Released in 1989, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan was very lowly rated by both fans and critics, even for the frequently-maligned franchise’s own set of low standards, and it’s not exactly difficult to see why.

Though full of its own fun kind of personality, and revolving around new locations for the series to try and make things a bit more fresh, Jason Takes Manhattan is full of moments that simply don’t make sense by any stretch of even the most forgiving fan’s imagination.

10 The Overall Premise

Deciding to place the bulk of the action on a boat makes enough sense to a slasher fan. It’s an interesting but still somewhat claustrophobic environment to stage some kills in that keeps the budget fittingly low.

What doesn’t make sense is the movie’s excuses for why the story goes there. How anybody decides that an–even for the late 80s–old-timey boat trip is the most practical way of getting to New York City–or an enjoyable reward for adolescent kids–is a bit baffling. Then there’s how the killer fits into it…

9 Jason’s Motivation

Jason isn’t exactly a people person, this much fans know for sure. He’s also generally not fond of teens. But, up until this point in the franchise, the movies all take place at Crystal Lake, or thereabouts, so it makes sense why Jason attacks people.

Being the place where he was drowned and where his mother was killed, he obviously feels territorial. But what does he have against the kids on the boat? Why did he even travel there? Why leave? If he’s just on a random rampage then why ignore so many other people when he gets to the city? It makes no sense.

8 How Many Students Are There Exactly?

Obviously, the movie needs a core cast of kids and even-more-disposable adults, as is the norm in the slasher genre. But how many kids does Jason even kill in this movie?

The audience never really sees all of the kids collected together on the boat or even really has an idea of how many there are on the boat, even roughly. Only a handful of survivors make it off the boat before it sinks and the swathes of background extras seen in some early shots are never seen or spoken of again.

7 Jason’s Mask

Jason’s iconic hockey mask is destroyed during the finale of Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, so Jason Takes Manhattan has to find a way of getting him a new one at the beginning.

It’s reasonable enough to assume that a vaguely jock-ish teenager could have a hockey mask on his houseboat. It’s not so easy to see why but, within the tenuous logic of slasher movies, sure. Fine. But what you can’t really explain away is how or why that random hockey mask has a chip in the exact same spot that Jason’s original mask got in Part III.

6 Jason’s Perfect Fingers

Even if you hadn’t seen any of the previous movies in the franchise before Part VIII, it’s established from the beginning that Jason has been dead for some time now and has his corpse once again reanimated by a sudden jolt of electricity.

The movie frequently makes sure to show the audience that the killer has become a decaying, slimy, husk of a body yet, as he climbs out of the water after returning to life, a close-up of his hands grabbing the railing of the boat shows that the fingers beneath his gloves are perfect and pink compared to the greyish-green of the rest of his decayed skin.

5 Unrealistic Parental Expectations

Near the beginning of the movie, it’s established that the captain of the boat is one of the students’ fathers in an awkward moment where they attempt to take the boat out together.

The boy’s father is bitterly disappointed that his son can’t follow basic maritime protocol but why would he assume that his son knew how to do this in the first place? He displays no interest in boating and seems as confused as the audience during the bizarre scene.

4 J.J. the Guitar Girl

There’s a lot of distinct 80s style going on in Jason Takes Manhattan but nothing is quite as egregiously dated as J.J., the girl whose entire identity revolves around her electric guitar.

This in and of itself is not something so outlandish, though it does beg the question of whether she intends to lug it around with her everywhere she goes through New York City. But the part that really doesn’t make sense is how she manages to keep playing the instrument loudly and proudly all over the ship, in studio-level sound quality, when it appears to be plugged into not much more than a boombox. Then again, this is a universe where the best acoustics are to be found in a cruise ship’s functioning engine room.

3 Jason’s Teleportation Powers

Jason, having been killed numerous times by this point and walking around as a decaying corpse, is quite clearly a supernatural force that isn’t bound by the rules of normal reality.

However, his ability to appear exactly where he needs to be is pushed far beyond reasonable limits in Jason Takes Manhattan and the killer is shown to effectively teleport in an instant to catch up to his victims or cut them off in ways that are really just kind of funny.

2 Jason’s Transformation

Just when the rules surrounding Jason couldn’t be any more confusing, the movie decides to flip everything upside down just one more time during the climax.

After the final survivors evade Jason in the sewers of Manhattan, which are apparently flooded every single night like clockwork with deadly toxic waste (just go with it), the killer is melted by a wave of corrosive chemicals and all that remains of him is a pure boy-like form left on the floor. Is this a ghost? A hallucination of some kind? Is he real? Where does he go? The kids just leave and the next time audiences see Jason, he’s back to his old self in Jason Goes to Hell.

1 The Title

The biggest thing about Jason Takes Manhattan that makes no sense is, of course, the title itself. It’s easy to see why the movie doesn’t even arrive in Manhattan until past the hour mark (it was the cheaper option) but how exactly does Jason ‘take’ the city?

He really doesn’t do much of anything once he gets there and even gives many New Yorkers an uncharacteristic pass. Is it a reference to the 1984 movie The Muppets Take Manhattan? Was this really the best title that anyone involved could come up with?
