10 Unsung Star Wars Actors Who Deserve More Attention

For over 40 years, the Star Wars movies have given fans some of the best and most iconic performances in all of film history. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Ewan McGregor, Daisy Ridley, and Adam Driver have helped brilliantly bring the central characters to life. Still, they are far from the only performances in the franchise that warrant recognition.

Whether they be minor characters, animated, or physical performances under a mask or suit, many performers in Star Wars deserve more attention for their work to bring their characters to life and add to the saga’s stories.

10 Alden Ehrenreich – Han Solo

Not only do many fans feel that Solo is one of the most underrated Star Wars films to date, but also has performances that deserve more applause than what they have received. Perhaps the one that stands out most as needing love is that of Alden Ehrenreich.

Donald Glover was outstanding, and Emilia Clarke, Paul Bettany, Woody Harrelson, and Phoebe-Waller Bridge were solid. Ehrenreich, though, took an impossible task and handled it brilliantly. He took up the role of one of cinema’s most iconic characters from Harrison Ford, in a movie that not many asked for and smashed it, doing so with the typical flair of Han, portraying a younger, more hopeful version of the character, albeit one with the same charm.

9 Stephen Stanton – Obi-Wan Kenobi, AP-5, Wilhuff Tarkin & More

There is something about Obi-Wan Kenobi that makes him a force of consistent excellence, not only in the character but in the performances behind him, such as Ewan McGregor, Alec Guinness, James Arnold Taylor, and Stephen Stanton.

Stanton is immense in his one appearance as Obi-Wan in the Rebels episode, “Twin Suns.” Filled with great Obi-Wan quotes and a face-off with Maul, Stanton beautifully blends the Obi-Wan of the prequel era with the Alec Guinness version of the character. That was not Stanton’s debut in Star Wars, though, as he consistently voices Tarkin brilliantly throughout Star Wars animation. He also funnily voiced AP-5 in Rebels, Griff Halloran and Namua in Resistance, Mas Amedda and Moralo Eval in The Clone Wars, Admiral Raddus in Rogue One, and other small roles.

8 Ahmed Best – Jar Jar Binks & Kelleran Beq

10 Unsung Star Wars Actors Who Deserve More Attention

One of the unfortunate realities about the Star Wars fandom is that some of the performers and behind-the-scenes people working on the franchise are often hit with toxicity and hate. Ahmed Best is one such performer, and he deserves a lot more love than he has got.

Many fans, particularly prequel-lovers, have come to appreciate Best for his physical and vocal contributions. Thankfully Lucasfilm continued to use him since the prequel era. Not only has Ahmed had smaller roles, such as a cameo as Ack Med-Beq in Attack Of The Clones and the voice of Boss Lyonie in The Clone Wars, but he also played Jedi Kelleren Beq in Jedi Temple Challenge, doing so with great energy.

7 Veronica Ngô – Paige Tico

The opening scene of The Last Jedi is exhilarating and a fantastic watch, particularly the first time around. It is like its own isolated short movie. Paige Tico, played by Veronica Ngô, is a huge part of this.

The Last Jedi has a handful of amazing performances from more prominent actors, and so it is easy to forget how great Ngô is as Paige in those opening minutes, as the fearless rebel fights to the death. Alongside Poe, Paige sucks fans into the mini-story of the movie’s opening. The moment where she scrambles to catch the bombing controls and gives her life to destroy the Dreadnought is a standout scene that is also crucial for Poe’s leadership arc, and Ngô plays it terrifically.

6 Tom Kane – Yoda, Wulf Yularen, & Various

10 Unsung Star Wars Actors Who Deserve More Attention

Tom Kane has been lending his voice to the Star Wars franchise for 25 years, debuting in Shadows Of The Empire as Leebo, and going on to voice a ton of characters over the years.

Most notably, Kane’s work includes Wulf Yularn/the narrator of The Clone Wars, giving the beloved intros to the show’s episodes. He also voices Yoda, doing a great job standing in for Frank Oz in animation, impressing in scenes like Yoda vs. Dark Yoda. Kane’s voice can be heard in various small roles in video games (such as Knights Of The Old Republic), every animated Star Wars show, and even live-action films. But Kane is scarcely mentioned despite all this work and is not a name well known by more mainstream Star Wars fans like he deserves to be.

5 David Prowse – Darth Vader

The voice work of James Earl Jones is superb, and undoubtedly what people think of first in terms of the performance of Darth Vader’s character, but the late David Prowse deserves far more attention for what he did during the trilogy.

Not only did he have to act out and say the lines that would turn into the great Vader quotes from James Earl Jones, but Prowse had to be the physical presence of Vader, and he was fantastic in doing so. He was the perfect physical presence for portraying Vader in menacing scenes and lightsaber fights and clearly put in a lot of work on set.

4 Peter Mayhew & Joonas Suotamo – Chewbacca

10 Unsung Star Wars Actors Who Deserve More Attention

Chewbacca is often in the backdrop of the central three characters of the original trilogy, but that does not stop him from being adored by fans. Across different eras of Star Wars, both Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo have donned the “walking carpet” outfit.

The pair of tall actors physically portrayed Chewbacca and brought the beloved character to life. Since he has no lines, he merely growls, thanks to Ben Burtt, so it is easy to forget an actor is performing the movements and body language of the adored Wookiee. Mayhew did so in such a loveable nature in the originals, while Suatomo continued the legacy into this new era.

3 Matthew Wood – General Grievous, Battle Droids & More

10 Unsung Star Wars Actors Who Deserve More Attention

Matthew Wood is an immensely talented sound editor and a hugely skilled voice actor who can be heard littered throughout Star Wars in various roles.

Wood is, most notably, General Grievous in the prequel trilogy, voicing Grievous again in The Clone Wars, alongside the battle droids, and other odd characters between the projects. In Rebels, The Bad Batch, The Mandalorian, Return Of The Jedi (special edition), The Force Awakens, and other projects, he plays various small voice roles. Wood is hugely talented, and his hilarious work with the battle droids, particularly in their interactions with Wood’s Grievous, is often overlooked.

2 Pernilla August – Shmi Skywalker

The prequel trilogy is often criticized for its poor acting and the direction behind those performances. However, as Ewan McGregor proves, there is some terrific talent in there, and Pernilla August as Shmi Skywalker delivers a performance that is rarely lauded.

In The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, as Anakin’s mother, August is warm and caring and plays a character with a tragic life who has to say goodbye to her son before dying. August deserves more praise for her role in the trilogy and what she brings to the first two movies.

1 Dee Bradley Baker – The Clone Troopers & More

Voice actors in Star Wars are the undervalued heroes of the franchise, often overlooked due to being “just voices” and usually being in animation. But voice actors like Sam Witwer, Ashley Eckstein, Matt Lanter, Vanessa Marshall, and more have delivered some of Star Wars’ best performances.

Perhaps the actor who likely will never get the credit they deserve from a lot of fans is Dee Bradley Baker, most known for voicing all the adult clones – alongside various minor roles. Baker helps bring the idea of clone individuality to life and gives fans so many emotional moments with Rex and Fives, while brilliantly tweaking his voice when required for unique clones like Gregor, 99, and Clone Force 99. All Star Wars voice actors deserve more credit, but Baker does special work to get fans invested in multiple clones in one scene.
