10 Things We Know About Westworld Season 4

Season 3 of HBO’s Westworld ended with a bang (literally) after 8 episodes that offered its fans a glimpse into the show creators’, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, imagined city of Los Angeles in the future, taking their audience out of the titular park, expanding the world, and escalating the scope of the story.

In the style of Westworld, the show left its fans with more questions than answers. With the introduction of new cast members and a farewell to older ones, nobody knows which direction will the series take into its projected upcoming seasons. That’s not to say there’s no information about what’s to come, so here’re ten things we know about season 4.

10 It’s Officially In The Works

On April 22, 2020, HBO officially announced that they ordered a fourth season of Westworld, effectively renovating the show. “From the western theme park to the technocratic metropolis of the near future, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed every twist and turn,” said HBO’s programming chief, Casey Bloys, in a statement. “We can’t wait to see where their inspired vision takes us next.”

Show’s creators and couple, Lisa Joy and Johanatan Nolan, had stated before their intentions to produce at least one more season to wrap up the story. Surely, fans will be eager to see what’s next.

9 A Different Aesthetic

Westworld’s season 3 marked a transition both in style and plot for the show. Moving its characters outside the titular park and into the “real world” was already a big change, but differences could also be seen in the way it was presented, increasing the fast-paced action and taking stylistic risks, like in the episode “Genre”.

Some fans have expressed dislike towards this direction but many others seem pleased with it. The truth is that the show will keep changing now that writers have proven capable of venturing into different aesthetics. As Nolan said to The Hollywood Reporter “…the idea that next season will feel different and distinct in genre from the previous seasons? Yes, that’s absolutely part of the structure of the show.”

8 Dolores Might Not Come Back

Dolores Abernathy, as fans knew her at the end of season 3, might not come back again. As shown in the season finale, Dolores dies while corrupting Rehoboam, declaring a previously unknown love for humanity and giving them a chance to fight the system. And that’s it, that was her story, as Nolan has pointed out.

Now, the audiences know that Dolores really didn’t go away. Just A Dolores. The other one still lives with a different body (the replica of Charlotte Hale) and has a new ideology.

7 Don’t Expect It Until 2022

This one is a rough one but an expected one. For a show with the scope Westworld has, it is not reasonable to expect a season every year. Between seasons two and three, almost two years had passed. However, an 18 to 20 month period of development and production may be longer this time.

If you factor in the pandemic that hit all over the world and halted Hollywood productions, it’s most likely that fans will not see a new season until 2022. “As Jonah and Lisa will tell you, I will always say, ‘Can we get it sooner?’” Casey Bloys told Variety. “As shows get bigger and more complicated, I think more time between seasons is probably becoming more of the norm.”

6 The Cast Will Be Back

The advantage of running a show about robots that can be replicated and mass-produced is that you can bring back actors, even if their character dies. That’s probably going to be Evan Rachel Wood’s case, who might come back as a guest appearance but not as Dolores.

This also happened in season 3. Fan favorites like Lawrence, interpreted by Clifton Collins Jr. and Clementine Pennyfeather, interpreted by Angela Sarafyan, made brief appearances, so is not farfetched to see familiar faces in the new season, apart from the established main characters.

5 Man In Black Is Going To Kill Everyone

Depending on who you’re asking, season 3 finale’s after credit scene might be the most awesome or the most disappointing. If you were a fan William as a character, you’re probably sad, but if you loved the Man In Black from season one, you’re probably rejoicing because of his comeback in host form.

In a panel for the Paley Center for Media, actors and showrunners sat down to discuss season 3 and what’s to come. In it, Nolan dropped this: “[William] winds up becoming this thing [a host] that he’s controlled for so long. And on a visceral level, I just can’t wait to watch Ed kill everyone.” Of course referring to Ed Harris character.

4 The Far Future

This one can be inferred from the actual finale of the season. Bernard, who is interpreted by Jeffrey Wright, discovers he has had the key to The Sublime all this time and connects to it via a futuristic headset seen before in season 2. His corporeal body falls asleep while he is connected.

After the main plot with Caleb and Maeve ends, audiences are shown Bernard again, sitting in the same spot where he connected to The Sublime. However, this time he appears to be covered by dust as if many years have passed while he was asleep, suggesting he wakes up in the far future, after looking who-knows-what in his robot afterlife.

3 Continuation Of Simpler Storytelling

One thing that was changed from season 2 to season 3 was the way writers decided to tell the story. Far are the days of two different time frames running simultaneously and cryptic flashforwards, as showrunners decided to streamline the plot through a very linear storyline.

This new direction might be the same for the upcoming season 4, as the scale of the show grows and the intentions of Nolan and Joy of experimenting with different genres will require a simpler plot for audiences to catch up to what is happening on the screen.

2 Return To The Parks

As the show may be wrapping up with its next season, it’s probable its characters will return to the genesis of their story: the Westworld park itself. As many storylines regarding the park haven’t been resolved (like Maeve’s reunion with her daughter) it’s safe to assume that Bernard and the others will return to that island.

Season 3 lacked in images of the parks, besides the virtual world Maeve was trapped in at the beginning of the season and a clumsy mission Bernard pulled off miraculously, in the dismantled park.

1 Jonathan Nolan And Lisa Joy Still Run The Show

In April 2019, Jonathan Nolan And Lisa Joy left their deal at Warner Bros. Television (parent company of HBO) for a five-year deal with Amazon. This was thought to be a departure of Westworld from HBO but was actually an opportunity to create a new project.

Casey Bloys said in an interview with The Wrap, “They are 100 percent hands-on. We have deals with them for a potential fourth and fifth season. So the deal with them [at Amazon] is for, I believe, everything but Westworld. And they’re very committed to Westworld. So I’m not worried about losing their focus. They don’t lose focus.”
