There’s no denying that Ben Affleck is one of the biggest stars in all of Hollywood. Since bursting onto the scene in the 1990s with Good Will Hunting, Affleck has been on the cover of magazines as frequently as he’s been on movie posters.
Recently, Affleck has admirably come out on the other side of tumult and he has a ton of projects in the works, all of which seem pretty exciting. Between projects in the DCEU, a reunion with Matt Damon, and even some work on television, the future is bright for Ben Affleck.
10 Falling To Earth
A 2013 novel by Kate Southwood, Falling to Earth is a dramatic story of a small town afflicted with the disaster of a tornado. Receiving immense acclaim, the story was optioned by Hillary Seitz with a plan for Ben Affleck to star.
It’s not just a Twister type navigation of a tornado disaster, though. It’s also about how a community rebuilds in the wake of this disaster. Considering Affleck’s ability to play both sides of a tornado film like that, it sounds quite promising.
9 McDonald’s Monopoly
The McDonald’s Monopoly sweepstakes has been a massive promotional event for the world’s most prominent fast-food chain and board game combination. However, like any bizarre news event in recent memory, it was embroiled in scandal.
To tell the story of this scam, the story rights were optioned by Affleck and Damon in a collaborative pairing once again. Affleck recently stated that, even though the studios involved in the film have been in flux, he’s still developing the project.
8 The Big Goodbye
Talented as Affleck may be as an actor, he’s undoubtedly a stellar director, too! With films like The Town and Argo under his belt, Affleck’s next directorial project is just as compelling as his future acting endeavors.
The next time Affleck will sit in the director’s chair is proposed to be a Paramount adaptation of the Sam Wasson story, The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood. A behind the scenes depiction of the making of Chinatown will obviously be a big deal, but the major question will definitely revolve around how the film handles Roman Polanski.
7 King Leopold’s Ghost
Another story that will need to handle its subject matter deftly is the forthcoming King Leopold’s Ghost, another story to which Affleck is attached in a directorial capacity. Affleck and Martin Scorsese are both slated to be involved in producing roles, too.
This movie will center around King Leopold’s 1800s invasion and devastation of the Congo. Also based on a book, it will be another film that revolves around Affleck manning the director’s chair to bring a true story to life.
6 City On A Hill – Season 2
Moving to the realm of television, Affleck is also involved as an executive producer on the Showtime Boston crime drama, City on a Hill. Last year, the series was renewed for a second season that will see Affleck, Damon, and others (like James Mangold, Barry Levinson, and Jennifer Todd) retain executive producer credit.
City on a Hill obviously has the Boston connection with Matt and Ben, but it also stars Kevin Bacon. He’s the lead, Jackie Rohr, a corrupted Charlestown FBI agent.
5 Hypnotic
A new action movie from Affleck seeks to unite the star with director Robert Rodriguez on a thrill ride that was supposed to begin production back in April. However, like every other production in Hollywood, the film was delayed.
Now, though, the film, Hypnotic, has become the poster child for film studio insurance during the COVID-19 era. A lawsuit has dominated the narrative of Hypnotic, with the question of pandemic-related insurance at the heart of it.
4 Snyder Cut
This is one Ben Affleck project everyone knows about, whether they’re a movie fan or not, an Affleck fan or not. It’s Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League, the 2017 superhero bomb that became Joss Whedon’s baby.
Did the Snyder Cut ever actually exist? Not really. But fan pressure resulted in Snyder taking his talents to the DC edit room to cut together a new version of the crossover event for Warner Brothers’ HBO Max streaming service. Affleck is expected to still have a big role in this version.
3 The Flash
Believe it or not, a re-edit of scenes already filmed is not the only DC project in which Affleck is involved. Despite saying that the character of Batman was behind him, Affleck re-upped for a new appearance as the superhero in the forthcoming solo film, The Flash.
This will be an interesting experiment for the universe, as Affleck’s Batman will allegedly appear alongside Michael Keaton’s Batman from the classic Tim Burton take on the Dark Knight. If it is his last turn in the cape, he’ll surely make it a memorable one.
2 Deep Water
Adrian Lyne is the director behind such classic sexual thrillers as Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal. He’s returning with a film in the same vein of psychological attraction, Deep Water, which will be released this November.
The film centers around a married couple (played by real-life pairing, Affleck and Ana de Armas), who begin to manipulate one another after they fall out of love. For anyone who loves actors performing in a meta context, Deep Water is the one to watch.
1 The Last Duel
Lastly, Affleck’s most anticipated new film in quite some time is The Last Duel, which comes from a screenplay he and Damon wrote with Nicole Holofcener. This would be exciting enough, but it also stars Adam Driver and Jodie Comer and will be directed by Ridley Scott.
Affleck will play King Charles VI in the film, which takes place in 14th-century France and centers around a pivotal duel between Damon’s and Driver’s characters. It’s expected to be a major release in October 2021 and it remains Affleck’s most anticipated project.
