10 Things That Make No Sense About The SpongeBob Movie Sponge On The Run

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run has been out for over half a year in international markets, but American fans of the classic Nickelodeon character might be surprised to learn that it’s available now on Paramount Plus. That’s right, the third film in the movie franchise based on SpongeBob SquarePants exists and is available in the world. Yet, it seems like it’s garnered 1/1,000th of the buzz the first movie generated way back in 2004.

Granted, SpongeBob is a shell of its former self and with the loss of creator Stephen Hillenburg, any hope of recapturing that early-2000s magic seems long gone. Some viewed the new film as a major disappointment a big reason why is that a lot of it didn’t make much sense.

10 The Title

When the third film was initially conceived, it was slated to be called It’s a Wonderful Sponge, an obvious play on the classic Christmas film. However, this title was eventually scrapped in favor of Sponge on the Run, when the story shifted from a Bikini Bottom origin to a Gary rescue mission.

Still, the new title makes absolutely no sense. SpongeBob isn’t on the run from anyone. So, he’s actually going towards something intentionally.

9 Sandy’s Inventiveness

Throughout the Spongebob series, Sandy is a guitar player, a karate chopper, and a loyal friend. But it was never once established that she was capable of science on the same level that Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are.

Yes, Sandy is smart, but she legitimately creates artificial intelligence in just a few seconds in this movie. There’s no reason for it to be Sandy either. She just happens to show up at the Krusty Krab with a robot.

8 Snail Extinction

King Poseidon, a character who’s never appeared in SpongeBob before, drives the plot forward by kidnapping nearly extinct snails and using their slime to keep himself looking young and energetic.

First of all, none of the characters on SpongeBob ever age. Secondly, hoarding the snails because they’re almost extinct doesn’t make sense. It’s feels lazy to throw that out there to make a character with shaky motivations somewhat function as a plot device.

7 “Have You Seen This Snail?”

This isn’t even the laziest aspect of Sponge on the Run, though. What truly makes no sense is how this same story could happen to SpongeBob again without him seeming to learn anything from it the first time.

The season four SpongeBob episode, “Have You Seen This Snail?” chronicles the story of someone seizing Gary for their own selfish desires and SpongeBob searching for his pet snail. In another fifteen years, perhaps SpongeBob will learn the loyalty lesson a third time because it makes no sense that a pet snail would be such a channeled commodity in the undersea world.

6 Dream Sequence

In the middle stage of SpongeBob and Patrick’s hero journey, they make their way to a tavern where they free ghost pirates by shining sunlight on a metaphysical spirit after Snoop Dogg performs a musical number.

Fortunately, the utter nonsense is alleviated by the reveal that this moment was merely a dream sequence. Still, some key story beats are introduced in the dream that have an impact on the rest of the story. There’s no way this could even be possible.

5 Sage Still?

One significant element of the dream sequence that makes no sense is Sage, the tumbleweed played by Keanu Reeves. Yes, that alone makes no sense, but it’s the impact Sage has on the story that is the most ludicrous.

He genuinely changes character arcs in the film and yet, he’s a tangible aspect of the dream sequence. But also Sage has a metaphysical awareness of dreaming? Yes, Patrick is a starfish that talks, but the tumbleweed is just too much.

4 Road Trip Redux

Returning to characters who seem to learn nothing from their previous adventures, SpongeBob and Patrick essentially follow the same character arcs from the first film, even down to the fact that their backdrop is a road trip.

SpongeBob’s ultimate character growth is to learn that he possesses courage within. It makes no sense that he would suddenly forget that when the creative staff has gone to great lengths in the past to show that he realizes it endlessly.

3 Plankton’s Motives

Of course, it’s Plankton’s arc that is the biggest offender of sense. One does not even need to journey back to the first film to see what makes the least sense about Plankton’s Sponge on the Run journey.

In fact, the second film spends most of its time reckoning with Plankton’s future in the franchise. Could he ever be wholly good? Probably not. But it makes zero sense why he would be trusted by anyone after this umpteenth betrayal before realizing he was wrong – just like Sponge out of Water.

2 Friendship Origins

10 Things That Make No Sense About The SpongeBob Movie Sponge On The Run

The major emotional climax of Sponge on the Run centers on a series of speeches from the characters, as they reminisce about when they first met SpongeBob as kids at Kamp Koral.

There is not one aspect of this that makes sense. For one, SpongeBob’s initial relationships with all the characters were established as early as 1999, when he meets Sandy for the first time. It’s an unnecessary retcon that doesn’t hold up to an ounce of scrutiny.

1 Backdoor Pilot

The part that makes the least sense about this sequence is that it essentially serves the function of marketing the SpongeBob spin-off as a backdoor pilot. Taking place at Kamp Koral, the spin-off is the Nickelodeon equivalent of Muppet Babies.

What makes the least sense is why they would do this at all, considering Hillenburg did not want a spin-off of the show. Not only did Nickelodeon go against his creative vision of continuity, but they also waited until he passed to greenlight a cash grab.
