An anthology is a collection of stories, interconnected or standalone. These can either be literary or visual omnibuses. With the advent of film, many storytellers have embraced the anthology format. The genres vary: comedy, drama, horror, romance, and sci-fi.
Some of the most well-known anthology-style movies are Sin City and Twilight Zone: The Movie. However, there are a number of underrated ones that are deserving of a first or second viewing. These ten anthologies can be streamed today, too.
10 Burning Palms (2010)
Screenwriter Christopher Landon is best known for Happy Death Day. His directorial debut was a 2010 anthology called Burning Palms. It’s a series of satirical stories dealing with taboo subject matters.
A woman becomes suspicious (and jealous) of her fiancé’s inappropriate relationship with his 15-year-old daughter; another woman goes mad after engaging in a sex act she didn’t want to do; a gay couple has second thoughts after adopting a child from Africa; a spoiled boy’s prank on the family maid ends fatally; and, a woman who was sexually violated, finds her assaulter and plays a bizarre game with him.

9 The Little Death (2014)
This Australian romantic anthology (also known as A Funny Kind of Love) explores sexuality through various stories that range from humorous to heartfelt.
One couple engages in an illicit sex fantasy; a man unknowingly cheats on his wife with his wife; a man and woman try to stay together after a failed experiment; a woman finds pleasure in her husband’s pain; and, finally, a call center operator has an amorous chat with a client.

8 Go (1999)
In the vein of Quentin Tarantino’s filmography, Go is a hyperlinked assortment of amusing anecdotes. The movie was moderately successful at the box office, and it has become a cult film since then.
It all begins with a grocery store cashier being approached by two actors looking for some illegal party favors. This leads to a failed drug purchase, a sting operation, a terrible road trip, and unexpected romance.

7 Wiener Dog (2016)
In Todd Solondz’s Wiener Dog, a dachshund is the linking element between a set of alienating stories. First, a family’s son proves he’s not ready yet for a pet after they adopt the dog.
Later, a veterinarian technician takes the same dog home when she encounters it at work. She journeys with a former classmate as he goes to relay some bad news to his brother. Then, somehow, the dog winds up in the care of a disillusioned filmmaker before ending up with a blind, wealthy woman whose niece comes to her for a handout.

6 11:14 (2003)
In this indie black comedy, misfortune comes for a select group of people. Strange things just so happen at 11:14 PM in a small town one night.
A drunk man thinks he’s run over someone with his car; a group of youthful pranksters get in trouble with the law; a father suspects his daughter has committed a crime; a gas station attendant aids a friend in robbing the store they work at together; and, lastly, the aforesaid daughter gets her comeuppance after pulling a scam on someone.

5 From a Whisper to a Scream (1987)
This Southern Gothic horror anthology (also known as The Offspring) features Vincent Price in a host role. He’s visited by a reporter played by Susan Tyrrell. The old man recounts four stories unique to the area of Oldfield.
A man experiences supernatural justice after he gets away with murder; a wounded criminal finds sanctuary with a man who is sitting on a miracle cure; a young and misguided woman falls in love with a glass eater at a local carnival; and a group of soldiers is taken captive by feral children during the American Civil War.

4 Amusement (2008)
Told like an anthology, this slasher movie is split up into four segments. There is an overarching story that involves a madman stalking three women he knew from his childhood.
Amusement begins with Shelby and her boyfriend on a road trip when they see suspicious cargo in the back of a truck. Then, Tabitha is unnerved by a life-sized clown in her room as she babysits at her aunt’s house. Finally, Lisa ventures into a creepy old house when her boyfriend goes missing.

3 The Company of Wolves (1984)
This fantasy-horror movie is loosely based on a short from Angela Carter’s book The Bloody Chamber. In the film, a young girl gets lost in her own daydreams. She’s told stories by her grandmother about wolves and vice versa.
The four stories interspersed throughout the main one include shorts about a man becoming a beast when he finds out his former love has remarried; a boy encounters the Devil; a wedding is besieged by an evil witch; and a she-wolf causes troubles in a village.

2 Jealousy (1984)
In this TV-made anthology, Angie Dickinson plays three different characters in three different stories. The theme is the titular emotion.
In “Gloria,” a mother is suspicious her new husband is having an affair with her daughter. Next in “Laura,” a woman marries a rich widower and becomes jealous of his pet parrot. In the final tale “Ginny,” a bad breakup leads to a surprising ending.

1 Disconnect (2012)
The negative effects of social media and the Internet influence the lives of a diversified group of people. One student is being bullied online, a woman seeks solace on a forum, and young man becomes a sex worker.
With all three stories here being hyperlinked, Disconnect shows there is no such thing as anonymity when it comes to the Internet.
