From playing the tortured Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to playing abusive ’90s tabloid fixture Jeff Gillooly in I, Tonya, Sebastian Stan has become a major player in the film industry. Disappearing into his varied characters, it is a challenge to separate the actor from his characters.

In effect, Sebastian Stan remains a relatively low profile figure with not much known about his personal life or aspects of his life before fame. But Stan is not a closed book, as he has revealed many interesting things about himself and his past over the years.

10 Born in Romania

Born in the seaside city of Constanta in Romania, Sebastian Stan spent many of his formative years in Europe. Stan lived in his birthplace of Romania until he was eight and then lived in Vienna until he was twelve. After Vienna, he finally landed in the country that would become his adopted home: the United States. When Stan was 20, he officially became a United States citizen in 2002.

9 “Wake Up Call” Music Video

In the beginning of Stan’s career, he was the male lead in Hayden Panettierre’s 2008 “Wake Up Call” music video. Billed simply as “Boyfriend” Stan doesn’t have a big part in the video, mostly just shots of him looking around in a club. Hayden Panettierre and Sebastian Stan apparently have connections from before the music video, starring in the 2006 film The Architect together, as brother and sister in the film. The small role Sebastian Stan plays in this music video does not do his acting chops justice, as he would later show off his acting prowess in his fantastic performance in the critically acclaimed and the Rotten Tomatoes certified fresh film Destroyer.

8 First Film Credit In 1994

When Stan was only twelve and living in Vienna at the time, he made his feature film debut in European film director Michael Haneke’s film 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance.

Credited as Kid in Subway, a very young Stan is seen hopping around a subway platform opposite a boy his age. His next film credit would not occur for another 10 years until 2004’s Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding. A large gap between his first and second film credits, Stan was gaining his education in the interim.

Stagedoor Manor, the renowned Catskills theater camp, has had many famous faces pass through their camp through the years, including Natalie Portman and Robert Downey Jr, the eventual star of the highly regarded Iron Man. Sebastian Stan is another notable alumni to come out of Stagedoor Manor. A surprising connection, Sebastian Stan’s godmother is Anastasia Soare, who founded and owns the well-known makeup brand, Anastasia Beverly Hills. Soare and Stan are both from Constanta, Romania and both have fulfilled their passions and dreams, albeit in very different professions. A billion-dollar company, Anastasia Beverly Hills is a favorite of Hollywood stars, with the company being in high esteem for its eyebrow products.

5 Struggled To Pay His Rent After Captain America: The First Avenger Came Out

For most people, the assumption is that actors are constantly making money hand over fist, especially when they’ve had credits under their name. However, this was definitely not the case for Sebastian Stan. As Stan recounted in an interview with ET “… In 2011 after the first Captain America came out, about a month later I had a call from my business manager telling me I had a month left to figure out how I was going to pay my rent. So, perception is always interesting, isn’t it? Nobody ever knows what the f**k is really happening.” Stan’s fantastic portrayal of Bucky Barnes, deemed one of his best roles, helped to ensure his financial stability and future as there have been numerous movies and a spin-off series to profit from, guaranteeing that the rent struggle won’t be an issue for Stan ever again.

4 Prized Possession

Sebastian Stan’s prized possession is a candleholder that once belonged to screen icon James Dean. The candleholder was a gift to Sebastian from his time on the movie The Architect.

A fan of the Rebel Without a Cause star, the candleholder that once belonged to Dean is now held in high priority by Sebastian, being the item that Stan would grab if his house was on fire, deemed in a hypothetical situation question raised by interviewer Alexa Chung.

3 He’s A Sweetheart

A far cry from his more villainous characters, Stan actually has a reputation as being an extremely nice guy in real life. Between gifting his child costar a gigantic teddy bear and going out of his way to run into the audience to hug a nervous fan at a comic con panel, Stan appears to be a major sweetheart. In addition to kind-hearted gestures, Stan is also incredibly charitable, being involved in multiple children’s charities, one of which is No Kid Hungry.

2 Rick Springfield Fan

In the 2015 movie, Ricki and the Flash, Sebastian Stan starred opposite Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. Yet, the costar on set he was most starstruck over was “Jessie’s Girl” singer Rick Springfield. As Stan related in an interview with Buzzfeed “I was personally very much more concerned about Rick Springfield because I love him and “Jesse’s Girl.” So when they were rehearsing I was fixated on him, hoping that he would, like, break into song. Finally on the last day I think he did. So I was kinda taken aback by him.”. His Rick Springfield fandom is fitting for his lesser-known role in the eighties-set Hot Tub Time Machine.

1 The Way He Lost His European Accent

Since Sebastian Stan did not immigrate to the United States until he was twelve, there was a language barrier issue he had as well as having a thick accent when he started to attend school in America. Being uncomfortable with his accent and wanting to fit in, Stan took to watching popular American ’80s and ’90s films like Back to the Future, The Sandlot, the Ace Ventura movies, and Coneheads to help him have more of an American accent. It proved to have worked as many viewers of Sebastian Stan’s work are usually surprised upon learning that the I, Tonya star was actually born and raised abroad in his early years.
