Fans of The Lord of the Rings will know about Aragorn, the kind ranger who becomes the King of Gondor. But here are little known facts about his past.

Everyone who has watched The Lord of the Rings knows about Aragorn, the kind ranger who soon shows why he deserves to become the King of Gondor and Arnor (and no, it’s not because of his genetic association with some bygone dynasty.) Elessar, as he is later titled, is a truly honorable character, and regularly plays second fiddle to more important roles in the narrative, like Frodo and Samwise, for example.
However, given that his past is shrouded in precautionary measures — to protect him against those who seek to end the line of Isildur — the Strider aspect of his personality requires a lot more clarification than it has received. Here are a few points that discuss Aragorn’s past.
10 His Name Was Originally Trotter
Before Aragorn, before even Strider, there was Trotter — the original name chosen by J.R.R. Tolkien for this character, mainly because of the way his wooden footwear generated a so-called “clitter-clap” rhythm while walking.
In fact, the author actually planned to keep Aragorn as a hobbit character, rather than a man (at one point considering the possibility that Bilbo was Aragorn in disguise), but this was thankfully changed later. Imagine an aura as powerful as his being associated with a name like Trotter!)
9 Strider Was Not Exactly Unknown
Strider sounds a lot better than Trotter, to be honest, but both these names were chosen to keep Aragorn’s identity a secret from audiences and characters alike.
Still, he was well-known around the western parts of Middle-earth, especially in the regions surrounding the Shire, as evidenced in Butterbur’s statement, “What his right name is I’ve never heard: but he’s known around here as Strider.” However, when he meets with Frodo and the others, he reveals himself to them (and subsequently everyone finds out, even Sauron.)
8 Gandalf Tasked Him With Protecting The Shire
Aragorn comprehends the absolute necessity of stopping the rise of Sauron, so when Gandalf and he strike up a friendship, he accepts his part in the larger game, even if it means allowing others to do the major task. He takes a group of Rangers (also known as the Dunedain, or the descendants of the Numenorean immigrants to Middle-earth) and takes his position around the Shire.
It says quite a bit about his character given that Strider does all of this work without taking any credit for it. In any case, it’s not like anyone has the ability (or the wisdom) to outguess Gandalf the Grey.
7 He Captured Gollum
After Gollum is allowed to leave the confines of Barad Dur, which is in itself an unbelievable fact, he is caught by Aragorn. This job is also given to him by Gandalf, who observes that the ring of invisibility in Bilbo’s possession might be Sauron’s One Ring, which means that the one who originally had it would need to be interrogated.
Strider successfully tracks and ensnares the slippery ex-Hobbit in the vicinity of Mordor’s Dead Marshes, and delivers him to the Mirkwood elves. Nevertheless, Gollum flees soon after, assisted by a few minions of Sauron.
6 His Ancestry Was Hidden From Himself
Elrond safeguards the heir of Elendil, keeping both Aragorn and his mother, Gilraen, protected within the Elven “stronghold” of Rivendell. Further, it is Gilraen who names him Estel, or “Hope”, in order to divert attention away from Sauron, who still lives in fear of what the scions of Isildur are capable of.
Aragorn’s heritage is divulged at the age of 20, when Elrond delivers the iconic fragments of Elendil’s sword, Narsil, as well as the ancient Ring of Barahir, into his possession. He takes to his new status with grace and poise, indicating that he was always meant to know.
5 He Fell In Love With Arwen Undomiel
The only daughter of Elrond, Arwen Undomiel, becomes the object of affection for the young ranger after he finds her loitering around the gardens of Rivendell (having spent a few decades living with Galadriel, her maternal grandmother.)
It is said that the pair experience a fierce love for each other from the very outset, but they only dedicate their lives when Aragorn was around fifty years old. Even so, Elrond “requests” that Arwen doesn’t wed him before he achieves his destiny — becoming the King of Men.
4 He Left Rivendell For The Dunedain
Upon his induction into the past, Aragorn accepts that he is to lead the Dunedain, becoming the 16th head of the ancient clan. After his, he abandons all of Rivendell’s luxuries for a life in the forest, braving the elements, evil creatures, and human villains (far worse than the other two) with an intense pride blossoming in his heart.
It is during this period that Strider learns the art of herbal medicine, using Athelas to help cure most varieties of injury. Interestingly, this is how he is first recognized for who he is, as “the hands of a King are the hands of a healer,” after all.
3 Aragorn, The Globe Trotter
Strider spends a large fraction of his “youth” cavorting around Middle-Earth, but being a Ranger, he manages to hide his tracks so well that even the author had no idea about everything he does during this period.
Apparently, he journeys deep into the sunless Moria mines, making it through to the other side without encountering the Balrog of Morgoth (the ancient creature that is responsible for Gandalf’s ultimate metamorphosis.) Of course, there is no way that Aragorn actually fought the fell beast, because he would have mentioned it to the Fellowship during their travels.
2 He Worked For Both Rohan And Gondor
For over two decades, Aragorn spends his time working for Rohan’s King Thengel (Theoden’s father) and Gondor’s Steward, Ecthelion the Second (Denethor’s dad). Although he isn’t known as Strider here, he takes on a different title, Thorongil, which means “Star Eagle.”
This is especially interesting when one considers that Aragorn is 87 years old during the War of the Ring, making Theoden, a man who looks much older than him, actually twenty years younger. It’s all that half-elven blood coursing through his veins.
1 The Royal House Of Telcontar
Interestingly, Aragorn gives tribute to his original name, Strider, by changing the official name of the House of Elendil to Telcontar, elegantly combining his own history with that of his ancestors. Telcontar refers to Strider in the Quenyan tongue, one of the most ancient versions of Elvish.
He dies at the age of 210, ruling for 120 years, and Arwen perishes around a year after (heartbreak, apparently) being 2901 years old at the time. They leave behind a son, Eldarion, who is crowned the next King, as well as a number of nameless daughters.
