It’s been almost a year since Jailbirds first premiered on Netflix. The docu-style ‘drama’ following the lives of female and male inmates of the Sacramento County Jail gave the audience a ‘real’ account of life behind bars. With the inclusion of unique prison experiences such as “talking through the bowl” and “making pruno,” Jailbirds reignited our passion for prison-related content.
Though the renewal of a second season is yet to be announced, there is more fictional and nonfictional content available for you to watch if the prison-drama genre is your cup of tea. Here are ten things to watch if you liked Netflix’s Jailbirds.
10 Prisoner
Starting off with our list of fictional prison dramas is cult favorite Prisoner: Cell Block H also commonly known as Prisoner. This 1979 Australian soap opera, followed the lives of prisoners and staff within the Wentworth Detention Centre. The show was not only popular during this time but also considered to be both ‘controversial’ and groundbreaking due to its exposure to themes of feminism and homosexuality. Within its 7 year run, Prisoner became a hallmark in the prison drama genre. It can be said that the show opened doors for jail docu-series like Jailbirds. 9 Wentworth
Wentworth is the other prison drama that has diversified our understanding of on-screen prison life. Often thought of as the modern remake to ‘Prisoner’, Wentworth took the world by storm through its jarring, often cruel but more likely accurate depiction of life in prison. With a more in-depth look at the Australian prison system, prison hierarchies, and loyalty, you will not regret indulging yourself in the lives of women in the Wentworth Prison. You can catch seasons of Wentworth on Netflix if you are in the US and Amazon Prime and Google Play in other countries.
8 Orange Is The New Black
Arguably one of Netflix’s most popular shows, Orange Is The New Black (OITNB) is a must-watch for anyone with a fix for jail drama. Despite being fictional, OITNB was adored by fans for its unafraid and bold demonstration of the lives of women in prison.
With complex and diverse character arcs and storylines, OITNB was Netflix’s comedic, dramatic and nearing real-life take on the prison experience. Though fans had to say goodbye to the show almost a year ago now, OITNB will not only remain a Netflix drama powerhouse but a staple of prison dramas.
7 Locked Up
Often dubbed as the Spanish version of OITNB, Locked Up or ‘Vis a Vis’ provides you with an even more dramatic spin on life, both in and out of prison. In this show, you can expect the archetypal prison drama themes of murder and bribery accoupled with inhouse ‘docu-style’ type of filmmaking. Locked Up also spices things up by placing a treasure hunt at the forefront of the inmate’s conquests outside of jail. We won’t give you any more details because the show provides its own unique experience. Instead, we suggest you stream Locked Up on Amazon Prime as soon as possible.
6 Prison Break
Prison Break is a prison drama worth mentioning when looking at the prison drama genre. Easily considered to be one of the best TV shows of all time, this FOX favorite reminded everyone when it first aired in Summer 2005 why prison dramas were the best.
Following the lives of Michael Scofield, Lincoln Burrows and the Fox River escapees not only kept us on the edge of our seats but made us fear life within a male prison. Though its potential return for S6 is still up in the air, Prison Break is a must-watch if you like the prison-drama genre.
5 Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons
To start off our list of prison docu-series is Netflix’s: Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons. This 3 season documentary does exactly what it’s title bodes by taking us through some of the world’s toughest prisons. The show tackles themes of human rights, standards of hygiene and rule of law as well as ultimately uncovering different correctional justice approaches around the world.
From the walls of Honduras’ Danli Prison to Romania’s Gypsy Prison, the show provides audiences with a holistic and extensive view of the prison practices worldwide. Hosted by some of the world’s critically acclaimed journalists who take on the lives of prisoners to show us their conditions, this docuseries may be enough to deter you from committing any crime, ever.
4 I Am A Killer
Netflix’s I Am A Killer gives audiences a personal look into the lives of death row inmates. In this show, death row inmates explain the crimes they committed and how different jail is when on death row. Unlike other prison-based docu-series, I Am A Killer gives you solely the perspective of individuals who have spent a lot of their time in jail and experience a different prison life being on death row.
The show also recounts the ins and outs of prison crime and provides you with a detailed account of what the docu-series may not show you about prison life. With a show of this caliber, you can expect to get a more harrowing look into the minds of those that have called prison home and the crimes it took to get them there.
3 Happy Jail
By its title, you can expect some laughs watching this docuseries. Happy Jail by acclaimed director Michele Josue who follows the lives of the female and male inmates of Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC). The CPDRC is known as the prison harboring the famous “dancing inmates” who got worldwide attention in 2007 for their viral Michael Jackson Thriller dance video. On the surface, this series provides audiences with a warm-hearted look inside the joyous activity which unites and brings love and happiness to these inmates. However, the documentary also deals with the politics between prison and governmental control over the prison systems and the inequalities that arise as a result of such. A 5 episode Netflix limited series, Happy Jail makes for an educative and enjoyable watch.
2 First And Last
First and Last is a Netflix docu-series fitting of its name as it takes audiences through the first and last days of an inmate’s time at the pre-trial Georgia’s Gwinnett County Jail. The show features both male and female subjects, some as young as 18 years of age. What First and Last does differently from other prison-style dramas is that it extensively documents the emotions and experiences of individuals from the booking process, all the way to their last day in jail. From the nerves and fears of first arrests to the anxieties inmates face about the potential release, you can expect to see a more personal look into the processes of prison time.
1 Girls Incarcerated
Girls Incarcerated documents the lives of female juvenile offenders at the Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility in S1 and LaPorte Juvenile in S2. These facilities focused on the ‘rehabilitation and ‘schooling’ of the young female offenders preparing them for life outside of prison. The show is the most similar to jailbirds through its focus on young female offenders. However, unlike in Jailbirds, there is no toilet talking and easier access to making pruno as the restrictions are higher. Still, the show does provide you with the prison drama you may be still used to with clique and gang quarrels being evident. Girls Incarcerated allows you to look deeper into some of the preventative actions put in place by the system to allow young offenders to make their amends and in turn, choose a better life with life outside of prison.
