10 Things That Make No Sense About Dragon’s Dogma On Netflix

Anyone who has ever played the Dragon’s Dogma video game will surely note plenty of things that don’t make a lick of logical sense in either the story or the lore. After all, the video game’s main strength is its unique combat and novel sense of grand adventure that even most RPGs can’t match. Sadly, lots of things that don’t make sense in the game have carried over to the anime adaptation.

Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma follows the video game closely– including its mistakes and even introduces its own oversights to the show. There were many instances in the anime that would definitely make the viewers raise their eyebrows in question regardless of whether they’ve played the game or not. Here 10 examples of those.

10 HOW WAS THE HYDRA’S VICTIM STILL ALIVE

10 Things That Make No Sense About Dragon’s Dogma On Netflix

Usually, getting swallowed by a python or a boa constrictor is a death sentence since there is no breathable air inside another living organism. Even the fluids alone would be enough to suffocate anyone inside. Why is this relevant? Because the hydra in Dragon’s Dogma is pretty much just a four-headed boa constrictor that regenerates like a mutant.

Even in the game, the players mostly have several seconds to break free after being swallowed whole before they become fat reserves for the hydra. So how come Lennie, the hardworking girl in episode four was still alive after being covered in hydra stomach acids? Storywise, her death wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the episode anyway.

9 THE RIOT DIDN’T MAKE SENSE

Another thing that wouldn’t have affected the story much would be the riot in episode two. After saving a whole random town from a cyclops, the populace of the settlement rose up and swept through the city stealing all the food that they can eat.

However, it didn’t even seem like the leader of that town had much of an army. He even barely had thugs. With the number of men he has, the hungry villagers could have easily taken over and established new leadership. They certainly took over quite easily as soon as they found out that the former town leader was controlling the cyclops…

8 HOW DID THEY CONTROL THE CYCLOPS?

Speaking of which, the cyclops is easily one of the most menacing enemies in the game and certainly has the same reputation in the anime. Then suddenly it didn’t because the show revealed that it was nothing more than a circus pet for the corrupt town leader in episode two. To add insult to injury, it was being controlled with nothing but a mere whip.

What’s weird is that that same cyclops can endure being poked with a razor-sharp sword or punctured by a magical arrow. Suddenly it’s scared by a whip? Besides, seeing as the cyclops is only scared of the person holding the whip, would that make the other thugs a target?

7 WHY DIDN’T THEY JUST DESTROY THE UNDEAD CHURCH?

The undead, particularly reanimated skeletons in Dragon’s Dogma weren’t really well-explained in the lore. That’s why the show took some bold moves when it revealed that they’re easily killed with sunlight, including their lich and source.

In fact, even the common soldiers have seen just how scared of sunlight the skeleton warriors are in episode five. That’s why it was rather odd that Hannah seems to be the only one among them with a knack for tactics. If they wanted to eradicate the lich so badly, they could have just burned down the whole church or took it apart piece by piece to expose the crypts to the sunlight. That would have saved countless lives and insurance money for the soldiers’ families.

6 CHARACTERS SUDDENLY GOING INSANE

Character development is never the strength of Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma. Even Ethan’s descent into vengeful madness was unconvincing and rushed. Too bad the other characters of the anime share this same clunky level of abrupt personality change.

The most notable example of this was in episode three when Theo killed Elizabeth in what appears to be a bout of temporary insanity which is rather dubious. Then there’s Balthazar going mad and killing Simon needlessly after lusting for gold and status. One might reason out that the gold was cursed but in that case why wasn’t Simon nor Ethan affected as well?

5 WHAT EXACTLY IS HANNAH’S RPG CLASS?

Hannah is quite a wildcard when it comes to her powers and even those who have played the game will be baffled at what exactly she is according to the lore. The primary inference is that she could be a Magick Archer given her proficiency with a bow and magical arrows. However, she can also cast Anodyne, which is the healing spell in the game and is also shown to wield a staff in one episode.

For those who have never played the game, Hannah simply appears to be an everywoman capable of anything while Ethan is just a blunt swordsman. As for fans of the game, Hannah is most definitely a cheater who has found a way to multiclass and fill in for the roles of three pawns.

In episode four, viewers get quite an unprecedented piece of news in the form of knowing that Hannah, Ethan’s one-and-only pawn, actually can’t be killed. Well, she can be, but she just revives after a few minutes. Apparently, that’s how pawns work and it’s somewhat the same in the game where the pawns really can’t die if their Arisen is still alive.

That pretty much makes Hannah an unkillable multi–classer who can pretty much become an empress if she wanted or if her Arisen ordered her. How and why Ethan never thought of letting Hannah do all the work since she virtually can’t die is just poor thinking. Then again, that’s not the only bad decision he’s made in the anime…

3 WHY DIDN’T ETHAN JUST BECOME A RANGER?

10 Things That Make No Sense About Dragon’s Dogma On Netflix

In the first episode of the anime, it’s pretty clear that Ethan hunts for a living and is actually proficient with a bow and arrow already. So when the dragon attacked Cassardis and give him a soft rebirth, it’s only rational for him to assume a ranged RPG role such as a Ranger. After all, he wouldn’t want to waste that marksmanship of his, right?

Too bad he chose to ignore his strengths and picked up a sword. That would have been fine if he was actually great with it but he mostly just bumbles around with the sword and Hannah does most of the heavy lifting. The thing is, fighting a dragon also would have been so much easier with a ranged weapon instead of a measly sword.

2 ETHAN’S WEAPONS

Speaking of swords, it’s clear that the dragon is impervious to steel. That was apparent enough in the first episode when steel-tipped arrows and spears just get through its skin. After that, Ethan visibly picked up a sword of the same quality made for the same soldiers who fought the dragon and failed.

He then went on to use this sword against the dragon and even managed to slice it open with what appears to be the same sword. It could be argued that he aimed for the dragon’s underbelly but then again, the soldiers of Cassardis also probably did that and failed. Perhaps Ethan was an exception because he was an Arisen? Or perhaps the dragon let Ethan kill him?

1 WHY THE DRAGON HAD TO FIGHT ETHAN

The dragon’s goals and motivations have always been questionable in Dragon’s Dogma. The anime is no exception and even managed to make the plot more confusing. Turns out the dragon was but a creature of instinct but also had the wisdom to judge and anoint a potential Arisen candidate– one that could replace him.

So, the whole picking the Arisen gig was just a suicide method since the dragon was fed up with its being. In that case, why the need to fight, flee, and resist the Arisen? Why couldn’t it just let the Arisen stab him the moment they see each other again. It would have resulted in a less epic finale but if the price of that action-packed ending is logic, then maybe a re-evaluation of storytelling priorities is in order?
