may not have been as essential to their daily life in 2004, but it certainly was a possession Sam would notice she lost. Except, Sam doesn’t appear to realize or care that she had lost her phone at the dance. There are mentions of texts Sam was getting when Austin had her phone that doesn’t get talked about with Sam.

If the movie took place today, odds are Sam would’ve swallowed her pride and shyness to ask Austin for her phone back. Yet, even after Sam’s identity is revealed, she never confronts him to return her phone.

9 Austin Took A Long Time To Return Sam’s Phone

10 Things That Make No Sense About A Cinderella Story (2004)

When Sam went running from the dance, Austin had picked up her phone. Knowing that Austin had her phone, he likely could have just asked around if anyone had lost a phone recently. During Austin’s search for Cinderella, he holds on to Sam’s phone but is unable to unlock it to narrow down her identity. However, when Austin discovers Sam was Cinderella, he avoids her. Still, Austin held onto Sam’s cell phone and did not take the time to return it.

Regardless of how Austin was feeling about Sam being Princeton Girl, Austin still should have returned her property. It isn’t until the two were driving to Princeton together that Austin gives Sam her phone back.

8 Sam’s Disguise

10 Things That Make No Sense About A Cinderella Story (2004)

Sam’s disguise is a dress and a thin mask. Otherwise, Sam pretty much looks like herself. Even if her hair is done a little differently, everything else about her remains the same. However, nobody recognizes her. Sam’s appearance at the dance is a shock to the entire student body as they don’t know who this girl is.

Even Sam’s step-sisters can’t place Sam as being the same girl they grew up with. Austin spent a decent part of the night staring at Sam, yet even when he looks directly at her in later parts of the movie, Austin can’t make the connection.

7 The Earthquake

Sam’s father tragically dies during an earthquake. However, his death is not captured on film, and the movie jumps to Sam moving into the attic. Sam’s father had left Sam in her room to check on Fiona.

In the end, he is the only one to pass away during the natural disaster. It is never specified how he dies or what kills him.

6 Who Is Cinderella?

Between speaking to Princeton Girl and meeting Cinderella at the dance, Austin was falling for Sam. However, Austin’s struggle is narrowing down which girl he spent time with at the dance.

Austin speaks with several girls, and while Austin seems to know who is not Cinderella, it doesn’t even occur to him that Sam has a resemblance in her voice, height, and appearance, to the girl he danced with.

5 The Marriage

Sam spoke of the close relationship she had with her father. Then, he and Fiona met at the diner and later got married. However, even as early as their wedding, Fiona proved herself to be an awful person.

She purposely dropped flowers, knowing Sam would lean down to pick them up, and be left out of the family wedding photo. However, Sam’s father was never shown to argue the decision or see the photograph. He must have noticed how Fiona treated Sam, and their marriage did not make sense.

4 Sam Was Laughed At For The Letters

10 Things That Make No Sense About A Cinderella Story (2004)

Shelby, Sam’s step-sisters, and the other cheerleaders made a mockery out of Sam and Austin’s correspondence by reading their messages to each other out loud for the entire school to hear.

By doing so, they put on a play and revealed Sam to be Princeton Girl. Afterward, everyone laughs at Sam, making fun of her at school. However, no one makes Austin feel bad about anything.

3 Austin Seemed Betrayed

10 Things That Make No Sense About A Cinderella Story (2004)

Austin searched everywhere for Cinderella’s identity only for Shelby to reveal to everyone that it was Sam. While Austin is certainly not happy with Shelby, he also appears uncomfortable about Sam. To a degree, it makes sense.

Having personal business be read aloud to the entire student body must not have been easy, and since Austin and Sam had little to do with each other outside of their messages, he probably didn’t know how to speak to her. However, there are moments where Austin appears to be avoiding her anyway.

2 Princeton

10 Things That Make No Sense About A Cinderella Story (2004)

Sam and Austin share a desire to attend Princeton after high school. But, while Austin wishes to be a writer, Sam’s ambition comes from Princeton being the college she discussed with her father before his death.

Sam is academically bright enough to graduate early from high school, but there are no hints about what she wants to specialize in at college. Even if Sam herself is not aware yet, it would have added more to her motivation to go to Princeton.

1 The Will

Sam’s father had made a will before he died. The will wasn’t mentioned to Sam as a child and is not relevant until the end of the movie. In a fit of sadness, Sam threw a childhood book across the room, and the will fell out. Why the will was hidden in that book is never answered. It was an unlikely place to hide a will.

Perhaps, that’s why he placed it there, but the question also remains in when Sam’s father would have put his will in the book. However, the will does reveal that the house, cars, and money all belonged to Sam.
